Varanasi Walks At least in 5e, they sort of are and aren’t their own species at the same time. They’re awakened trees, but they awakened on their own because destiny and tree souls or something. The implication-at least to me-is that they have a soul strong enough that a dryad wouldn’t really be able to bond to the tree for fear of some kind of soul smoothie situation. That being said, a regular awakened tree would be very similar but likely without the powerful soul, so maybe that could work.

So does that imply that if the oak tree is damaged (say, by lightning) or dying, the dryad will then change appearance? Outside of the initial suffering from the lightning strike, might she display a scar? Would she seem to grow frail and old if the tree is nearing death from age? Seems like an interesting idea for a one shot adventure... local dryad tree gets struck by lightning and the tree isn't going to live much longer...so she's begging the adventurers to either help her relocate, somehow save her tree, maybe. Or - she has a daughter, and while she can accept her own imminent demise, she wants the adventurers to make sure her little girl gets what she needs.

Dryads can also pick Livewood trees as a substitute to Oak tree sometimes. Livewood trees are incredibly rare so that’s why you don’t see it often. “Dryads occasionally make their homes in livewood trees instead of oak trees. Such a dryad looks no more kindly upon the felling of her tree than other dryads do, but the felling of her livewood tree does not kill her-nor does it end her dependence on the tree. You gave me a character concept, either a Druid or ranger who fell for a dryad that tried but failed to charm him. They then live a happy life for several years, until there are rumblings of a war. At this point, the man reveals it was never a charm but a choice for him to stay. He then leaves and fights in the rumored war, however while he was gone his beloved was destroyed but no body was ever recovered. He returns to see the tree his loved one was linked to is now just a burnt stump, then starts to try to find whoever did it as he left fences and signs and all sorts of indicators. This concept leaves room for the dryad being alive but the character having no way of knowing that, while also giving him a reason to adventure.

So, do Dryads ever fall naturally in love and have happy and healthy equal relationships? Like, if they try to charm a human who's already in love with them...and the spell fails, can the human still try to convince the Dryad to have a relationship (where the human retains his free will) or does it just not work?
@wratched3 жыл бұрын
My guess, going on fairy lore, is no. Fairies are usually depicted either as emotionally stunted, midly psychopathic, or so alien in their desires that they cannot be comprehended. That's why they abduct people- they are looking for a way to experience the emotions we do.
@christianmunz21032 жыл бұрын
According to traditional lore, that's about as rare as seen three ravens standing on top of each other in the wild. It's practically a no. Maybe one in several million will. If you want to do it for your campaign, you certainly can, (I certainly am), but otherwise, basically no. Like what @wratched said in the other comment, they don't understand human emotions and so can't truly comprehend love in any form aside from physical. Otherwise known as lust.

But eventually our DM gave in and allowed it by giving our friend a powerful cursed item. The cursed item forbade the Dryad from ever entering the Terel of any tree she could potentially bond with, but also perpetually cast the Heal spell on her to stave off the effects of Glirgimer. And so, my friend played a mentally unstable, pessimistic and depressed Dryad. Sad story.

Guess its left up to the dm for his crafting purposes. My guess is she is free from the sickness because she no longer soul linked to the tree, but losing the link drives her mad. Or maybe she is still linked to a 'dead soul' and that drives her crazy, but i imagine the terel would still bind her. She could also go mad, but naturally stay in the boundary like a haunting ghost.
@Storywalker45 жыл бұрын
She uses the tree for sustenance. So, it would follow that if she stayed bound to the tree and its terel she would become more ravenous with hunger the longer she was without her food. She'd look as decayed or damaged as the tree looked. If they stayed bound to the tree, and cannot feed, a dyrad turns into a nature ghoul. Slowly fading away. A dead forest just became a lot more dangerous.

For a fey lord, creating a dryad is a good way to get rid of a fey enemy. She won't be able to leave the area she is bound to, and certain kinds of oak don't live as long as certain kinds of fey.

Me, a DM bulldozing DnD lore but with pretty concept art to go with various scenes: "Okay so as you guys enter the grove you see a magnificent tree growing right up from the center, with a small pool below it. A spirit appears next to the pool, beckoning you forward and declaring it speaks for the trees. What do you do? Oh by the way hang on Ive got some art for this one...." Interesting campaign hook idea - there is a forest that is dying because of some evil and unnatural magic inside it, and a dryad finds it desperate enough to actually leave her terel to seek help from a human town that the animals tell her is nearby.

