His mistake on the phone is funny enough. But think about the premise for her returning his call. He says he only called her to make sure that she was out of town. So he actually called Stanley's wife to verify that at least that part of the story was true. But yes, the expression he makes when Jim finally hangs up the phone is clearly one of desperation because he knows he cannot handle having the information that he does.
