It's kinda sad how Oats had to be forced to go in the correct direction by the hack maker placing lots of oats-proof areas in the game. Like, if the hack maker had been less prepared, Oats would have gone all the way through without so many essential items, because he refuses to take anything that's directly infront of him. I think to not just make a fantastic looking hack, but to make sure that any kind of player can be helped along, shows true skill and competence. This deserved to be a 5 star hack. I love the speed-run strat of dying so you respawn exactly where you just were but now without spazer.

Yeah, something that alot of metroid hack players do is attempt to sequence break, because non linearity is usually seen as a must have in metroidvanias. Sure, it is nice to have, but there still needs to be a path forward. A little bit of linearity I believe is nice to have in the genre.

It's borderline impossible to find series/videos of people playing SM romhacks that aren't either sweaty ADHD-brained streamers trying to split the hack open at every opportunity or completely silent walkthrough playthroughs. I just want to watch someone play the game in a natural way and talk about it while they're doing it.

This might be a hot take but this hack, while it may be amazing in its atmosphere and presentation, lacks in its ability to guide the player. Guiding the player is not a bad thing, and it's the reason Super is such a timeless classic in the first place. I ain't nowhere near as good as Oats, but I'm pretty damn good at Metroid, and I got stuck maybe 20-30 minutes in the game with no clear path ahead or what to do. Having to shoot or bomb "every" block in every room you've already explored, contrary to popular belief, is not what Metroid is supposed to be about. This hack falls victim to the common problem of not understanding how to guide the player in the subtle ways that Super does, which is a shame, really, knowing that so much went into this project. It's this ongoing thought of "Metroid's about getting lost" that's taken to the nth degree that continues to alienate players from the franchise. Metroid's not about getting lost, it's about *feeling* lost, but to each their own.

That really doesn't make any sense. It would be mockrun then, as mock is applied to what the thing is mocking, not vice versa. For example, a mock viper is not a viper. A mockball would not be a ball. Machball makes far more sense, as it's a FAST morphball.

@@doctorquack1399 Okay so... that reminds me. Potential spoilers for this game really far down. So, when I booted up the game for the first time, there was an existing file already created, with a save in an area called "Elseq", with every item, a ton of missiles, 50 supers and 50 power bombs. In Elseq, it was revealed that Samus is just one of many clones, and she meets all the different clones, including a monster made of a bunch of them. Then, she takes a train out of Elseq and heads to a shipyard full of a bunch of copies of her ship, and she gets in one and flies away. Then, Samus is revealed to be having an existential crisis, along with the fact that the Chozo are still alive and apparently held a funeral for Samus. And then the game ended with 0% completion? Was that supposed to be the end of the game? -Did I have my whole experience ruined for me- jk im fine

Spoilers down below for what was supposed to happen: So first I must confess that I didn't actually play through the game myself, I don't have the free time to really get down and enjoy the hack, so I just went ahead and took the shortcut, skipping around a speedrun playthrough. Anyway, you're supposed to kill Ridley, proceed into Tourian (Elseq I guess), play around in there, hit a dead end, and die/restart the game and load a save. Upon respawning/loading the save, Samus will suddenly emerge from a save station in the cloning chamber that you must have found yourself in upon booting the game for the first time. It's meant to show that the body of Samus that you were initially controlling dies, and her consciousness is restored in another clone back in the cloning laboratory. Then horror ensues. She discovers numerous failed clones, dead, misshapen bodies in tubes, dismembered and experimented on. That monster you encountered (In place of Crocomire) is another failed amalgamated monstrosity of Samus. "KILL ME" Discovering all the rest of her successful clones, Samus freaks out and kills every single one. You can imagine just how traumatic such an experience is. The company on the planet even duped her ship. One thing I still don't quite understand is the bit of the Chozo holding a funeral for Samus and Samus attending. What does that mean?

I'm playing this too and it's really rough trying to figure out where I'm supposed to go next, and then I tune in and watch you and caauyjdp do it, and you use all your pro movement tricks that I can't do, and I can't tell if we're supposed to be using those tricks to progress or if you're unintentionally sequence-breaking because you're so good at the movement tricks. I literally in the space of a minute in the middle of doing a bomb-jump forgot how to bomb-jump and now I can't do it anymore.

on the coding stuff around an 1:14:00, honestly just pick one and stick with it long enough to make some stuff in it (doesn't have to be something huge). Once you've really learned one language any remotely similar language becomes much easier. Don't worry too much about picking the right one, after a while you'll be able to noodle around in languages you don't know just by looking up some of the syntax, so switching to a different language later is so much less difficult than starting in any of them.

He’s talking about how he’s never played the game before, and yet he’s doing all these moves it looks like he’s sequence breaking in a game he’s never played before. So it was feeling like you need those skills in order to actually play it.

@@Nazo-kage the point of sequence breaking is to well, do things out of order. If you played the game, you would still complete the game, just in the right order of events. You don't NEED speedrun strats to complete the game, you'd just have a slower time than Oats most likely, which doesn't really matter. You'd be playing the hack how its intended to be played, so I don't know why this makes you think that you have to use sequence breaks, since you don't have to sequence break anything at all... I mean I guess you have to know how to do wall jumps, but wall jumps are not too bad with some practice. I have no clue how to do speedrun strats but I can do wall jumps (not consistently lol), and I feel like that's the only strat you need to do, but wall jumps aren't complicated. I think overall you'd just complete the hack much slower, but it would still be perfectly possible to complete without being an amazing speedrunner

I tried playing this hack, and I ended up running into motherf-in Ridley with only 4 E-tanks, Varia suit, and Ice+Wave beam with some missiles and super missiles. Little did I know that he was supposed to be an endgame boss, but the way back is blocked by lava with a SAVE ROOM in the same room. So I basically soft locked myself after saving. I had to abuse save states like no tomorrow to get past Ridley. And then later when I have the Gravity Suit and Plasma beam and everything, I'm STILL missing Spazer Beam, lol. This hack has good atmosphere but progression wise it's shit. Hyper Metroid is much better.

I’d play this but I don’t like that you don’t get a few etanks early on. Running around so long on one etank or zero… yes I know he was trying to sequence break a game he’s not played, but I’m still shocked he didn’t find more etanks in the early game. Is the game expecting you to use save states?

The layers need to be contrasting colors. Everything looks the same and there's no "aha" moment when you get a new item because there's no memorable rooms. They're all blue with dark blue background, replace blue with another color. It's all "Okay, I got super missiles, so which blue room was it I saw I needed those?" Then the map overlays itself so there's no easy way to see where to go. i get the feeling the creator didn't know how to make a "spooky" atmosphere with brighter colors and loved the angled map squares a little too much.
