Robert Jordan’s shyness with regards to sexual content should be preserved to contrast other shows like GOT. A hot scene can be exciting but hbo uses it as a crutch, and WoT doesn’t NEED a crutch. There’s no shortage of sexual content freely available elsewhere on the internet. And at least from the two rivers perspective, I find the sexual morality to be charming and part of what makes them who they are.... innocent and pure.

I am unaware of if you have read Brandon Sanderson's 'Stormlight Archive' however if you haven't I suggest you give it a read. The glove hand demonstrates how weird I find Christian Purity Culture. I personally hate GoT both the books and the show because contrary to popular opinion they were poorly done stories with little meat on the bone. As has been stated elsewhere WoT has *lots* of sex blood and violence in it. If they are expecting a tame show that is not going to happen. The only thing I care about is how good the art is. Something you didn't mention isn't so much a plot change but an adaptation challenge: Battles (of any sort). The book has a very Naruto-ish approach to Duels (weapons or the One Power), Battles, Politicking, and so on. A quick example is the Nynaeve/Moghedien duel, with slicing at weaves with shields and so on. A lot of the One Power duels involve shielding and that is going to be hard to show in a battle. Sword fights involve matching Cat-sits-on-the-keyboard against Dog-knocks-over-the-trash and showing that sort of thing without it just being generic fencing is going to be hard. Politics will be easier since there will be more dialogue, though a key part of the book is that nobody trusts anybody and so a lot of the planning happens inside people's heads, but to show that on-screen you'd need to introduce some kind of confidants. A big part of the Rand conflict is that he basically doesn't confide in ANYBODY and I think that would be diluted if he had just this one trusted friend so that the viewer knew what was going on, but that then makes him seem more sane to others, unless you make the pair of them look insane to everybody else. Some of the battles are going to be hard to appreciate without just putting unit squares on a map documentary-style - they were bad enough in print sometimes. Another challenge is that many One Power situations depend on the fact that its use can be more or less visible depending on the characters involved. A non-channeler can't detect weaves at all and so they just see effects without causes. A channeler can see everything going on if they're the same gender as the person channeling, and can see people embracing the source, and can even tell at close range if somebody is a channeler at all (usually). Males can get some sense of female channeling, less specifically. Either gender can potentially interact with weaves of the other and sense something is going on indirectly, sometimes. That is going to be a real challenge to adapt to film, because if you just show everything all the time then you'll have to constantly remind people that not everybody can see what is going on, or remove that plot element entirely (which IMO would de-mystify channelers somewhat which ruins their tense relationship with normal people). Another solution might be to use the POV approach of the book but that isn't very typical in shows (I think), and now the visuals seem inconsistent to a viewer unless you can remind them. Another challenge will be the sheer amount of humor in the narration. You could move it into dialogue, but you get some levity when women in a staring contest are described as trying to "out Aes Sedai each other."

