Just in time logistics was a big thing in NZ.... then all of a sudden it was taking 2 months to get stuff out of Australia air freight (yes pandemic). However, the people that relied on just in time logistics really found out the problems with this system in a remotish location.

A big part of supply chain fascination with JIT is also obsolescence. People want the latest more than the older. That means being stuck with stuff/parts for the older costs a lot.

Just in Time has a little bit to do with inventory tax. The more you store the more they tax you. Like real estate. The fact they're decommissioning these littoral ships tells you that they are really bad. They have too be a lot worse than most of us realize, otherwise Congress would be making them keep the ships just as you say.

Sal, have you read a book by Frederick J. Haskins, name (strangely enough! ) The Panama Canal, copyright 1913? It is a contemporaneous account "in layman's terms" the building and operation of the canal. I have a picture I took from the bridge wing, the first time i transited the canal in 1980, that matches up perfect with a picture in the book.

On the topic of Energy. European Gas storres are over 90% full. LNG terminals have been established, and France has gotten a lot of their broken reactors online again. Although it may not be prittey, I don't think that we will see Energy shortages, even if this coming winter is bad. Last year we had a large ammount of mild weather and ended up with 60% in the stores. I think there is enough wiggleroom to get worse weather.

Sal, thank you very much for all this info. I feel that a war with China is imminent and it is just a matter of when not if. There are a lot of things going on with shipping. I really like the report of more coal being shipped than ever before. And our politicians think that crushing the coal industry in this country is going to stop coal use! It’s laughable. In the 70’s barging coal to the gulf for export was a big business. LNG shipping doesn’t surprise me at all it’s going to be used by any country that can get it. I know several years ago there was talk in our country to build more LNG loading terminals I think we only have 4 at present but I maybe mistaken. Thank you I really enjoyed your reporting.

Looks like there is a growing correlation between the Panama Canal and El Nino effect, and it has been getting worse, as in stronger negative effects in the last 24 years... From reading "El Niño adds to climate woes affecting shipping" August 23, 2023 By Rakin Rahman looks like 2024 will have a greater effect on shipping with a lack of water to travel through the canal than this year

If the Atlantic trade currents change drastically it would indicate a shutdown of the Atlantic Conveyor. That would pretty much mean we'd enter a drastic cooling period in the Northern hemisphere. "The Day After Tomorrow" was a movie based on the science of it. What global warming or climate change spokesmen never mention is that when temperature rise to a certain level, the Earth will respond by entering a cooling period as the heat breaks the currents that spread heat around

@Texas240
@Texas240 Жыл бұрын
@@xr6lad - I wasn't saying the end is nigh. I was merely pointing out that IF the Atlantic currents change drastically, we will have bigger concerns than "does this affect shipping". I was also pointing out the secret that climate change activists never mention. IF the global temps do rise (or, more accurately WHEN they rise, because the earth was in a warming trend thousands of years before humans started burning fossil fuels), the Earth will end up entering a cooling phase. Models predict this will occur, even if Man is carbon neutral, in about 55,000 (and the global temps will continue to rise until then). The Earth really doesn't care about humans or what we do. The actual drivers of climate change are beyond our technological means to control (tectonic, volcanic, solar, meteor, etc). So, if humans don't decide to quit wasting resources fighting over lines on the map, what race, religion, or tribe someone is from, etc ONE DAY, the end will be nigh. Or, at least as far as life as we know it, even if some humans survive and adapt. Based on history, eventually Earth will catch another catastrophic meteor. No amount of carbon capture will save the climate from THAT.

Did you confuse issues even more so? No. Not at all... what you did, is drive home the point that the Leaders we need in this country need to be the best at hiring the smartest people around them, to work thru these issues. AND not just knee-jerk reaction, but work together with global partners, and figure out long terms solutions. Tariffs? Bluster? LONG TERM VISION is needed. Some people in place with a keen sense of history, to see where the world came from, and where it is headed. Let's stop arguing over whether or not the science of a thing is right. The world's oceans temps are rising. That alone is changing how major ocean currents are moving. What were once small, regional players are now much bigger nations, on the global stage. We need to start treating them like equals, rather than like a distant cvousin to be ignored. Finding solutions will NOT be easy, and anyone who says so, is delusional.

