A littler more …Yahweh becomes the tribal god of Jews, with the Jews “chosen to worship” Yahweh. Note the First Commandment. “I am the LORD your God: you shall not have strange Gods before me.” Notice the plural and recognition of other gods. Relatedly, to labour the point a little, early traditions have Asherah, as the wife of Yahweh. Again, suggesting the polytheistic nature of the times. For many, there appears a mistaken concept of God’s relationship to the Jewish people, wherein, the underlying constructs were nationalism and inclusivity, being deductions contrary to Jesus, the God of the NT and Pauline Christianity. It follows, theology can benefit from a sprinkle of anthropology and history…. Even Deism: “ The supreme God is a Being eternal, infinite, absolutely perfect; but a being, however perfect, without dominion, cannot be said to be Lord God; for we say, my God, your God, the God of Israel, the God of Gods, and Lord of Lords; but we do not say, my Eternal, your Eternal, the Eternal of Israel, the Eternal of Gods; we do not say, my Infinite, or my Perfect: These are titles which have no respect to servants. The word God usually signifies Lord; but every lord is not a God. It is the dominion of a spiritual being which constitutes a God; a true, supreme, or imaginary dominion makes a true, supreme, or imaginary God.” Newton, The Principia, 1687. Think what Newton is saying humans might temporalise and contextual God in our, God’s servants’ terms; yet we can’t, because the Divine is another realm.