Just want to throw up a couple of counter points to some of your proposed changes: Merging Gawyn and Galad. Doing this would then set up Galad to be the intended First Prince of the Sword, and given Galad's unbending nature, such a responsibility would have prevented him from ever seeking out and joining up with the Children of the Light, thus removing him from most of his interactions to the west, and his eventual connection to Berelain when the Children and Perrin's followers meet up. Reducing the Forsaken. You say reducing this would prevent the villain of the season feeling, however it would replace it with the undying villain that you defeat in one season and they show up again in another. This turns it into more of a comic book feel, rather than epic fantasy. This all just goes to further the point that Jordan constructed a very detailed, and complicated story with an intricate 'weave' if you will. Pulling on a thread to remove it from the pattern, or tying multiple threads together, results in something that looks completely different from what was originally intended. I totally get what you say about adaptations requiring changes, but hopefully those changes can be minimal, and more focused on the different way of presenting the same content through a different medium. Condensation of story lines is one thing. Elimination or alteration is something else.
@StarryEyed05905 жыл бұрын
But you could just remove the entire concept of First Prince of the Sword, since (besides Gawyn feeling a little guilt over it) it doesn't actually affect Gawyn or Elayne at all once the situation actually comes up.
@HikingPhalkawn5 жыл бұрын
@@StarryEyed0590 Plot-wise, no it doesn't. But establishing the world building aspect of the nature of Andor, and the matriarchal ruling model with the supportive, but subservient male figure, it does, and removing that changes part of the landscape against which the plot unfolds. It comes down to how much of the richness that Jordan provided us with is it OK to remove, and how watered down is the result. At what point does it no longer even have the flavor of the fantastic feast that was laid before us, and instead we are left with chain restaurant regular fare.
@StarryEyed05905 жыл бұрын
@@HikingPhalkawn I get your point, but 1) Taking out Gawyn and the First Prince of the Sword concept doesn't change that Andor is a matriarchy or that other male authority figures (like Gareth Byrne) are subservient to the the queen, so it doesn't significantly change Andoran culture. 2) Matriarchies with supporting male figures are ALL OVER WoT, so it's not like tweaking Andor reduces representation or diminishes a unique culture. 3) The whole "First Prince of the Sword" thing feels very inconsistent anyway, because Gareth was technically Morgase's FPotS, but that doesn't stop him getting fired and sent away (granted, Gareth, being incredibly honorable, doesn't retaliate against Morgase the way most men would), and then Gawyn never goes to Elayne at any point whether while she's battling for succession or after she's the acknowledged queen and Elayne never seems bothered by this.

@@StarryEyed0590 I disagree that Elayne isn't bothered by it, she very much wants Gawyn to come home and take control of her army because 1) That is literally what his entire education was for, it's good intended roll in life 2) Birgitte is really overextended dealing with the Palace Guards and being her Warder and managing the army on top of everything else, plus she's never really had a position of command and even though she's qualified enough it's supposed to be a temporary job for her

@Goku71445 жыл бұрын
I agree on quite a few of those points. They need to rewrite Elayne's love story entirely too. This show will not be taken seriously if 2 characters see each other once, then the girl is maddly in love with the guy. They then spend a few days together and they are bound forever. There really needs to be more buildup and more time dedicated to them loving each other for it to feel natural. Not sure I agree on Chara. That was one of the coolest twists at the end to me and could make for some really good content. With the cutting down on Forsaken, if you keep Demandred you have to give him a job. He was incredibly interesting to me while reading because I was always wondering "What is he doing?" The new viewers may get the same feeling, we only have 7 or so and we know what 6 are doing, what is that last guy doing? And if the writers throw in some "Throw-away" lines throughout the show about "Hmm, somethings going on in Chara." and "Chara is incredibly strong. They just got some new leader too." Heavy spoilers but they should edit the final battle entirely and change Trollics. The side of the light felt way underpowered. I don't like Trollics as enemies in the later half of the series because they went from beasts that could fell even blademasters when there was enough, because of their sheer size and strength, to throw-away baddies who could be killed by basically anyone with any weapon. It's going to look stupid if people 5'7 (I assume the average height in pre-industrial world RandLand) are fighting enemies 10 feet tall. Like what? Their reach would decimate your lines in a second and people will just laugh at it. Back to the final battle. Give Demandred a full fight. I don't know how, but maybe get Rand there to fight him before going off to fight the dark one. Demandred is the most powerful of the forsaken by that point, with his armies, An'Greal, and everything, and it felt like Robert Jordan made him too strong to beat so he uhh got arrogant and let Lan kill him? Cool moment, but will feel like a huge let-down on screen as we see this dude eviscerate the battlefield then die 1 on 1. Also, too many dark side enemies, it will feel stupid seeing the light outnumbered 3 to 1 AT LEAST and still be doing okay, even with Mat's amazing tactics. Also yeah, get rid of Gawin. He's a terrible, unlikable, character and Galad fills his role and is 10000x more interesting. The leadup to him being so righteous that he's "evil" to him just turning out to be an okay guy with too good a moral compass was interesting. I may even say up him to main cast level and really dive into his now changing world-view as he deals with the world not being as black/white as he thought it was. I can probably think up more but this is what I got for now.

