The timing on this couldn't be more appropriate. I live in Ohio. We have a close cousin to this fish, the freshwater drum, all over lake erie and it's tributaries. They DO get as big as the one you got here, but that's rare. Most of the big ones run in the 25-30 inch range, and if you get one much bigger, it's rare. Anyhow, was out in the canoe yesterday fishing for whatever would bite on a minnow, in about 12 feet of water, just inside the break wall in East Harbor, at the western end of Lake Erie. Ultralight rod and reel, but I have it spooled with 8lb test. The thin braided stuff. anyhow, something hits it, starts pulling off line... and just like you I went for a ride for about 10 minutes. Finally got it up and there we are... big big freshwater drum. Didnt' have a scale with me but he measured 31 inches anyhow. Hoisting his rear end into the canoe was a pain. Most fun I've had canoe fishing in a long time! :)

I caught an 8lb carp on 4lb test ultra light 2 Septembers ago, took me 28min to get him. 2 weeks ago, same 4lb test ultra light I was slaying smallies and stripers at the dam, but something big took my line instantly out inot the super swift current....there was nothing I could do and it slaughtered my line. I suspect it was a massive hybrid striper. Then last month I caught a 47" 46lb flathead, and a week later a 45" 43lb flathead on my cheap ass $17.99 Matzuo with 50lb test spider wire and I more or less was able to manhandle em...lol!

Awsome experience.

I'm in New Jersey. I grew up fishing on the Delaware Bay. In May, we see black drum up to 80lbs. In the fall, we catch what we call puppy drum which are the black drum that were born that spring (I believe). The puppy drum have the dark bars running down the side the way sheepshead do. People confuse them all the time. The barbels on the chin are the best way to tell the difference.

Fishing from a kayak in the ocean is actually pretty dumb. Didn't you see the video where a guy caught a massive fish that was bleeding and splashing around when a great white shark came up and ate it? After he ate it, he then went on to ATTACK THE KAYAK. I mean if that guy had flipped the boat he would have definitely been attacked and probably eaten. Instead the shark managed to take some big chunks out of the kayak.

+Hans Wurscht Why are you so angry? You must be grasping at straws if your first rebuttal is insulting me. secondly, fish DO in fact handle stress better than others, so being that it manages to fight for several minutes and it swimming when released shows me that it is a remarkably strong fish. so now your entire counterattack falls apart.
@hanswurscht327
@hanswurscht327 8 жыл бұрын
Nope, it doesnt. If a fish swims away after being caught doesnt mean he's going to survive the next days. There are studys and observations that show exactly that. My point is: if you want to release fish, handle them as carefully as possible. Get a big landing net, leave them in the water to unhook them, simply minimize the time they are not in the water. They fought for their lifes, they need to breath. And no, im not a treefucker, i`m a fisherman myself. If you want to eat the fish, kill it asap.

That's a black drum, I caught one at Port Mansfield East Cut South Texas. It weighed around 35#, was 40 inches long. Caught it using Cajin Line red line 12# test. Fought it from the bank around 45 minutes. Awesome fish, heck of a fight.

Good sized drum. I live on the Arkansas River, which is a major tributary of the Mississippi, and we consider drum a nuisance fish, or trash fish, that can ruin your cat fishing in a hurry. Fun to catch the big ones though!

Actually, you were right about the oysters walking away. They don't have anything to swim with, but they do have very thin "arms" in their mouths that they will put out in order to move or catch prey.

suggestion, leave the drag alone - instead snub the spool with your reel hand when you haul back on your pump, release and reel in the gained line, that way if he runs during your pump, you just move your hand off the spool. reeling against the drag on a spinning reel just puts twists in your line. in a yak you have the advantage that the fish can tow you, so its harder for him to break you off. I've conqured some pretty rowdy pelagic fish in a kayak here in hawaii. just saying.

I had a similar experience once - after a half hour on 12# test and never seeing the fish the captain said it must be a ray and wanted to cut it off. I said not till I saw it after that long. After 45 minutes I reeled in a 35" redfish. The damn scale only went to 20# so I'm guessing there but I got to let him go to fight another day. Just maybe...
