First time I drove an adventure bike, it was a GS1200. This was during a bike trip around Portugal with my wife, celebrating our 25th anniversary. It was a big intimidating bike the day I picked it up. Day one we were coming down a beautiful twisty mountain road, at the bottom I pulled over and got a smack off the back of my helmut. Wife claimed I flew down the mountain and that I was flying through the turns. I hadn't notice this because it was so smooth. I was instantly sold on the adventure bike and loved the GS. When we returned back home the first thing I did was sell my 2 cruisers and bought a 2017 Yamaha Tenere. 'Loved the GS and would have bought one but I love having money in my pocket to do bike trips instead.' We've had the Tenere for 5 years now and have done many trips in to the US, we have driven from the East Coast of Canada to the West Coast of the US on this bike. Wife and I have a trip coming up this summer, flying into Vegas renting a GS and riding up to Utah and exploring that state for 2 weeks. When ever I can't bring my bike (time constraints) I now rent a GS.

Great Review I had the Paris Dakar GS80 Still have my R100 R 25 years later. Fully restored now. Had a GS 1200 Then a GS 1200 Adv Now the GS 1250 Adv I tried one for a couple of days and had to upgrade. The difference is incredible. Power delivery and flexibility at all speeds are exceptional, and totally different to the previous models, even when fully loaded with boxes, bags and passenger. The bike does not argue at all. The balance is phenomenal. A buddy who rode it kept saying he couldn’t believe how light it felt. Just crossed Spain to Portugal and back, and it’s true, traffic jams don’t exist! I call it “Enduro de Carretera” - Enduro for the highway.

Trailer out to Reno, then California, north to Oregon, idaho, Montana, ND, SD, COLORADO and Wyoming. This trip changed me. I understood depend on the motorcycle, it failed to start once at 19 degrees. Once i got it out of the shed, and it warmed up to 33 started RIGHT UP.. GOT IT AT 8 miles, sold it at 44,200. Sad day. However, I have to ask a question. Why do you leave the key in the GPS lock? You will lose the key!! Keep it in your jackets breast pocket. The lock is only there to lock the GPS navigation module firmly. Only as protection against theft.

Love my GS Adventure and have been to the West coast BMW School at RawHyde. I took my brand new 2022 GSA to the school and rode it for the class instead of renting. I dropped it many times, and by drop, I mean crash. I returned from the school having ridden there and back, with a sense of accomplishment, and yes pride, but that machine just worked and albeit I’ve got a few scratches - amazing. The R1200GS has been a world-wide best seller since 2007 or a couple of years after Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman did some epic road trips with it; glad you came around it...the one item that was overlooked and makes this motorcycle truly a step ahead of the curve is the front telelever that both on and off road gives the rider the feeling of riding a very nimble 650cc.

Hey Sean, great review. One other feature of the HP version, in addition to the color scheme, is the suspension, which I believe is similar to the Adv version. A paramount but rarely mentioned performance feature of the GS1250 is its Saxon-Motodd(Telelever) front suspension. It is the principle reason it handles off road as well as it does despite its 600lb weight. I owned an early 90's R1100 S with the Telelever front suspension. Its total lack of brake-dive and bump steer along with its 120,000 miles of service before requiring any maintenance makes it stand out further than any multitunable, multi-valved, anti-dive inverted telescopic fork ever offered IMHO.

I have a 2014 F800gs, it's such an extremely capable and comfortable motorcycle. I think the older 800s are probably a bit more capable than the newer 850s. It's quite a bit lighter than both at 450lbs wet, but only makes slightly less power than the 850 at 85hp/61tq, but the 800 has a better power to weight ratio overall. With the 21 inch front wheel, it feels like a really big dirt bike in the dirt, but is still excellent on the road as well.

I own a 2012 BMW R1200R Classic. It's basically a wonderful performance hot rod. But it also has ESA Telelever Paralever wire wheels and so it's very capable off road. Not the full GS but easily negotiate a muddy track. Or cross a continent. And so while most of my riding is on the Indian at present the BMW is another dimension. An exquisite very capable motorcycle with a brilliant build quality. Great review

Great vid, I have a R1250GSA and a reservation at the BMW Off Road Center this year, really looking forward to it from your clips. I recommend a set of Dunlop Trailmax tires when the originals wear out. Does your have shift assist? If so that should make the 0-60 times much better. I love the fact I only have to use the clutch when starting and stopping and low speed conditions.

