I think the "No" vote meant no to employing a fundamental political change that was not fully explained or even fleshed out. Oh dear! Not awkward at all Amelia!! There are a majority of people thinking for themselves like myself and many people I know. Peter Dutton and Jacinta have been nothing but exemplary in the way they have conducted themselves with dignity, integrity and honesty. They voiced what many Australians were afraid to say or be outspoken about because of exactly what is evident in this interview.... that no voters were haters and racists. I and many others LOVE aboriginal people, I bought and read dreamtime stories to my children when they were young. I am an immigrant from Poland living under communist rule so I understand oppression. Staying in victimhood does not allow them to move forward!!!!!! Reconciliation is impossible whilst all non indigenous Australians have to 'recite' / listen to "I acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which we are meeting. I pay my respects to their Elders, past and present, and the Aboriginal Elders of other communities who may be here today. " at nauseam and to be welcomed back to our country with" We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work, live and fly. We pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging" every time I fly qantas. It has lost it's meaning!!!!!! This is just the beginning ......... There is so much more to this than what I've said above but you can be assured that I nor the people I know were swayed by the NO campaign as it was very clear what would happen if the referendum was successful. The biggest factor why it failed is that although Mr Albanese said it was a simple one pager he is on record saying what he fully supports not just the one pager. This was going to be just a tiny stepping stone for him to implement so much more to alienate the non indigenous people. In this case, the Labour government was resoundingly silent on how 'The Voice to Parliament' would work. No legislation drafted around it left Australians unwilling to vote Yes to something so ambiguous. Add to that, our Indigenous Australians have very active representatives in Parliament already. Amelia is so biased in this regard, she should not have been allowed to speak about the results of the referendum. She couldn’t even come to grips with the fact that even Labor voters voted NO, it was the NO campaign’s fault for Labor voters saying NO, and it was very, very unprofessional behaviour from a so called “unbiased” program. The fact remains evident, that indigenous, and non Indigenous Australians voted NO, not because of the “evil” NO campaign, but because of the incompetent leadership of the YES campaign. The YES campaign used hundreds of millions of taxpayers money for the YES campaign, but couldn’t even get their message straight, Albo says no treaty, Linda Burney says treaty, Albo says no reparations, Thomas Mayo says reparations, and pay the rent, Albo, Linda, Noel, Marcia, and all their ilk say every indigenous person wants the voice, yet time and time again, you saw, and heard many, many indigenous elders, and people say they don’t want the voice, which has shown up in the results of the referendum’s failure, only the areas in the inner city, voted for the voice, the majority of the population, indigenous, and non indigenous voted a resounding NO. We need to now move forward, and find meaningful outcomes for disadvantaged indigenous Australians, and focus more on the rising costs of living. A Royal Commission needs to be established, to find out where the billions of taxpayer dollars go for indigenous projects, and communities needs, because it seems it isn’t getting to the people that need it most. Very unprofessional 60 minutes!

It was a campaign of warm, fuzzy feelings but that expected a blank cheque from the Australian people. Dutton is right in saying that constitutional recognition would have passed. Pretty much everyone would have voted for that. But what we were right NOT to vote for was a mystery body of unelected officials who will likely come from the activist outrage class having completely uneven say on the things that effect Australians. It was NEVER just about recognition otherwise, we would have all happily voted Yes. SPOT ON! There are NO Australian ‘First Nations’! The term ‘First Nations’ belongs ONLY to specific NORTH AMERICAN indigenous tribes, and has NOTHING to do with indigenous Australians! Some thieving, disrespectful, Australian inner-city latte-leftists thought the term might be politically advantageous, so they STOLE IT! That's right. They saw something that belonged to a specific group of indigenous people, they wanted it for themselves, so they STOLE IT! Sound familiar?!

Get off of your high horse Amelia. Voting no does not mean we care less about indigenous issues than you. It means that this pathetic proposal is not the way to go about it. Typical elitism, so out of touch with reality.

I didn’t vote any of the two because I genuinely do not understand Australian culture or enough about what it is that they are trying to achieve with all this …. I said to myself I better just pay the fine before I’m responsible for anything that might affect anyone in Australia sorry. I might look dumb but I rather look dumb then affect anyone by making a decision that might be incorrect
@nennesezagain Жыл бұрын
thank you for your honesty! and your willingness to be serious in your responsibility in this, I am seriously impressed! But there is a thing called a donkey vote, where you would, for instance, write yes and no in the same one box. It would be an invalid vote and not counted and you would avoid the fine.

How could anyone vote YES to the proposition? No details, no clarification on the construction of the voice and no clear direction on real outcomes for Indigenous Australians. He made it about himself and divisive politics rather than garnering bi partisan support which was key to get it through.

In the year 2023 the indigenous peoples need to assimilate and take care of their own lives like any other citizen. No one should be guaranteed food, housing, healthcare, etc. on the public dole just because of their race or genetics. Enough of this Welfare State nonsense that only keeps people dependent on government handouts.
@begonebegone7825 Жыл бұрын
Obviously you don't understand about the real reason of welfare. It's precisely to keep people uneducated and not to let them assimilate with general population because of GOVERNMENT PREJUDICE AND OPPRESSION OF PEOPLES WHOSE LAND WAS STOLEN FROM THEM. LOOK WHAT HAPPENED IN RACIST AMERICA CONCERNING THE INDIANS AND BLACK POPULATION
@Knowbody42 Жыл бұрын
But you see, Aboriginal people were much better off before, when they didn't even have houses, would murder each other, and the average life expectancy was less than 30. Now they have it so much worse with free money from the government, and access to housing, food, clean water, modern medicine, and first world technologies.
@carnage2k4 Жыл бұрын
I'll tell you why. Because I had to spend an hour trying to work out what "the voice" was... What it meant, what it could do, it was poorly explained to the point where it seemed clandestine. I still don't think I really know what the point was. Saying 'aboriginal recognition' ad nauseum means nothing, we have representatives already, WHY do we need to make a special group for a particular set of people? The entire concept actually seem racist to me. It's hypocritical to want everyone to be equal, then in the same breath elevate one group to have a special body.

@steveboness7437 Жыл бұрын
How irrelevant is 60 Minute? The indigenous population is, at best, 3% of our population. Of those how many are full blooded? For those that truly experience that disadvantage, why? If we acknowledge even 1,000,000, that's $48,000.00 per person spent each year compared to $21,000.00 on each non-indigenous person. So, if that disadvantage hasn't improved, where has the money gone?

If there is one thing we should've learnt from history is that throwing money at a problem can actually exacerbate rather than relieve the problem. Welfare money without some remedial educational responsibilities has created generations of people dependant on disability/dole etc. to fuel injurious habits particularly alcoholism and as we have seen in the Alice and elsewhere violent criminal behaviour.

IPA analysis undertaken earlier this year found that when the Productivity Commissioner’s report is adjusted for inflation (to September 2022 dollars), the amount of spending directed towards Indigenous Australians equates to approximately $39.5 billion over one year. This amount is approximately equivalent to annual federal government spending on Australia’s national defence. Come on. Add to that 50% of Australia has been given to indigenous peoples. DYOR.