The bulk carrier getting out of the Black Sea may have hugged the west coast to be out of the Ukrainian surface drones areas of opperation. The support ships of the Philippine Navy supplying it's reef base are reportedly going to get help from the US Navy ships being based in the Philippines. China wants to secure the South China sea for it's own use economic and military also to exclude other nations. The straights ships would use to support Taiwan or to block Chinese invasion forces needing to get to the eastern coast of Taiwan. The reefs China could also forward base long range anti ship missiles. The political situation is China may become less stable. Xi is isolated from information and the economy of China may be getting worse causing unrest in the people. Agression against other nations may be used as a distraction.

23:15 - Ruling the waves? Hmm... As the token Limey on this channel, I'd like to make a point about the words to the often misunderstood and frequently misquoted patriotic song 'Rule, Britannia' for anybody who cares about such things. The chorus is NOT 🎵'Rule, Britannia - Britannia rules the waves', as sung by drunken Brits taunting foreigners at football matches; it's 'Britannia, RULE the waves'. It's an old-fashioned word-reversal for increased emphasis. 'Rule the waves' has a totally different meaning from 'Rules the waves', and it makes me angry when people - especially Brits - get it wrong. The song is not about swaggering and boasting and putting people down - it's about lifting spirits and straightening backbones. Saying 'Britannia rules the waves' is a stupid, childish 'king of the castle' boast that's patently a load of tosh. And it misses the whole point of the song. The word is RULE, not rules. It focuses on hope, determination and resolve and is NOT declaring Britain to be 'number one' because we've got enough nukes to bomb aggressors back to the Stone Age. That's irrelevant. By saying 'rule', the song's simply telling Britannia [the female personification of the nation's spirit, like Uncle Sam in the States] to stay alert and defend Britain. It's got nothing to do with claiming to be the greatest. 🎵'Rule, Britannia - Britannia, RULE the waves...' Means 'Go on, girl - get off your backside and build some ships! Patrol our shores! Show some determination! Get out there and protect us!' And as long as you do, and never give up, Britons will remain free. (So far, so good...🤭) The song is not boasting about our military might; it's telling Britannia to persevere, to stay vigilant, to keep trying, to maintain an effective navy to patrol the seas around our island. By staying alert, she'll keep us free. If she does her job, we never shall be slaves. That's all. The song's words were written at a time when people still used English with precision. It's sad that so many people genuinely don't 'get' the difference in meaning between 'RULE' and 'RULES'. Thank you for your attention. Drinks and snacks are now being served in the Cocktail Lounge. Strictly speaking the bar is closed, but for your comfort and convenience Britannia will waive the rules...

Lots of different aspects to the Just In Time regime and what can go wrong. Certainly a huge amount of cargo is stack em high sell em low fast moving. There are of course the perishables and that is whole specialist area. There are also niche markets, including many electronic or automotive products, where the product is getting constantly updated. A delayed shipload may have less than half the value if it arrives out of sequence. In the case of some small specialist electronic devices the pace of change is so great that they may never get on board a ship and will always be airfreight.

