"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

The dem establishment wont allow a more progressive person in because they are more interested in doing their job, which is protecting the ruling class's interests. Its why billionaires mostly support dems, because they see them as more dependable and predictable, and thinking about trying to stabilize things through modest yet inconsequential policies for the poors to keep them from rioting. The dems are doing exactly what they are supposed to do, pursue and defend ruling elites interests. The best part is, it doesn't matter if they lose because ultimately the GOP will do the same thing, even if they are more reactionary and unstable. If the dems cared about "defending democracy from Trump", they wouldn't have pretended that Joe Biden is "fine" this whole time, lying to the entire nation while disallowing a primary.

Thank you. No comment on the general election, but in the 2020 Texas Dem primary, in Dallas you could get a phone app that gave real-time vote tallies, and you could SEE votes disappearing from Bernie's tally and instantaneously being added to Joe's. The Supreme Court said the DNC, as a private corporation, doesn't HAVE to let voters choose candidates, and their billionaire donors chose Biden. We need to get rid of the DNC.

Democrats are saying privately that Biden should go but they won't put pressure on him. He is in a bubble and he will not leave without pressure. They need to do an intervention and tell him in no uncertain terms that it is time to retire for the good of the country. Someone needs to take grandpa's car keys. Grandpa won't just do it himself. Biden does not realize the severity of the situation. They need to tell him, not just wait to see if he figures it out himself.

Trump acted crazy? I was shocked he actually act restrained. Even compassionate when responding to President Biden, “ I don’t know what he said, and I don’t think he knows either”. He actually looks sorry for his opponent, President Biden. As we all were if you have an ounce of compassion. I would’ve even felt sorry for Trump if he exhibited signs of Dementia. that’s a painful process for the family. And a much more painful process for a citizen, whose president is exhibiting signs of dementia and worse policies that show no mental awareness. What president would attack his own oil and energy production? Cancel valid oil leases on federal lands. I do appreciate the present Biden tucked into the strategic petroleum reserves and dumped millions of barrels of oil on the midterms. Did he do anything about those check orders? You know one thing for sure, like President Biden’s first an office President Trump will be signing a lot of executive orders. Undo every single executive order President Biden signed his first, causing the economic catastrophe. Most Americans are living today. If you were just making it the day present was elected, you weren’t making it two weeks later with the raging inflation followed. Inflation was already going to occur since all the people were going back to work from the mandated shutdown. Biden threw gasoline on the fire. I’m very sorry to. I’m much better off under Democrat, influenced healthcare. As I’ve said before I paid more for my healthcare I couldn’t afford to use from 1995 to 2005, then my house cost in San Diego in 1985. Healthcare with a deductible which made that healthcare unaffordable to use. I actually would go to private doctors outside Kaiser Permanente for the couple needs I encountered. My healthcare resembled more like bankruptcy insurance in case I ever had a serious illness. Now I have OHP or healthcare, which is free, no deductible, but huge restrictions on any income. Which is made it actually better not to go back to work as I intended to do, rather live on my Social Security. $200 pay for both homeowners insurance, and property tax on my beach house looking out over the Pacific Ocean.

Quit using the term gaslighting,
@zacg_
@zacg_ 24 күн бұрын
He does overuse it but I think this use is appropriate. The term means that one person is trying to convince another that they can't trust their own senses or memory because they are insane. Kyle usually just uses it as a synonym for "lying" but this time it makes sense. Telling the general public that Biden has his wits about him and that they can't draw any inference about his mental state based on how he behaves publicly is effectively telling us we can't believe our lying eyes. You don't need to be a doctor or a psychologist in order to put together that Biden's cognition isn't working right. You need to be a healthcare provider to make a specific diagnosis. But most people can get a general sense of what's going and they're telling us that we can't do what human beings do on a daily basis as part of basic social interaction.