I always thought Gawyn and Galad were both very different in Sanderson's three books than how they were presented in the first 11, almost inverted in their roles in some ways. Gawyn goes from making the wrong decisions for very understandable reasons to just plain making inane decisions, while Galad goes from an almost sociopathic rules-oriented person who cares for nobody's feelings except the girl he wants to have sex with to a responsible, mature commander. (I know, not everyone agrees with these assessments...YT is probably not the place to have that discussion and it's already been had repeatedly on Discord.) I like the idea of merging them into one person, though! You can then get rid of some of their stupider traits that serve no real purpose in the story and at the same time, fix what I see as the different visions of the characters in the last three books compared to the rest of the series. The one possible problem with that might be events that require Galadwyn to be in two places at once.

An unknown, armed stranger just broke into the Palace grounds and somehow managed to sway your brother and sister. Is calling the guards on such a suspicious individual really sociopathic? Aviendha is fine on her own, but gets dragged down to Elayne's level when they are together (which is most of her later plotlines), but she really doesn't have much chemistry with Rand. (It's downright awkward when she reunites with him towards the end when he's been in an actual functional relationship with Min for months). I'd personally just like to see the romances with Elayne and Aviendha treated as short-lived relationships that happened, and then ended.

As someone why just got to "Fires of Heaven" in my first read through, one change I would make is the inner party bickering. Most of the time it ends up being "silly men, they dont know what they're doing" or "we cant let the girls be doing this, they dont know the consequences" and both sides end up acting as wool headed as the other side. Some makes sense, such as Tohm(spelling? I have mixed feelings. Some of this might not hurt at the start just to allow some character growth. I was really annoyed plodding through all of that in the book, but on the other hand I think writers tend to under-do character flaws, especially with female characters, which can make them one-dimensional. If there is a smarter way to go about it, though, I'm all for it. And you could certainly lighten it up. And the whole Rand trope with the let-me-abandon-my-friends-to-protect-them thing just gets so tired. Maybe if they did it once, well, and he learned from it that might be something.

On the Shadans. While I understand, and even *kind* of agree with, your reasoning for wanting to get rid of them... They're sort of *needed* for plot reasoning... Hell, in truth the plot actually needs MORE of them. Like a LOT more of them. What I mean is, the Shadow... is out numbered. Hopelessly so. Sure, it has it's endless army of Trollocs, which is all fine and good, but... Without channelers, it doesn't matter. They're all just more meat to go into the grinder. One *single* clan of Aiel had over four hundred channelers. Even IF that "just so happened" to be the most any one clan ended up having, all the clans together should have well over *four thousand* channelers... And that is JUST the Aiel. Put simply... Even if the Shadow found *three* Callandor level sa'angreal, there just aren't enough channeling Darkfriends to put up a real fight Vs the forces of the Light... Like it isn't even close. Thus, the Shadow had to call in backup... Only, BS really messed the numbers up in AMoL, and caused seemingly over half the forces of the Light to vanish into thin air. Apparently not even bothering to show up for the Last Battle itself. The Sea Folk and the Aiel in particular practically sent nothing but a token force of channelers to the Last Battle. Also, as the Last Battle is largely about the world choosing whether or not to end the Wheel, the Shadans also serve the role of non-Darkfiends that are fighting to end it.
@SirZeu5 жыл бұрын
i think you underestimate the strength in power the forsaken have. they are not only miles ahead of the basic channeler. they are on a whole different planet. its easy to get it wrong because in the book the channeler we follow are pretty much the strongest channelers the world has seen in centuries and even them could not face a forsaken without trickery or insanely powerful angrial.
@Dunstan95 жыл бұрын
@@SirZeu A lot better trained, sure... But we're talking about them going up against *literally* hundreds of full circles, AND a Callandor level sa'angreal. To say nothing of all the other stuff. Hell, we're not even talking about "them". Rather we're talking about "him" for the most part, with a few others beating around the edges. The Shadow is... Simply out gunned in that fight. The greater skill might make the Light bleed a little, but the Forsaken would still juts end up getting crushed by the difference in numbers. It is Sharans that are there to make up the difference, but like I said, BS just got the numbers screwed up.