I love the idea of the Driads only being bound to some threes with a stronger aura. However I don't like restricting it only to oaks. It would be better to expand this for some "great threes" of other bioms, such as a sequoias or baobas. These Driads could have different characteristics and personalities.

one of my favorite stories i told as a dm in dnd was i had a town of primarily wood elves dryads and druids living in this town where the tree's were molded by magic to form the houses and were all smaller seedlings of a massive oak tree in the center that gave life to the area. the delima the party faced was how to stop the fungus demon lord form plauging the tree and its people.

Awesome video! In the game I'm currently playing I am a doppleganger right now, buuuut I always make sure to have a backup character if something happens to my main, and with some digging around and checking with my DM she agreed on a dryad using the rules from the "EN5ider 159 - Playing Nymphs" which has rules for nymphs, dryads, and naiads (earth, forest and water basically). We have reflavoured a little bit with the gear and so on, like instead of using weapons I'm reshaping my arms, and to balance that advantage a disarm would break that part of the arm and take a long rest to regain (dual wielding sickles as well because fun flavour). And I will carry a lot less stuff and be more interested in trinkets and toys and flowers instead of gold and stuff. I will also be a druid, spore circle! I look forward to playing it, but at the same time i don't want my current one to die..... i need another group. xD Oh, and to allow travel we found a solution for that on the Forgotten Realms wiki! "Acorn of far travel: If a dryad spellcaster cast this spell on an acorn harvested from her bonded oak tree, she was considered to be in contact with her tree at all times, regardless of the actual distance between them. Thus she became able to travel great distances without growing sick.[10] " [10 = James Jacobs (2015-05-22). Spells of the Woodlands: Cathedral of Leaves. Far Corners of the World. 13:40. This would be a great adventure hook. A powerful dryad that needs to be moved out of her tree because it is old and dying. Or the party makes friends with a dryad that maybe doesn't know this is possible and is prepared to die with her tree and the party can find this out later and come back and save her. Making a lifelong Ally in the process.

I feel like there should be a Pygmalion story where a young man reads about dryads and wants one but instead go looking into the forest, he plants an acorn, care for it, speak to it, sing to it, confess his love to it everyday etc. And after waiting for so long, a dryad emerges from the tree and confess her love to him too.

One thing not mentioned here is that Dryads can get around the limitation of their tarel, as well as stave of glirlgimer, by creating an acorn of far travel using an acorn taken from their own tree (archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/fw/20040710a). I actually have a player who's playing a Dryad adventurer, and an acorn of far travel is how she is able to go out adventuring. Granted, the spell doesn't currently exist in 5e, but it's still a nifty piece of lore nonetheless.

I remember meeting one when I first began, she was using fireflys as wears during the night while we had to camp. Out of respect to our druid member, we distanced the campfire from her while she told us her many stories of travelers pasts that once needed her to guide them out of the woods in the night using the very fireflies. Turns out it was our druids very own mother who enjoyed our fellowship.

Idea for a player character Dryad. The main problem is the bound tree, an adventure isn’t much of an adventure if confined in a 1000 ft area. But, have you ever heard of Tree Tokens. It’s a token (usually a feather) that once thrown on the ground makes a oak tree that’s 60 feet tall and has a 5-foot-diameter trunk, and its branches at the top spread out in a 20-foot radius. Idea for backstory is Dryad falls in love with powerful Wizard (he realizes he was charmed, but fell for her anyway) . Has daughter dryad. daughter Dryad learns of the wizards days of an adventurer and immediately falls in love with the concept and wants to go on an adventure of her own. The Wizard to try to make this a reality spends years working on a ritual to make the tree the daughter will be bound to into what’s basically a reusable tree token, can go from token, into a tree, and be magically reverted back into token with a small ritual. The Dryad now has no limit to how far she can travel, with the only side effect being every so often having to have the tree in a planted state so it can get nutrients from the ground to survive, typically can be done while she is sleeping for the night, and goes forth to become a adventurer under the guise of a ordinary Elf Druid/Wizard.

Takes a seed of the dryad tree. Plant it on a pot. Carry the pot together on your adventures. Have a Dryad Sorcerer for companion. After living your life of adventurers, you marry her. After living the test of your life, your last wish was to be burried on the side of that tree that you planted near your home. After a hundred years, adventurers find a elvish woman singing over the roots of an giant old tree that engulfed an old ruin of a cottage, in the middle of the roots there is an untouched and preserved tombstone with a carpet of flowers filling the ground.