Truly great bikes and they should be for the massive price premium to purchase and to own. For the vast majority of us however (and financially wise), beyond our budgets. I enjoyed my 1150 GS very much but I enjoy my 1st Gen Super Tenere even more. Btw, those boxer engine guards do a remarkably good job at simultaneously protecting the engine and breaking ankle bones. Bought a new BMW R1200GSA in 2009 with all the bells and whistles and after five years and 76,000 miles I suffered the following: 3 final drive bearing failures; 1 final drive housing bearing; 2 sets of main stand bolts (they sheared in half); LH heated grip; N/S/R LED indicator; Front engine oil leak; Front suspension lower ball joint; 2-3 headlight bulbs per year. Loved riding it but just couldn't trust it when touring Europe and no, it was never off roaded apart from camp sites and such. Replaced it with a Honda ST1300 and also kept it for 5 years suffering the following: Err, um, nothing. That's it. Sorry BMW, love the ride but not the failures. (My local Harley dealer was also fed up with the warranty claims NTM ever increasing sales targets so ditched the brand.)

That's because BMW buys from the lowest bidder and you'll never know which parts do you have on your bike. It could be a shitty part barely to specifications and you never know. Other makers slowly evolve their bikes and you know that if the bike is over some VIN and/or after a recall, the whatever problem it had, it is solved. Not by BMW. My friend was once doing a rehaul on his engine and he tried 5 NEW pistons until they delivered ones that were to specification for ovality. Absolutely terrible. As far as I know, GS is not the best but the most overrated bike in the world.

In 1999 my dealer let me have a 1150GS for a whole afternoon for a test ride, and after a few hours on some of my favourite little roads (in the Vosges in France) I was hooked. I've had 2 1150GS's, 2 1200GS Adventures and since 2019 a 1250GS (not Adventure). I agree with everything you say about the on-road handling, the bike is very easy to ride and doesn't feel at all heavy. I'm 6ft2ins and the position is perfect for me. I'm not really an off-road rider but for a few years I had a 1200GSA in Australia and did a bit of off-roading, including the Daintree Track. For a beginner like me the bike seemed very forgiving off-road - and I only dropped it a couple of times.

Great video. Just getting into bikes! This particular model, is the one I would get for sure. I owned a few BMW cars as well over the years and really really loved them. I am wondering about BMW Bikes compared to BMW Cars: long term reliability - do stupid things break on BMW bikes (oil pan gaskets leaks, electronic failures, plastic parts related to the motor break and more)? Expensive to fix? BMW Bikes have poor resale values like BMW cars? When it came to my BMW cars I put up with these things because I had an extended warranty and really love BMW cars. They drive awesome, smell awesome, feel awesome, sounds awesome and much more.

@@Scarletsb0y truth. I moved from a 1200GS to and F850GSA. It's a fantastic bike and better off road/green lanes due to its 21" front wheel and ability to change the gearing. GS is an abbreviation of Gelande-Strasse which means On-Road /Off-Road as probably some fellows would have corrected in the comments below. Fun how many motorcycles fan or even expert would still relate the S to Sport though the GS is not a sport bike lol. Maybe because it is a BMW Motorcycle :). Hill-start control is an amazing feature, all what you need to do is to compress the front brake or rear brake after you stop on a slope and the letter H will appear on your TFT now you take your foot off the brake pedal and your hand off the front brake lever , and the bike won't slide and inch backwards nor downwards. Very handy when I am on my driveway reaching for the garage door or need both hands or both feet . It took me sometimes to get used to it , as I didn't trust that the bike would not roll lol. Anyhow , great video !!

I did have to complain a few times to my dealer that would not recognize this problem. But curiously, a few days after a regular maintenance service done at the dealer, I noticed the calipers were now Brembo's....They changed them, from a factory's order without even telling me. Cool thing: It was free of charge.
