In norse mythology, on the way to Utgard, Thor was challenged by a Jötun (giant) to feats of strength, including chugging down the contents of a big drinking horn. Thor took the first big, big chug until he had to stop. However, the level in the drinking horn only went down a bit. He tried a second and a third big chug, each slightly smaller than the one before, but he could not empty the drinking horn and Thor failed the challenge. Later in the story it was revealed that the Jötun used trickery and illusions, because no one could ever compete with Thor's notorious strength in a fair competition. The drinking horn was actually connected to the ocean. It is explained that Thor drank so much of the ocean's water, that this is how low tide came to be.

Funny thing is, Thor is also known to chug.
