This was a huge hit at the time and super-catchy: once it's stuck in your head it's there for decades. There have been a couple of heavy rock versions of this, but by far the best is by Scottish band Gun: you should check it out 'cos it's very good and really different to this one. Fun fact: the detective in the video you just watched was played by LeVar Burton who subsequently got the gig playing Jordi LaForge (the blind engineer) in Star Trek The Next Generation. The voice effect on the original isn't literally Autotune (it wasn't out then) but it's definitely an electronic effect added either downstream from the mic (could be just a guitar effects pedal in the line) or in post-production.
@BlackHatCinephile

After four to six characters got their full say, they might let Jordi say something. LaVar Burton was Kunte Kinte/Not-Toby, the pivotal character in Roots.

What's hilarious about this reaction is that Brad carefully avoids commenting on the obvious elephant in the room: The red codpiece. It's okay, Brad. *Everybody* in the 80's asked themselves the same question: "What's the deal with the red codpiece?" The red codpiece is one of those weirdly iconic things that everybody senses deserves some kind of acknowledgment, but nobody has any idea as to what they can possibly say about it.

For sure your mom loved this group and their songs. lol! Old school funk music. Cameo had a long career 'late '70s, '80s and early '90s. Similar to Prince. And no, no autotune here. Check out their videos "Candy" , "Rigor Mortis", "Back and Forth", "I Want it Now". they always had cool hairstyles and dance moves. Yall migh know some of their songs, lot of it was sampled by hip hop artists. Yes! Black Eyed Peas are influenced by this group and others. Very funky and fun.

For the ultimate vocal effect from back in those days and even the 70s, check out the talk box. It mostly got used in conjunction with a guitar and used a plastic tube that a singer would put in his mouth and talk while playing the guitar to make the guitar notes sound like they were words. To take it further, Roger Troutman (Zapp) used it with a synthesizer instead of a guitar on "More Bounce to the Ounce" by Zapp and "Heard it Through the Grapevine" covered by Roger Troutman from Zapp. Just ask Lex's mom!

Cameo came to prominence in 1976 as a hard core funk band. Over the years there were 8-9-10-11 band members. In the 80’s they downsized and changed their sound with the times. As hitmakers they outlasted nearly all their peers. The lead singer on the track, Larry began as the drummer. Over the years he sang lead more and became more of a front man. That was his singing voice going back to about 1978. Tomi Jenkins was the primary lead singer throughout their career. The late Wayne Cooper was also a lead singer famous for the falsetto on Why Have I Lost You.

Never associated this song with Mongoloid, maybe the key is the same. Devo is definitely another of my favorite bands I like a sense of humor and fun and Cameo and Devo both got that. Delicious 80's goodness.

Back in my day there wasn’t black or white, there was just talent. Review Tracy Chapman….incredible talent and soul. My favorite artist in high school, she spoke to the way I grew up….Human I hate we’ve reverted 60 years in the last 20. Heart. Breaking..af

I am the white version of Brad. He is no doubt a fellow intellectual INTJ. His analysis and look of shock and confusion is quite charming. The only difference is that I actually like this song.

That's a thing called TALENT...as in the ability to sing...something that many singers (of all times, but just today) don't have

Ok, now you HAVE to do The Time “Jungle Love”, Dazz Band “Let it Whip”, and Rick James “Give it to me Baby”.

For The Time “Jungle Love”, you must do the video so you can see the whole band dance in unison and see the singer Morris Day look at himself in the mirror……

My group around me in the late 80's would say something like "wanna go see a movie?" and it would be like "Word Up" let's go!

One of my favorite tunes of ALL TIME! Simple straight forward kick-drum heavy beat, wicked FONK bass riff. Shit ain't complicated but it's catchyer'n'a Mu (shut.my.Mouth). Little synth 80's groove.
