Maus was a autocoureur. He got a speeding fine but he thought that his speed was correct but the agent fined him anyway. So he invented the speed camera to prove he was right.

They missed THE BEST Dutch invention by Boyan Slat: The Ocean Cleanup, who since 2013 and a team of 80 is cleaning up the Pacific garbage patch and (3) rivers with the (invented) Inceptors in Indonesia, Malaysia and Dominican Republic from (plastic) and other polluting waste! It was in the V&D where wifi was born, not the Macdonalds. V&D (Warehouse) always moved it's interior around and had to move all the cables too. They look for a solution and came up with WIFI) Jobs actually rejected it.

It's my uncle who invented the technique to injection mold clear plastic without getting the white stretchmarks (which you also get if you bend or damage the plastic). He still owns the patents to that technique today. 😎 Injection molded clear plastics are used in A LOT of products today. Just look in your kitchen how many items are made of clear plastic. 😉

Uiteindelijk heeft hij Mepal van de Amerikanen overgekocht die het bedrijf, zoals een Amerikaan doet, helemaal had uitgemolken waarbij een deel van de Mepal werknemers ook door was gegaan met eigen bedrijf Copia. Hij heeft gewoon alle functies binnen de fabriek zelf gedaan, om te kijken waar het beter kon en te horen van de werknemers waar de knelpunten voor hen lagen. En heeft zo stukje bij beetje het hele bedrijf weer op poten gekregen vanaf faillisement eind jaren 80 tot het opnieuw fuseren met de oud werknemers van Copia, en het groot maken van het bedrijf. Waarna hij uiteindelijk nog meer bedrijven heeft gehad. Onder ander ook om grote hogedruk tanks te maken en dat soort zaken. Hij was een van de betere bazen, maar is reeds met pensioen.

@ 4:45 --- Normaly you would connect your cassettedeck with your amplifier and record what you @ 8:55 --- put on the turntable. @ 11:55 --- the glass is filled right to the brim; you take a first sip without hands, to lower the level in the glass, so you can pick up the glass and drink the rest without making a mess. Maus Gatsomides indeed was a racing driver, and a sneeky one at that. One sub-category of car-racing was the speed-slalom. The intent was to drive a stretch of racing track slaloming around pylons; each pylon hit incurred a penalty of five seconds on the end time. Maus decided to floor the pedal and go straight over each and every pylon incurring a penalty of 100 seconds ..... he however was so much faster than other drivers he still won the event. He invented the speed camera after becoming frustrated by the inaccuracies of manual timing using stopwatches, so he invented this as a device to accurately record the times and speeds of competitors. I don't know whether Maus himself offered his device to the government, which I doubt seeing he loved driving at high speed, but I can imagine a race-loving civil servant seeing this device and seeing an other, more vile application, and persuading the higher ups to contact Maus to develop a policing variant. I can't blame him for agreeing to develop such if there would be a demand of hundreds - if not thousands - from the Dutch government alone.

The Gatsometer was originally a method for measuring the speed of auto's during autoraces. Gatsonides was a succesfull rally racer and won the Rally of Monte Carlo in 1953. (A little cheating on the way: bystanders along the road were throwing water at the wheels of the car for cooling the brakes :))

Hahaha yep, the tape recorder was indeed ready to go! Cassette tape in it, had to press play + record at the same time (don't know why both buttons though) and also pause because it only had to record the good song from the radio and releasing pause was quicker than pressing play + record at the same time. But I didn't wait for hours for a song to air though. Would get the Top 40 chart on paper at the music store just to know when 'my' song would air (approximately) ;-)

The record button was locked to avoid accidentally pressing record. By pressing play at the same time it unlocked the record button. Back then there was no safety lock on the cassette yet. Another reason was that the record head worked in conjunction with the playback heads. The playback heads actually recorded the audio coming in from the recording head which only transfered the sound of the microphone or radio to the other heads.

Ayye i saw my hometown, well kinda. The bottle of gin called "anker" is our local distillery which is also a beerbrewer. Our little town of Weesp (really close to amsterdam) was famous for its jenever way back in the day and now we recently had a distillery opening back up in our old church, really cool to see and our beer and gin are still top tier stuff if you ask me