Thank you, chief, for the report👍.Did the US (well, President Jimmy Carter) really sell the Panama Canal for $1.00USD? I did not know that the canal exchanged much of its water with reservoirs (lakes). I'll have to search for videos on the details of the current engineering of the Panama Canal. JIT (Just-In-Time), SPC (Statistical Process Control) came out of the rebuilding of Japan promises after WWII, and was a result of the work done by W. Edwards Deming. Dan Bongino speaks to the perception Yevgeny Prigozhin was killed - he knew betrayal is one of Putin's pet peeves, and Prigozhin is not stupid and likely in hiding. In 2019, Prigozhin was pronounced "killed" (bomb in a wine crate) in a plane - and was clearly not on that plane. Just sayin'.

any supply chain disruption affects On Time Deliveries and because of penalty clauses in contracts the costs to the shippers goes up. The lessons of WW2 are being forgotten as the participant people die of old age. "Just in time" really means "we trust our future to the Chinese". Even as the Gatun Lake navigation channels for the new locks were being made and blasted and dredged there was comment that the water flow available for the locks was not sufficient in the dry months. The side ponds help a lot but a ship that fills a lock uses the water most wisely.

the amount of energy required to pump all the used water from the bottom lock back to the top is on the order of a couple Gigawatts, which is as much power as a few million-person city. I think the 80% savings figure is the 3 locks with 3 water-saving basins each compared to one lock without water-saving basins. I have read about some ideas to use a combination of generators and pumps or large vacuum ejectors (venturi-powered pumps) to pump water up from the bottom using the potential energy of the water you're filling the lock with from the top. I think it's supposed to be about as effective as 3 basins on its own (60% savings) or about half that effective in combination with 3 basins (70ish% total savings), though no one's done it yet as far as I know because it's a bit complicated and probably a maintenance nightmare.

Just in time (JIT) = Time and Market Place Utility and this adds value to any product. However, disruption in environmental stability is going to impact this. I now work in health care... There is a term in health care called "Homeostasis" which is a biological balance; climate change is disrupting the environmental balance (its real) of the climate. Changes in our climate will change the viability of market utility of products moved on the high seas. As a KP grad ('95) I appreciate your commentary.

This stuff is fascinating, a whole realm of the global economy I was hardly even aware of. Appreciate a good level of depth (ha ha) for non-experts and plenty of references for further reading. Go ahead and talk about climate change, and especially connect the dots when you can. It will affect everything, and we cannot deal with it if we don't face it. Supply chains will have to become MORE robust, resilient, and fault-tolerant, not less so, so the return to Just-in-Time is disappointing short-term thinking.

Philippine governments made a mistake by ejecting US forces. Pride and vanity have a price and Beijing is well aware the relationship between the Washington and Manila is weak. The US does not require basing there for national survival, merely the luxury of regional hegemony which is not even close to the same thing. OTOH Manila has a choice between Chinese and US patronage with China aggressively seeking regional dominance. As the PI was indefensible in WWII (refer to the history of War Plan Orange, like Wake Island etc its fall was expected) it will be difficult to defend in future as Beijing invests in sea power. (The trade deficit between China and the US more than pays for the entire Chinese armed forces, making their military essentially free at US expense.) The average American could not tell you what "Merchant Marine" means. They're not capable of interest beyond trifles and only the relatively rare technically inclined people have the slightest curiosity. Unless someone with economic skin in the game invests money in publicity this will not change even slightly.

Always enjoy the channel! You may want to look at the percentage trend of marine sinkers and casualty data from 1900 to date and apply that to the water temperature rising discussion. When I looked at it, an eyebrow was raised.

Its too bad the US Navy cannot take a ship like the USS ST louis and remodel it to a more useful ship. Look at what they do to cruise ship and other ships by cutting them apart and putting them back together (mostly extending them). Just seems like it would be cheaper than startling from the keel.

You just explained the flaw of today predicament, no ahead preparation and "just in time" are just that. But karma is always around and will give the greed a pair of "knickers" to sleep on.

China's Navy is only Superior and numbers not in strength. There is something to be said for numbers but between the Philippines and Japan without an all-out War China doesn't stand a chance

Go back to the old way of rolling the ships across on logs....but modernize the logs to fixed steel rollers. Itll be slicker than grease!

In Nederland, Colorado there is a steam shovel used in the construction of the Panama Canal. It is a "small" shovel used for maintenance work.
