Hello to you,
Here is a checklist of what should be verified or tested before buying a hybrid. Some checks are more related to the e-tron series but can also be applied to other cars.
Other stuff to check :
Check things you would normally do for a normal car + some other things you could do if you can :
1) Ask that the battery is fully charged before you go.
2) Look that you have all the battery bars filled up on the screen
3) Check the EV range (should be between 38 and 42 KM)
4) Try to make a 5 KM trip in EV without any kind of accessory (ex : no ventilation). After those 5 real KM, check how many KM you lost in the EV range
5) Try to do that on a plane road
6) Try to go on a high speed road max at 125 KM in EV. It HAS to stay in EV
7) Try to make a full acceleration in EV to check that the needle goes to 100% power and that you don't have strange noise or behavior with the gears
8) For the combined engine power test (you have to have the fuel engine on), go onto a medium speed road (let's say limited to 80 KM/H), go to manual, engage the last gear (6), go to the end of the accelerator pedal (without touching the button at the end of the course of the pedal). If it's ok, the needle should go at the end of the boost
9) When you get back at the end of the test drive, ask if you can put yourself the car to charge. Check if the charging light goes from orange to green.
10) Verify the state of the cables and charger.
11) if you have the stationary heater, ask them to put it on (the car should not be in charge for this test). it should get hot or cold (depending on the temperature you put) after around 5-10 minutes (some ppl had problems with this feature) I have 2 other videos about this auxiliary heater.
12) Ask them for the battery capacity level. Usually they lose between 1 to 3% of capacity / year

Really nice and informative review/tips! I am highly considering to buy a 2018 version which has only been driving 19.000km so far. I’ll have to use it for a long, daily commute of 140km each way (with charging options at both ends of the commute) - do you think it’s still worth it? Or does the e tron not make sense in that case?! Thank you ✨
@jardonnour
@jardonnour 2 жыл бұрын
Hello and thank you. I think it can still be a good choice as long as, like you said, you can charge it at both ends of the commute. Also, 2018 and 19 000 km is a good deal (depending on the price of course). It's worth better of your money in city driving (full EV) but you would still have some city driving anyway i guess. So it can be good. What's it's price ? You can look at my other videos on the channel. I have made consumption tests for i think all the driving modes on the highway and maybe you can compare it to the consumption of your present car to help decide. Those are long videos but you could skip at the end to see the results.

Hybrids don't get to use their strength on a long commute. I assume it's over a longer stretch of highway? Totally not worth buying a PHEV unless you have a lot of commuting through towns and rural areas with a lot of stop and go where you can regenerate. A Diesel would be way better for the distance you are driving.

The manufacture covers the hybrid battery for 10 years or 100,000 miles if the battery does have issues for the hybrid portion of the vehicle that’s for that or if he would go especially since no extended warranty will cover the hybrid 🔋

I did not talk about the usual aspects of a used car as I am sure you can find plenty of very good video about this. The hybrid version is something else though, that s why I talked about all those specifics points to check 🤗 before buying. I don't remember all the details. The car can charge on a 10 amps socket like at home which would charge your car in less than 4 hours (2.3kW) It can be charged on a public station, but the car will stay limited at the max current of 16A, which will charge your car in 2 hours (3.7kW). So if you are on a public fast charger of max 32A, it will be limited at 16A anyway. The car has a type 2 connector. There are no fast charging mode.

I'm looking at 2017 A3 e-tron, scheduled a test drive and seriously considering it if it looks good, but charging at home is not an option yet, though I was considering public charging as there are a lot of those between work and home, do you think only public charging it would be a viable way to help maintain it as my new daily driver. Hello, it can be viable if indeed you have easy access to public stations AND that the price of electricity is still reasonable compared to home electricity. If not, the risk is that you get bored of using public charging stations or that you make less economy because of the electricity price 😅. Also need to consider the charging time as minimum is around 2 hours to fill it completely up from 0 if you have access to high power chargers 🤗. In my case I have neither but still enjoy the car verrryyyyy much. Tell me what you think of your test drive 😄

