The Hugh Nibley theory that the Liahona has ties to the word "queen bee" reminds me of an experience I had with my Grandpa. I used to go hiking with him just about every Saturday. He was a bee keeper and this one time he caught this bee in a box and that bee would try to escape by moving to one of the edges of the box. He would follow the direction the bee would indicate and it led us to a wild beehive with combs and honey. It was sooo cool! And with the small size of the Liahona, it totally fits. Not sure what the word for queen bee is in Hebrew or Egyptian, but cool.

Is the second spindle manually adjustable? That way they can move it to point at the icon of what they want, and then the first spindle will in turn point where to find that specific thing they're asking about. Or is it independent and will decide for them what they need next at that moment?
@oneclimbs8 ай бұрын
That’s an interesting idea. So they could select what they were looking for with one spindle and the second one pointed the way to it. I wonder if there was a default setting for just generally where the Lord wanted them to travel.

The Mormon yeshiva has a video on KZbin about the Astros theology of the book of Mormon. Where he explains that the directions Nephi is describing in the Book of Mormon is like a walk around the mazzaroth. Wondering if the symbols described are related to the constellations and that they symbolize the needs of the people. Speculation on my part.

I always imagined from those descriptions that there was was amd outer ring and inner ring. One of the rings - whichever had the symbols for provisions and what not - would be able to spin freely in the housing. So when Lehi asked God where they could obtain food - the direction spindle did not move - yet the provisions spindle and the ring containing the required symbols would both move - the spindle toward the location and the ring to match that symbol with where the spindle stopped. I also assumed that the direction spindle did not just point in one direction - but moved according to their faith. So, possibly, they might find easier paths - ones with more vegetation or less rocks and/or robbers - if they had more faith - and they had more arduous paths of they had less. And the spindles would give written instructions or chastenings depending on their faithfulness.

Ordinary magnetic compasses have two spindles (pointers), one pointing magnetic north, the other pointing to the azimuth (direction of travel). Magnetism was already known in Lehi's day (mentioned by Thales of Miletus).

@zionmama1508 ай бұрын
6:36 the reason for TWO spindles is that you cannot have proper revelation or gain any wisdom without the antithesis. One spindle told them where to go and the other was the antithesis. There must be opposition in all things. So when trying to discern, remember you have to have two choices so you can know which one is truly right. Also, having two spindles helps you know when the compass isn’t working, because nothing will be clear.

So why does everyone think the Liahona was crafted to a technology or likeness of relics to that time. If this was gifted from god why couldn’t it have been crafted to like todays type of craftsmanship/ technology. It would be controlled by god anyways so…. think of digital watches. Adding that tech/ abilities to the mental image of what is described in the Book of Mormon. The liahona would be able to tell them anything. Images could change on the spindles different pictures could appear wherever. Who knows, and not knowing technology, the Liahona would be described as made of curious craftsmanship.