Now... I love Gawyn. As a character I find him fascinating because he's essentially the guy who, though he is a morally good person, he constantly ends up on the wrong side of a given situation. On top of that I just like a good tragedy, and Gawyn's story is tragic in my eyes. That being said, I don't think that's the kind of character that TV watchers are interested in seeing. Removing him would also allow the writers to play up Egwene's difficulties with interpersonal relationships, which is a cool bit of irony given that her father is an innkeeper, arguably one of the most interactive careers out there. And on the topic of the Forsaken and a "villain per season" feel. *SPOILERS* Each of the first 5 books and book 7 ends with Rand taking out at least one of the Forsaken. I noticed this pattern pretty early in my first read through, and found myself actively considering "Oh, I wonder which Forsaken is going to get taken out in this book?". Because of this, I think it would actually be more faithful to the books for the first couple of seasons to have a main villain each i.e. Ba'alzamon for S1, Be'lal for S2, Asmodean for S3. The way you could cut down on the role of the Forsaken is to filter all of their machinations through these main villains.
@9252635 жыл бұрын
Switch Lanfear to season 2's villain, but have Bel'al appear, too. Asmodean is too ineffectual to be the main villain, but his fight against Rand can be the mid-season finale, with Graendal + Sammael taking over after that.
@Mad_Mulligan3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, rather than cutting the Forsaken down, I feel like they should be played up more. For me, having the Forsaken out there, doing their own thing, making their own alliances and betrayals among themselves, really helped differentiate the Dark One's forces from Sauron's in the Lord of the Rings. But that's just my hot take.

the problem with the sharans is that from a show point of view they come out of no-where. at no point in the story do they go to shara. they talk about rumors and until the end the most we know about them is that they trade silk on the coast. having this huge battle planned with then they just show up pretty much makes its reverse ghost from return of the king. they come out of no-where and are 10x more powerful they the light channeler. they instead should just be darkfriend from the blight
@waltgrisly5095 жыл бұрын
@@SirZeu There is a reason why they dont go to shara - nobody ever came back from there so they stopped trying a long time ago. Seanchans appeared the same way, but since it was earlier in the story (and they didnt lose immediately) we got to know them. I think it can be justified, but creators are afraid that viewers are too stupid to understand that in a world like this, you dont have information about everything going on. We basically dont know what is going on in the blight (except that there is "bad guy army") and nobody complains. Why would it be so hard to accept that there is this nation that sides with the dark because of demandred´s trickery ?
@StarryEyed05905 жыл бұрын
@@waltgrisly509 We don't complain about the Blight because the vague idea we have (wasteland where the bad guy army hangs out) turns out to jive with all the specifics we are ever shown. With Shara, there's only a few mentions of it ever, with no Sharan characters and no foreshadowing at all that a Forsaken is involved there, before all of the sudden they show up as a last minute army. With a series as huge and convoluted as WoT, it's more than possible to not even be aware there is such a place as Shara when the reveal happens. It's not that we didn't expect that distant places might have stuff going on that we don't know about. It's that an important plot element (especially one that happens halfway through the LAST book in a 14/15 book series) would have previously been set-up in some way and not come out of completely nowhere. It's a writing problem, not a world-building problem, but it IS a problem. There should either be better foreshadowing (so the viewer goes "Oh crap, I forgot all about those guys!" instead of going "Wait... what???") or they should be removed. Personally, I'm partial to reviving the "Taim was Demandred the whole time" theory.
@princess20-sideddie955 жыл бұрын
@@StarryEyed0590 I feel like that could be a fairly easy fix. Instead of the Sharans always being closed to outsiders, have them say that they've just recently shut people out, trade deals are going unmet, etc. It provides good reason for the rumours, a good indication that something is going on there, something that just so happened to start at the same time as everything else around the dragon reborn, and yet still keeps them off-screen and out of the plot until they suddenly aren't. Maybe even have some cryptic messages from them like the reason why they've shut everyone out is to "better serve the Dragon" which we would hear about after the world knows Rand is the dragon. So we think they're referring to Rand, but it also make no sense, since serving Rand would not mean closing themselves off. Especially if we also, closer to the end, find out Rand has sent an envoy and that envoy got killed trying to enter Shara. All this sets up the ending without fundamentally changing anything from the books.
@StarryEyed05905 жыл бұрын

