Born a ‘pad brat’ in Paderborn, Gareth began to follow his father’s journey, and joined junior leaders, but quickly discovered it wasn’t the career for him.
Finding himself in a lucrative, successful career in sales built Gareth his dream life, with expensive cars and holidays, before an accident at home changed his life…
Gareth was diagnosed with epilepsy and his life began to unravel, losing his job, driving licence, and his wife. A rollercoaster journey left Gareth sectioned after being found in the local woods after a seizure. It was his childhood passion for the outdoors that would be his key to overcoming the adversity he faced. Starting a KZbin channel and developing a passion for outdoor challenges, like the infamous Fan Dance, Gareth has gone on to complete incredible physical feats, and has written a book about his life, ‘What The Ruck Just Happened’

Brilliant interview Phil. Some of this resonated so much. I hit rock bottom after leaving the Army and it got worse and worse as the years went by, even after gaining two degrees and speaking 4 languages I still felt empty and like a failure as a man and a human being. Thanks for this because it helps to put things into perspective 🙏

@@ForceRadioHQ I managed to conquer those feelings in my late 40s mate. There's always light at the end of the tunnel. Sometimes we just have to swallow our pride and reach out for help! 🙏

Love these Debriefs with Big Phil. I think it is so interesting listening to other Soldier's Careers and this will be documented through History. My own Career, I don't even bother mentioning, but my Son is very proud and tells People at every opportunity. 😂 I learnt to speak a few Languages fluently. I also make a good brew and known to make such at ANY opportunity. 😂 I Served both Regs and Reserves, or TA as it was known at the time. They were interesting times and I had an absolutely humours Career.
