Kevin definitely not going to calm down. As he gets bigger, the more dominant and colorful he becomes in my opinion. The decision will be very hard to make because he looks so awesome colored up. I had to move mines at one point back and forth between tanks.

Hi David, maybe give it some time for the Texas and salvini to sort themselves out. It’s probably the Texas showing he’s the tank boss . As everyone grows out things will settle down. Love the tank, always amazing.

I have been hoping that, but I don't know. These fish do have a reputation for being on the more aggressive side, and he could definitely worsen as he gets older. I'll see, but I might have a trick up my sleeve before I get rid of old Kevin permanently. Thank you, Stefanos!

I was shocked the first time I used the wave maker and saw the shimmer that it created with the lights and surface agitation. It is a must in large tanks that not a lot of people talk about.

Dear Cichlid Charmer, I was given an idea just yesterday that I haven’t tried yet. Was told to put a small mirror (inside) the aquarium and see if the cranky fish try’s to waste some energy on himself…. Apparently it can help. 🤷

David, That sucks about your Salvini. Maybe add more Caves for her to hide in throughout the tank. I have never kept a EB Texas cichlid I do know they can get mean. I think you will need to add some Dither fish to the tank to be honest. You could add a couple Bala sharks they get big and can handle their own. I have a male Salvini that took up refuge in my Ship that has a cave in it. He is colorful but hides because my Green Terror is a butt hole sometimes. I call him Dozer because he kind of just charges forward but doesn't do any damage but he acts like a little prick sometimes lol. My green terror is picky he only eats floaty pellets. he doesn't eat flakes or the food that sinks to the bottom. He does eat just floating pellets. I was able to get a FX 6 during Petsmarts Black friday weekend sale. I got it for 167 bucks new. What a steal. I also bought a 407 and a 207 cheap. They were all 40 percent off and a extra 100 bucks off if you bought it super early in the morning. the fx6 is for my Mbuna tank once I get that setup. I am also going to run 2 Tidal 110 filter on it. It should be plenty of filtration for the tank. Thanks for showing the Tank off. I do hope you can keep the texas Cichlid

Great video David. Just yesterday I noticed that one of my salvins was colored down She is one of 4 that are in my 550 gallon aquarium. She was trying to hide also. I tried to catch her. But not able to extract her. I was stressing all the other fish. So I hope she pulls through.

I have the same thing with a pair of Electric Blue Acara I have with a pair of Angelfish, I can not feed the tank for a couple days and then give the tank some Northfin 2mm pellets and they will watch them sink to the bottom of the tank without touching them, but, if I throw in some Cichlid flakes they go crazy! Make it make sense.

CC: love to bits yr true parrot! Before you remove Kevin - please try healthy doses multiple vitamins vitamins B's - mixed with aloe vera. I know I have suggested this before but Kevin Will calm down you're so Salvini Will tend to brighten up - maybe not the full extent but much better. Okay I won't bug you again about this but I guarantee it's worth a try and the results are always lovely and healthy.

@@CichlidCharmer I share my Centrum for adults two tabs, Nature's Bounty Magnesium excellent for synaptic calming, Jamieson's B 100 complex, Dulse, Prairie Naturals - D3 two tabs for every pill ... everything goes in the blender with a cup of Aloe... fish Love dulse- which you chop by hand for the iodine and other sea elements.

What did you use to treat your parrot for parasites? I have some africans with sunken bellies and tried metroplex and prazi without success. At least mine still eat.

They need to eat medicated food if it’s a parasite. Trying mixing it adding seachem focus and garlic guard. Also be sure it is not coming from not eating.

Let us know if you can get the salvini to color up mine lost her color more than a year ago and she is the boss of the tank. She used to be bright yellow but was the tank bully so I moved her to another tank a 75 with two severum and she went pale. I kept her there for at least 6 months and she never colored back up, now she back in the big tank with everyone about the same size she still the boss but mostly blue color very little yellow.

My red jewels will fluctuate between bright reds and dull grey and blue. My guess your salvini is getting picked on and is causing her to down colour. Kevin even bring a jerk is an awesome fish, unfortunately he is still growing, as long as the two are there it’s likely going to continue. But maybe a Kevin and your black nasty can share a tank? I know pairing a set of bazookas sounds like a war zone but sometimes just having something that matches the aggression settles it down, with little space. Having a group of true parrots will be fantastic if you ask me. All in all I hope it works out, stay happy and healthy good sir Dave

I agree with you. As far as Kevin goes, from what I understand, the Nasty would destroy him in a matter of minutes. They need to be completely alone or share a tank as a mating pair. But... that doesn't mean it has never worked before. There's usually an exception somewhere. I'm just not willing to risk it. Thanks my friend! Always good to hear from you.