As Daniel states, there's no cannon examples of homophobic attitudes being held in-world beyond one Aes Sedai disapproving of Elaida and Meidani hooking up; and even that could be for any number of reasons. GoT got this really right. There's characters that are straight (most of them), there's some that are LGBT, and there's both sympathetic AND asshole characters in both groups. None of them are reduced to who they sleep with.

What we absolutely cannot risk, is this series becoming the flagship project for "Woke fantasy". You'll notice that every one of the comments about increasing the role of the LGBTQ community in the series is followed up how beneficial it will be for the LGBTQ community. The rationale is never that it will make the story better. I don't think the adaptation should shy away from anything Jordan hinted at or alluded to. However, I don't think the WoT should just be a vehicle for activism but it seems more and more likely it will be that way. I don't know why people insist on changing established stories just for activism's sake. Why can't we just have the Wheel of Time as it is written? I can feel that the LGBTQ community is underrepresented and also feel that any political activism attached to WoT will shift the focus of the story to something different.

She could be a character on her own, independent of Rand. Her Andoran Throne storyline is a series of blunders and can be completely skipped. Instead she can be Pevara’s counterpoint in Salidar faction with the two women ultimately joining forces to help the Black Tower. Besides Brigette she can have a BT warder ... Wherever I look on the internet, people are begging Rafe not to turn The Wheel of Time into another Shannara or Seeker. What made these shows bad, besides the acting? The very fact that the writers changed the story. Therefore, it drives me nuts to see people clamoring to cut Faile, the Shaido, The Forsaken, or even Shara. Some people are desperate to see the sexual orientation or gender changed of the characters. (Before you freak out, I am not saying that homosexuality is bad, or having a transgender is bad.) What I am trying to say, is that every change the writers make is like throwing a rock into a pond. The bigger the rock, the bigger the ripples that spread through the story changing the story until all we are left with is another Shannara or Seeker that gets canceled quickly. Have we already forgotten the message of the last battle between Rand and the Dark One? Rand and the Dark One spend time changing to the story to fit their own image over and over countering each other’s changes. Rand doesn’t win until he realizes that each time the Dark One changes things the story is pulled in the direction that few want, and destroys the story that is being told. Like-wise, when Rand is changing the story, he realizes that he is pulling the story away from the story that people have come to love. Rand finally realizes that he has to leave the story alone in order to win. Every time that one of us wants to change the story to fit our “better” version of the story, we are assaulting someone else’s story with Balfire, burning threads from the pattern. Rafe and his team have a very tough job translating the book to tv form. Each change, each cut, each thing they add will alter the story in some way, and their job is to make sure that the ripples from that change are minimal. For example, turning Lan into a woman could be very interesting, just make Nynaeve a lesbian and we are fine right? However, having Lan be a woman will take away from the interesting side affects realized later in the book when the first female warder is bonded. If Moraine has a female warder, all the pitfalls will be known and it would change some very fun plots later on. That would be some unintentional big ripples. Now what about removing Aram? If we take Aram out of every scene he is in, there will be very little change to the story at all, until after his death. Aram’s impact is shown through Perrin’s thought process when he is forging his hammer. With each blow of the hammer, Perrin pulls together the threads of his life and those around him to finally become the leader he is meant to be. The problem is, how do you convey Perrin’s thought process during this iconic scene? This is a challenge that Rafe is going to have to face, should he cut that scene, change it? Frankly, if it were me making the decision, I would start the scene with Perrin being in the wolf dream and making a dream Hopper to talk to. Then, while Perrin is explaining what happened, he can pull his thoughts together with Hopper as a sounding board. We can then watch Perrin forge the hammer. Right before Perrin names the hammer, he can have a heartfelt good by with his dream Hopper, and then cut back to the naming of the hammer. This would allow the audience to see and hear Perrin’s transformation and say good bye to a friend. I think it would be an even more emotional scene than it is in the books. This would also make Aram’s presence throughout the TV series more meaningful. Rafe has the weight of the pattern on his shoulders, and should he change the story too much, he could very well destroy the story for millions of people. Oh well, here is a pat on the head, and go back to your own little world, and just enjoy the books you love for the tv series is not for you. In my opinion the less the before mentioned is said, the better. The only way to avoid it would be to make sure that you think very carefully on what is cut, changed, and added.

