I have absolutely no reason to be so damn interested in this channel. There's just something so satisfying about listening to Sal talk... he speaks with such a breadth of knowledge and confidant authority on these subjects. I'm constantly impressed by the quantity of fascinating content. Who knew shipping was such a compelling topic? Love it!

1. I guess the offhsore wind farms will transmit DC power to a place on shore where it may use step-up transformers to make up power losses experiencd over long distance electicity transmission. Those plants ashore may or may be ready for receiving, distributing, metering, and controlling big power. Are they under construction, is land acquired/designated for landing off shore power? Have off shore wind farm honchos forgotten to get berthing for the off shore wind farms electricity? 2. If I were King, You would be the Transportation Secretary as long as you keep wearing those fantastic, fun shirts. edit: 3. a side note - In 1880's - 1930s, am fairly certain one of the ways nations paid back loans or acquired a loan was via gold bars that usually shipped by ship.

Here in the UK, companies involved in developing offshore windfarms are reluctant to expand operations due to Goverment reluctance to meet operators tariff demands. That might lead to a freeing up of specialist vessels. Green issues world wide are inevitably tied to "green" electrical generation.

Regarding your dig on airplanes... It's true that ships are the most efficient transport on a per ton basis, BUT the tonnage carried by ships is orders of magnitude greater than that carried by airplanes. So the total CO2 production, which is what matters, is still much much greater for ships.

MARAD Administrator Philips is a accomplished naval officer. The skills and disciplines she had to demonstrate to attain her rank in the Navy are impressive but are in complete antithesis of the knowledge, experience and direction that will be required to advance US maritime strategy for the next decades to come. She would be strongly advised to surround herself with professionals that have deep and intimate experience in the commercial industry. She will be judged by the competence of her appointed staff in this initiative. Best to begin the journey with a strong team on her side…unless she intends to just follow Navy orders. 🇺🇸⚓️

I think in time green ammonia will be the fuel for shipping as it can be used in the engines without much alteration. But we have to get to the stage where we are making so much green electricity which is going to take some time. Should have started 50 years ago.

Interesting discussion about strategy. Having worked in the private sector at a chemical facility, I have some thoughts. The main issue to me is the title of the strategy (nitpicking?), this is way too broad. The security side of this, is definitely in the Navy or USCG wheelhouse. However, by on your comments, security should be only one section, as you listed other areas that are outside security. Each could be managed by stakeholders specific to their expertise. You’re correct about having the USN setting an overall strategy, and they are stakeholders in other area as well, just not all. Fore instance, there should be a strategy on emissions, which involve carriers and EPA, (dirty word… irony). Basically, trying to do something this large will only result in a bad job. Besides, this isn’t very glamorous work. If you were a high ranking officer, wouldn’t you want to be involved with something like… fighting bad guys? My guess is that by the time this is completed, there will be at least a dozen or more leaders. Continuity, sigh…

Tell me this..... Why can't Panama purchase/build some desalination plants to turn ocean water into fresh water. They are making millions of dollars with the Panama Canal
@thamiordragonheart8682
@thamiordragonheart8682 Жыл бұрын
The energy required to pump water into Gatun lake to replace all the rainfall is on the order of a few gigawatts, so the same scale as a city of a few million people in the US, and that doesn't include the power required for desalination, which is much higher. I'd guess supplying the entire traffic of the Panama canal from desalination and pumping would need on the order of 10 GW of continuous power generation. supplying half the water, which would solve the current issues, would require 10s of billions of dollars of capital investment and 5-10 years work before you even start operating the system.

Why do you think having the wind farm construction/Usuport ships US flagged would make a difference? Those ships will go where they can generate most profits for the owners no matter the flag and where they are built - at least if they are from a free capitalist nation that doesnt force them to do otherwise. I can assure you that if a Danish company profits most from prioritizing US customers and isnt contractually bound to do otherwise then they will do so - isn't that how it's supposed to be?

I don't think there's any harm at all in carbon dioxide emissions and in fact some benefit But in the long run I think the most promising non-carbon fuel is ammonia (NH3) At present, ammonia comes largely from carbon fuel processes (so it makes more sense to just use the hydrocarbons as fuel) However NH3 can be produced reasonably efficiently from electricity (see newer lithium salt processes that don't require water electrolysis to produce hydrogen first) That electricity can come from nuclear, hydro, or diffuse (solar, wind) sources According to Saudi Aramco research, NH3 2-stage combustion (rich and then lean) inhibits nitrous oxide emissions (the one thing you'd want to watch out for; with complete combustion you get N2 inert nitrogen and H2O) NH3 requires specialized combustion as ammonia's flame front propagates very poorly (so in piston ICE you have to run lean and get NOx emissions; instead you need a more turbine-like setup) On the plus side, ammonia liquifies readily at around 10 atmospheres of pressure and doesn't have the supercooling requirements of pure H & LNG or the steel embrittlement problem of H So we can produce NH3 reasonably efficiently from non-carbon sources, liquify/transport it fairly readily, and combust it into completely harmless byproducts.

Offshore wind? Oh, crap. A guaranteed failure of a business for more solid engineering, physics and economic reasons than anyone can count. Who would have thought that putting hundreds of hazards in the water would hurt shipping too? Morons.
@robertball3578

Twenty years from now students will be amazed that no one thought that removing gigawatts of energy from the wind would be a source of climate change. Those winds bring cool moist air inland, taking that energy away results in a warmer drier climate. As several others have pointed out, maintenance of structural, mechanical, and electrical components will be expensive due to hurricanes, monster waves, collision from vessels, etc. I see windmills on the west coast out of service because wind speed is too low or too high.

Sal, I agree with your comments on MARAD using the Center for Naval Analysis for studying merchant shipping. While I hold the US Navy in high regard, it is hard to not forget the Zumwalt Class destroyers and the Littoral Combat Ships. There is a basic difference in the merchant marine and the Navy. The merchant marine is based on the premise of making money. Whereas the Navy is based on spending money. Yes, the Navy has to operate under a budget and congressional oversight. If they fail to stay within budget, they can wait for the next budget cycle. If a commercial shipping company fails to make a budget they risk going out of business. You mentioned US shipbuilding. From someone who spent their career working with commercial shipping (oil) companies, we always blamed the demise of a leadership role in commercial shipbuilding on the Navy. The Navy believes in time and material, and cost plus contracts. Whereas commercial shipbuilding must live in a fixed price market. Besides the schools you mentioned, don't forget the University of Michigan, MIT, Webb Institute, University of California Berkeley, University of New Orleans, to name a few of the schools where many of the world's naval architects and marine engineering are educated. Bob

These large amounts of jobs is only in construction fase,if ever. The developers of the wind farms tend to call out to high numbers of workers needed ,probably to get the involved country/ region on the hook. I also think that wind turbines at sea should be done with vertical rotating axles . Can be tighter stacked does not, lise effect from turbulense from up wind turbines ,can be ancored to the bottom with wire chain (floting instalation) Easy to build easy remove . Less moving parts ,more durable. Does not kill birds as mutch as the fan type. These type of turbines are coming out on the market now and will probably be the winning design at most locations soon.

As to that study, I infer from the selection of the CNA that the Maritime Board already knows what its recommended strategy will be, and just wants the right holy water sprinkled on it. when they say they'll 'engage" (act like they're listening to) "stakeholders" (insiders), I expect it will live up to the motto "Everything government touches turns to crap."