@@CichlidCharmerI hear you 100% and it’s the same thing that stopped me from adding a frontosa at least 20 times. I get prepared, I have things ready and the guy at my LFS tells me it’s 50/50 it will destroy my other fish. It has stopped me every time even though I still want a blue zaire frontosa, my plans in the future are to reduce my peacocks and make it a peacock mbuna tank giving back my 90 gallon, this could be a decent option for that but I am not shy at this point of combining things to see if it works, I have lots of tanks if I need to move things around so I’m making that my new years goal for 2025. As is I have the best I feel collection of fish in my area so I don’t feel a need to just drop everything because of it. Great things take time so with that being said, don’t mix the black nasty and Texas cichlid, it could work in a giant tank but like my dreams of frontosa it’s a lot of room for potentially 1 fish and that’s ok until whatever happens, but it does move away from what I commonly do which is to mix species and make choices based on behaviour. It’s a toss up, like I said in a prior video I’m happy with things right now so making too many changes could stir a tsunami of things. Stay happy and healthy my friend

@@HapiPETSWM I love your perspective. I am not afraid to try things out -- in fact, I'm about to do that with Kevin, but in a different way. We'll see how that goes. I just have to be careful adding fish to tanks where I might have to catch them if it'll be too much of a nightmare catching them. I think I need to be more careful with San Quentin, because with all that decor in there, it's going to be so hard to catch anyone without removing it. I'm excited to see what you think about my upcoming Kevin Experiment LOL.

Kevin, you're acting just like my Jalo Reef "Java", a real A-hole. You remember my Salvini and how colored down he "was" yup, Java chased him to death I found "Sal" floating, sigh. Just when all were doing great in the tank, I didn't see any more aggression until I added the new guys and then things got worse again. Maybe Kevin could go into Alcatraz but again you don't want the inmates throwing a riot, hope you work things out with Kevin. None of my cichlids will eat pellets the babies do but not the older ones they would rather watch the pellets go by them and float around on the substate leaving my clown loach in heaven whom by the way is a fat torpedo. Buck needs a sidekick so here are a few names; Igor from Young Frankenstein, Barney you know from the Flintstones, Gromit from Wallace & Gromit cartoon, and good old Robin from you my favorite Batman and Robin. I always have a few more if needed haha. Thanks for the great info in this video, I just might have to try a second wavemaker in the 90gal to curb the psychos if anything will.

These are breeding colors and they other color variant is nor, look at genus Apistogramma or most other central/South American cichlids, black and yellow are warning colors that this individual is in a protective, aggressive mood. just look at wasps, bumblebees, poison dart frogs we do know not to touch them because they can and will do us harm if provoked or handled. Fish will out of breeding season adopt a more muted color scheme, WHY? Because why would advertise more than necessary where you are to potential predators, the black and yellow barring is to show other fish predators of eggs and fry that I will fight you to the death if you try and eat my babies and YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! But why be the most obvious choice otherwise out of breeding mood and draw attention to yourself and be the prime target. And in this case there is no point provoking Kevin more than necessary by being even more visible, get her a guy that will change the dynamic or as you said create a lot more LOS disruptor interior material. What you can do is tory and place your branches, rocks etc in more concentrating heaps that will create more defined territories for both, remember all your fish wants some cover if the "Imaginary" bad dude comes, but fish still have that in their DNA even if you do not have a giant River otter in your tank. Btw you have such a great narrator voice and you filming is BBC class it is such a joy watching your "movies", oh and my advice you probably new this already but some other of your audience might not, Cheers from a biologist here in the freezing land of Sweden.

Your Texas cichlid is not a good temperament match for the other cichlids you have like the true parrot, oscar, severum and salvini cichlid. Those cichlids are not as fighty as the Texas cichlid. Sort of a shame because the Texas is a beautiful fish. You could put him in your hap tank and he would do well there but I think you are a cichlid purist who only keeps cichlids from one Lake or river in each tank. But you could create a Florida biotope where pretty much every cichlid species you have your thanks can be found swimming around in the canals and lakes there. That way you could say your aquarium is natural in a Florida sort of way where jewel fish, oscars, mbunas, Peacock cichlids, jaguars, etc. are all swimming and living in the same canals together.

No, he definitely isn't. I knew that going in, but I thought it might work because of the size of the tank. And he isn't killing anyone, but I still don't like it. I actually love your idea, and now I'm considering it. My pH is too high already for the Americans, exactly the same as my African tank, so that wouldn't be an issue. Very interesting! I had a frontosa tank with high pH. Had other African cichlids in it. I also had a large jack Dempsey and a blue acara that I threw in small. They lived for years in that tank. And colours were gorgeous.