The white tower conflict IS the WOT! Villains are defeated, hero's are born and dragons are slain both literally and metaphorically in every story its why we love fantasy....but the reason RJ wrote this series is to EXPLORE a relatively realistic or at least fresh take on how pro/antagonists come across their new found power or lack of power. The conflict between tradition, law, morality and realistic results is the allure of this series. Kingdoms fall because of pride and living legends are struck frozen with fear not because of shadow spawn but because of the expectations they may never live up to. I hated Ingtar until I didint. I hated Mazrim until I didnt. That internal conflict and shift in perspective is concentrated and personified in the white tower conflict. IMHO I dont want the Ogier to look like giant gnomes with furry elf ears Id rather them be a little more beast like especially since normies apparently always confuse them for Trollocs. Certain combos need to be done flawlessly, the relationship of Min and Perrin for example is one of my favorites in fact I hated that Perrin wasnt the MC in the first 3 books and then from 4-7 i wished Mat was. I kinda maybe absolutely without a doubt hated the eye of the world portion in the beginning but if the budget is what im hoping it is it could be better on screen.

By the way, Rand's relationship with his three women is not polygamy because they are NOT MARRIED. They relationships are polyamorous, which everyone seems okay with. Also, are they going to do away with actual polygamy among the Aiel? After, Rand is half Aiel, and he does try to understand and adapt Aiel customs to some extent, so just make him embrace more of his Aiel heritage and leave the whole love triangle alone. Or if they have to, let Aviendha have another romantic relationship to try and forget her feelings for Rand. The neat thing about Rand loving all three of the women is that they are each SO different from each other.

The show should play out just like the books, flaws and all. Imo I feel what your saying, and even wanna agree with you. But I wanna see the world I know, come to life not a portal stone version of it.

You know, I don't think I have any ideas for changes other than if they DO change things it is still recognizable BUT I realized something. Adapting the first three or four books is fairly easy but everything really ramps up after that. After the Dragon is established and the other super boys and girls are well on their way it ALL BLOWS UP and they are all over the place. As in lots of interesting things happen and out main and side and foe characters are everywhere across Randland. ;-) I SO hope it goes well and that the series is consistent over all x season and no cancellations please... :-D

Two of the subplots that can be cut and will have minimal effect on the story: first, the whole Rodel Iturdale campaign in Saldea. Though two great scenes will be cut: the leader of Maradon being exposed as secret darkfriend, and when the Saldeans saved Rodel from being overrun again by forces of the dark. Second, will be the side adventure that Rand, Hurin, and Loial go with Selene through the Portal stones. The world they visited was interesting but if cut I don't see much effect on the overall story.
@lisascankdealejo64475 жыл бұрын
The only real difference that would make would Rand meeting Lanfear (Selene) and learning about the portal stones and how they work. I suppose he could just learn about them from a book in Tear though. I really liked Hurin though and that time sort of forced Rand's initial step-up as a leader similar to Perrin's side quest in the Two Rivers did for him. Ugh I'm conflicted

No! That scene where the Sharans show up during the last battle is one of my favorite scenes in the entire series :( Other than that, I agree with everything you said. I could see why they would cut Gawyn, though it would break my heart. In my opinion he’s the most realistic and relatable character in the entire series. (Because he’s such a fuckup).