@@jardonnour I actually ended up test driving a 2016 Premium plus with the sport package and loved it. It was very fun to drive and fast especially once it hit the boost. Sounds like I might end up charging it just as much as I have to for now if I end up getting it. It gives me an excuse to get out of the house on my days off lol. I am liking it over my Rogue Sport (I think some people call it a Qashqai outside of the US) especially since it seems like fuel economy for me with a lot of city driving would be much better,I get an average of 26.5 mpg combined and do a lot of driving so the fuel costs have been adding up. I think I might go for it. The last thing I'm wondering about is maintenance, the guy at the dealership told me that maintenance will be the same as any other audi,but I'm sure there's other things I should watch out for to make sure it's running smooth for a long time like charging the battery every once in a while and things right?

@@qawsedrfyu Hello, aha great. I was sure you would like it. It definitely is something different. Yes usually same maintenance as any other petrol car. For the battery, it should not stay for too long at 0% or 100% (talking months here). Usually not that good. But yes still good to have charged at 100% from time to time to keep it in a good condition. You will still have your KM based or time based service as usual. Hey, I am considering buying an A3 e-tron, model 2016 (pre-facelift). When I drove it today at the dealer, I noticed a shirt sound (like a click) when I pushed the brakes to a full stop (usually around 10 km/h to 0), especially when I hit the brakes harder, for example at a traffic light. Is it normal for this car? Would be glad if you helped ;)
@jardonnour

Hello 👋, Hmm I still have this car and I do not think I have encountered this click when breaking. Going from regen breaking to physical braking is quite smooth and almost not noticeable. What you are describing (probably) is like when the car engages the physical brakes, this clicking noise happens. Unfortunately without the sound at my disposal, it would be hard for me be more precise. If you are ever able to record it, you could send it to me. On my side, the only noises I got are from the suspension area (with high bumps) and some plastics in the rear when the chassis is « stressed », like if you go on a bump sideway style.

I am thinking about getting an A3 E-tron, this is a great video for getting a used e tron. Hello and thank you :) For this reason I would take the facelift version. I do not know if they kind provide this kind of document or even info (usually dealers just may not care). The charge option is not really important (not a deal breaker) as it would be useful mainly on highways and it does consume a lot of fuel. The facelift just does not have the S EV mode bug that I have published. As said, still better go with facelift :)

Great video Mr.Fun Car Reviews :) I have a question regarding to the 1.4TSI engine. These engines are very easy to chip tune to higher HPs. Is there a way to tell whether the engine is tuned? I am worried about that as it will impact the reliability and longevity of the engine.

@jardonnour 2 жыл бұрын
Hello and thank you very much :) I would not know any "easy way" to check it. A professional garage in this field would be able to check it i guess, or even an Audi garage itself. But in the latter, if a change was indeed made and they discover it, it would certainly void the waranty. Now legally, if you buy a chip tuned car without knowing it, i guess you can't be held responsible for that, although how to prove you didn't do it, that is another story.
@ElGoogKO
@ElGoogKO Жыл бұрын
My guess is to go to an actual reputable tuning company that does tuning for these hybrid VAG vehicles and have them inspect it and tell you what they find. Because they know exactly what must be done how how stock looks like. Unless the potential tune you're afraid of was done by some random idiot with a laptop not knowing anything, there shouldn't be any reliability impact. The good tuner shops would actually improve both engine and DSG gearbox stats, making the car more reliable.

