Microsoft could create a handheld that runs Xbox and PC games with "Play anywhere," and could conceivably launch a resource light version of Windows that can run Steam. Don't discount the fact that Microsoft is a much bigger technology company than Valve, that they have mobile and laptop divisions already they can draw on, and that they might pump more resources to get a thing out earlier if Sony is genuinely in the mix.