I still don't think that cutting the number of Forsaken is the way to go. Some of them exist for just a few scenes, but the number of them adds to the sense of dread. Which ones do you cut? All of the female Forsaken are crucial to the story. And you can't very well combine any of them. So is it the five women plus Ishamael and Asmodean? Combine Galad and Gawyn? How about just cut Gawyn, or have him killed early in the story. I agree that Egwene doesn't need a love interest. And yeah, I don't care about the Ogier. They can go. But I feel about the Forsaken the way you feel about the Ogier. So if you get to keep your Ogier, I get to keep my Forsaken. Deal?
@mafxarr87765 жыл бұрын
Siansonea Orande Dashiva can definitely be cut. I forgot if he was Osangar or Arangar pre-resurrection , probably Osangar. Never cared for the Ogier, but I want to see the Ways. I guess it could still be incorporated in some way, perhaps using records left behind by the now-extinct race of Ogiers

The show is going to be woke, I just hope it's not to drastic degrees - which judging from your comments what we consider drastic will be quite different. Personally I feel more than like half the entire book being from a female perspective is great in and of itself. Having some stuff here and there is fine, but it shouldn't detract from the overall themes and stories of light vs shadow. The other thing. They need to keep the strict differences between women and men regarding the power. Women and men are DIFFERENT. Saidin and Saidar are DIFFERENT. I just finished listening to the Eye of the World audiobook for the first time and was pleasantly surprised to hear a interview from Robert Jordan at the end of it. There, he stressed the difference he wanted to convey. He said something along the lines of a woman teaching a man about Saidin would be like a goldfish teaching a bird how to fly. It adds so much mystery and captivation with the magic to the show, and also actually helps representation. People pay much more attention to the women for the first part of the series (and probably show) simply because 95% of the channeling going on is from the female perspective. We get Saidin from Rand's perspective, true - but it still makes for a great moment (and accounts for like 75% of the shock...btw) when the Ashaman finally do their thing at Dumai's Wells. Some might call those differences in the book sexist, especially in some ways they are described. If these differences are smoothed over in any strong way - I'm out. It's such an important part of the story, a source for so much conflict, and stressed even in the books that the most beautiful and powerful things made with the One Power were from the female source and the male source coming together. The effect can't have the same meaning if both sides of the Yin Yang are gray.

Gilbert Davis I believe he is just giving his opinion of what Will be cut. 14 books & a prequel. No way is everything that is in the books, will end up on the small screen. No need to be rude.
@kll909225 жыл бұрын
Gilbert Davis that is a childish attitude. First the books are not perfect and have some really sloe moments ( like hundreds of pages) . Also he is talking about the adaptation. You cant put everything from the books on tv the same way because it doesnt work like that. If they make entire episodes where the cahracters run and run again for 3 hours people will get bored . And if there a season is not successful , the series is over. So they need to make changes and i am really happy that some youtubers and big fans of the series like Daniel try to give some advice.

If there is no Gawyn, would Galad be Elayne's natural brother instead of half brother and be her Prince of the Sword? And HE be Egwene's warder then? I would be quite happy if he didn't join the Whitecloaks. I don't see any reason Egwene needs to have a romance at all. She's too busy being Amyrllin. I don't know how I feel about reducing the number of Forsaken. How about just not reincarnating them once they are killed? I'd be happy with that. Four of them are taken out in the first 3 books; that brings it down to 9 already. I totally disagree that a romantic relationship between Elayne and Aviendha is hinted at. It's easy to see stuff like that if you're looking for it, but they become FIRST SISTERS. That would then be like incest, which is worse by far than polygamy. LGBTQ representation is one thing, but the way everyone is talking about it, I'm really beginning to feel like it's going to all up in our faces, which I think hurts, not helps the show. YES! Condense the slog! But I would not like to see less of Perrin. Surely there is something else he can do. And by all means, don't make him seem so whipped by Faile!! Also, he seems to retain more feelings of friendship toward Rand than Mat does, and feels empathy toward him because he knows what it's like to suddenly be different and for people to dislike and be scared of him because of it. I would like to see that brought out more.

