Lebanon is probably my favorite country ever. I’m not Lebanese, but I’ve had the privilege to study in Beirut for two years and I had an unforgettable experience there. The Lebanese people certainly are the most fun and friendly in the Middle East.

Glad you could see the good side of Lebanon. As a Lebanese working in the US, I keep hearing about the negatives in the news and it often comes from those who never visited Lebanon or seen the beauty of that country. Last week, like many other Lebanese who had decided to spend summer in Lebanon, we were faced with an ugly situation. Do we leave? we have children, is it wiser to leave? what if we get stuck there? What if there is a war? will my children get traumatised and not want to go back to Lebanon? But what if nothing happens? What if it is more talk than anything? My family… I haven’t gotten enough of them, my home, my Lebanon, we are meant to be there for another 3 weeks, ? My grandma… After a lot of back and forth, we decided to leave with a very heavy heart. I cried for 48 hours straight; I cried for all the pain that we as Lebanese have had to endure since I can remember. I cried for the injustice of it all. I cried for my family, I cried for the ones in Lebanon who have had to deal with so much trauma, I cried hoping that I will be able to return soon, I cried thinking of all the children of war. With everything that the world has been able to cancel, how are wars still a thing in 2024?? While I am so grateful to have a roof above my head and to live in safety (a basic human right), I, like every other Lebanese across the world, feel a strong sense of longing, I like every other Lebanese hold on to the beautiful memories, to the hope of a brighter future, to the moment I will step foot back in our beautiful country. Being a child of the Middle East is knowing all too well what this feels like 💔
