I’ve a 2018 Boxer GSA and live it. It’s really important to listen out for unusual noises and I had a problem with line which was entirely from hearing a very slight rattle. After 2 top end swaps under warranty, it was eventually found to be a roller bearing in the case causing the rods to be slightly out of alignment and scouring the barrel; 👍👍 to BMW for believing me though and my 2nd opinion from Chandlers BMW👌

Hey cool videos I bought the same bike a few weeks back 2018 k1600 b 12k on the clock, it makes some wierd noises as well and rattles in when moving slow and grab the clutch. feels like universal joints to me. i dont know much about the bike. Any thoughts?

watched your daily vlog as always this afternoon, around 7,30 pm decided to go for a ride, roads empty and sun still up, pulled in at betws y coed, 3 bikes parked up, all bmw, gs, rt and k 1600, great bikes but out of my price range, great viewing today as always

My 2019 Grand America does the same thing.. Try this: Put it in Neutral, turn off the engine and roll down a hill. Mine sounds horrible. Dealer says its just a BMW clunky trans. Did you have any luck figuring it out? Would love and answer...

Hmm, I wonder if it's worth sending that clip to BMW for further investigation of the sound? It may not be a problem now, but if it's not a normal sound then eventually it's going to be a problem with something, right? I parked my bike on blacktop yesterday without thinking. I came back six hours later (high 90's temps) and the kickstand had sunk an inch or two into the blacktop! I'll be sure to use my pad next time! Peace and love.

If others are having a tuff time hearing that rattle just make a copy of this video that has the part where its doing it and give it to them. You can hear it plan as day. It is unfortunate that BMW doesn't make a touring addition with a boxer motor in it.

Yo Shawn! Speaking of the CBX have you seen the KZbin videos the guy in Asia put out with a perfect rebuild and custom CBX? There's one from Europe too. One of them had a one of a kind 6 into 1 carbon baffled header. Sounded unlike anything on 2 wheels. Amazing!

I have the same bike, same year.....and that whistling in the low rpm's(500-3000) drives me mad!!!!! Any idea what causes it???? Up in higher gears and higher rpm's it disappears. Appreciate any insight.

It's just a characteristic of this engine design... The whistle never goes away or gets quieter. The old Honda CBX six from the late 70's early 80's sounded exactly like this. Thanks Fred!! 👍

Morning y'all, yeah that's a curious sound on that 1600. But gee, if it doesn't affect performance run with it I guess huh? I don't know if I'd have thought anything was amiss if I'd heard it and you hadn't pointed it out Shawn. I might have thought that's just how the 1600 sounds. Sounds like either the radiator or something loose in air intake. The frequency of the sound points to the radiator.

Nope... There was a bulletin or TST for the VIN range of effected units that may have that issue. Harley may send you a bulletin, or if it's a TST, contact your dealer for a new cap. Thanks!!

Try seeking the sound at a bit lower RPM. I have a noise in my Indian 111 like a noisy lifter at certain RPM. Indian said to run it and not to worry.

The K1600 in-line 6 will never make the lifter tap of an Indian or Harley, due to their chain driven dual cam shim adjusted valve setup... I've definitely heard the louder 111 lifter sound at given rpm's, but as they all do it, you realize it's a characteristic of those motors and all is good... " Ride 'er Like Ya Stole 'er..!" In my eyes Mr. Smaoks is one honest mechanic... Throughout my subscription I ve learnt a lot of stuff for at least the Beemers... Now on the other hand and this is the meat and potatoes of the comment, it costs me too darn much... For example I wanted a beemer came across his KZbin channel costed me 25 big ones beemer wise...Now I'm literally going to Tuscon Indian to buy a Springfield Dark horse.....Dang it there goes my VA pension....But you only live once..!!😉😉😉 Worst video ever is the one you never made, so anything else is top notch as expected....

Absolutely hear that rattling/knocking. Man I so much want to love these K series bikes. This channel has reported several recall repairs and lengthy waiting on parts for those recalls on these bikes. I get the love for the Boxer, but are the BMW K series bikes that finicky that they are besieged with recalls? Considering the sparse dealership network across the country compared with other large Touring bike companies, can we safely say with any bit of confidence that these K series bikes are reliable? Mind boggling a premium German engineering company like BMW building high performance formula race cars and M series consumer level equipped cars can’t get a “tight and right” 6 cylinder in-line motorcycle engine like the near bullet proof Honda.

There has only been one recall on K1600's in quite a few years, if ever..! I have no knowledge of any other recalls in the past few years. This trans recall did take a bit to sort all the logistics and re-manufacture the needed parts... The only other issues were failed ignition coils and customer induced failures. And though I'm not a huge fan of the K bikes, they are extremely reliable and loved by their owners. With the sheer volume of K1600's that come through our store, you're going to run across oddities, such as this... It will get diagnose & repaired, move on to a happy new owner in due time and all will be right with the world. Thanks!!

Thank you Smoaks! Appreciate the feedback. Here’s what those most current recalls amounted to. BMW says certain transmission parts may not have been produced to the appropriate hardness level. This could affect the function of the transmission, possibly causing double engagement of two gears and the damage of transmission parts. The following models are affected: 2017-2020 K 1600 GT 2018-2020 K 1600 GTL 2018-2020 K 1600 B BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the shift forks, the selector sleeve of 5th/6th gear, and the gear wheel of 6th gear, free of charge. The recall began Oct. 17, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. BMW K 1600 GTL & K 1600 B Recall BMW of North America is recalling 4,672 of its 2017-2020 K 1600 GT sport-touring motorcycles, and 2018-2020 K 1600 GTL and K 1600 B models due to possible transmission issues. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the shift forks, the selector sleeve of 5th/6th gear, and the gear wheel of 6th gear, free of charge. The recall began Oct. 17, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. I commented on your last ride on this bike. Mine was making the same noise when cold at idle and was really bad on a 3rd gear deceleration. Once it warmed up the noise would settle down some. 5th gear was real easy to miss. After the recall the noise is pretty much gone and it shifts much better. I was going to do the boxer trade But I didn't like the way it felt, very heavy on the front like it had a flat tire.