If they make any of the main characters LGBTQ I think I would be turned away.

I completely agree! Including it as a genuine part of the story makes sense, but changing a character completely just to have more diversity ruins so many stories and is completely unnecessary. Removing Sharra/Demandred seems the wrong way to go to me, I would actually think the show is a good place to play that *up*. I'm only on FoH, so I don't know how important the forsaken will be going forward, but I think that of the ones I've seen so far, it can be reduced to Ishamael, Lanfear, Asmodean, and Moghedian. They already cut the two from the end of EoTW, which is good, and I think we could do without Be'lal as well. He just doesn't have the same presence as Moghedian and he could easily be replaced with Ishamael or the Black Ajah in TDR

Completely agree about The Slog and especially the ending of Memory of Light. If the number of Forsaken is cut (yes!) it should be mentioned that there used to be 13 (gotta keep that number), but others died in the past, or something like that. I would also change some names (blasphemy!!); the names of several female characters sound unnecessarily similar (e.g., Es & Ms). Keep the World of Dreams! I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I would cut down the entire length of the story by about a third. Jordan needed a much more aggressive editor, and the show will be a more thrilling ride if not so long and detailed.

so with the Forsaken, we have a lot who could possibly fulfill each others roles. Sammael&Demandred: These two are probably the most similar Forsaken, they are both men who led a large faction of male Aes Sadai, and who's betrayal to the Shadow caused a massive upheaval in the War of Power. They also both betrayed because of their hatred for Lews Therin, and both were even convinced to join by Graendal. They even fit together perfectly with other than a few scenes in Lord of Chaos, Demandred is mostly absent till the last battle, and Sammiel is the secondary antagonist of almost the first entire half of the series, until he disappears in A Crown of Swords in a way that seems so planned that I think every fan expected him to show back up at some point. It would be super easy to combine these two characters. Personally I think naming him Sammael would be better than Demandred because of Moraine's family name being Damodred the words sound to similar, same reason Game of Thrones changed Asha Grayjoy to Yara Grayjoy in the show. Aginor & Semirhage: Here we have an evil scientist who joined the Shadow after his horrific research came to light, and an evil doctor who joined the Shadow after her evil research came to light. While their stories are actually different, this is similar enough to combine the two. Osan'gar puts a damper on this, but he ended up being a more or less ancillary character, who's only real achievement was his ironic death. I would suggest cutting Aginor and only having Balthamel in Eye of the World. Asmodan & Be'lal: This one sadly cuts a crowning moment of awesome from Moraine, but I see no point to having a Forsaken show up for what would only be one episode, only to get a face full of balefire. Maybe she makes him run from her? That would still be awesome right? Mesaana & Alvarin: Alvarin is not a Forsaken, but she is a massively important leader of the shadow, who gave them arguably the biggest victory they ever achieved. While I personally adore the Black Ajah hunters storyline, that has to be condensed or cut altogether, so two powerful evil leaders in the White Tower are completely unnecessary, and one needs to be cut.

I dont really care either way about anything you said except THE FREAKING NAME. Why there is always someone who thinks audience is a bunch of morons ? Like the Yara bullshit was even worse and more confusing than the similar names. It just destroys the immersion especially when they changed it midair. Demandred sounds cooler than Sammael and kinda subconsciously evokes the evil as it sounds like demon-dread. Damodred doesnt sound too similar (ofc except the ending) and I think the name doesnt even come up that frequently to cause issues with "not exactly bright" part of audience. Most will probably think that her name is Moiraine Sedai anyway. ( Does "khaleesi" ring a bell ? )