Hi. Thanks a lot. Have a problem with charging. During charging the red led on the charger flashes red and the charging process stops. Some times at 50% some times at 75% of the charging capacity. Any idea of the root cause? Do you know the reduce of the battery capacity in relation tot the age of the car. (my car is from 2015 and the max capacity is 32 km when max charged. Is this normal? Thks
@jardonnour
@jardonnour 3 жыл бұрын
Hello, If you achieve 100% charge and have 32KM of displayed range, this seems a bit low. I m having a second hand 2015, and it's between 39 and 42 KM. As you have charging problems, it should be good to bring it to your dealership for diagnostics. From i read there is potentially 2 problems. 1) the fact you only have 32 KM of range (due to battery degradation, faulty cells...). May be considered normal. 2) the fact that your charge can't always complete without errors. This is definitely a problem. More infos you have for them, the better. So a couple of questions : How many KM do you have on your car ? Since when you realized you have this problem ? How often do you have this problem ? Do you have an error message on the charging device ? Is it always 50% or 75% ? (or it can vary in between those numbers). Which type of socket are you using when this problem arises (10A home socket ? 16A - 32A industrial socket (like public chargers) ? both ?) Where does it happen ? at home ? on public charging stations ? What happens when you unplug and plug back the car after the error message ? does it continue the charge ? Can you sometimes charge it up to 100% without the charge being stopped ? (or there is always a problem). Are you using any power cable extensions ? On the charging device, you can configure the charging power of 50% or 100%, which one is it on your device ? Battery degradation can be around 1-3% per year. Audi is supposed to have an 8 year / 160 000 KM warranty (from what i remember) for the battery. But i don't know what level of degradation you need to invoke it. For example, they could only do some repairs under warranty if you have lost more than 15% of battery capacity, otherwise they would not go for it. They should be able to give you the battery degradation level by plugging an OBD reader i guess. Actually this can be a difficult subject. You could have a battery problem, or an electronic problem, or an electric problem. It could be in the car, in the charger, on the cables...

Hello, You do have a lot of KM but stills. I do find the level low. But I m not a battery expert. Did they say anything about your charging problems ? I think that we should not care about this situation being normal just because they said it is. They should have specific numbers under which they will have to do their repairs. For the price they are asking, it seems ok but what was the price of this car when it was new ? Will you have a warranty with them ? I didn't see people complain yet about oil leaks and exhaust problems or pure electrical problems in this specific car. Your A3 is sold by a garage ? if yes ask them for the battery capacity % as i said in the video as this car has "quite" the mileage and has already 4 years. Always need to be careful with first gen cars (especially with PHEV). On my side i have minor problems like a plastic noise in the back when the chassis is being "torn" (ex : you take a road bump slowly sideways) or suspension noise in the front with high road bumps making the car "jump". Otherwise it drives smooth. EV range is still ok after 4 years and 40 000 KM for me (around 40 KM on display). For the upkeep, my car is under free of charge (except for fluids) for 10 years or 100 000 KM (first one reached, but i have a doubt on the KM now). Usually the EV part of the car isn't of high maintenance and therefore shouldn't cost much more than a normal Audi, unless something breaks. The battery should be under warranty for 8 years or 160 000 KM, with a normal capacity loss of max 30 % being considered as normal before a replacement can happen. Now, a french viewer asked me the same question for what to look for before buying it. If you can make a road test it would be great. You are not obliged to do what i m writing down, but i would (for myself). Check things you would normally do for a normal car + some other things you could do if you can : 1) Ask that the battery is fully charged before you go. 2) Look that you have all the battery bars filled up on the screen 3) Check the EV range (should be between 38 and 42 KM) 4) Try to make a 5 KM trip in EV without any kind of accessory (ex : no ventilation). After those 5 real KM, check how many KM you lost in the EV range 5) Try to do that on a plane road 6) Try to go on a high speed road max at 125 KM in EV. It HAS to stay in EV 7) Try to make a full acceleration in EV to check that the needle goes to 100% power and that you don't have strange noise or behavior with the gears 8) For the combined engine power test (you have to have the fuel engine on), go onto a medium speed road (let's say limited to 80 KM/H), go to manual, engage the last gear (6), go to the end of the accelerator pedal (without touching the button at the end of the course of the pedal). If it's ok, the needle should go at the end of the boost 9) When you get back at the end of the test drive, ask if you can put yourself the car to charge. Usually they lose between 1 to 3% of capacity / year If you are really interested in this car, i really suggest you to watch most of my videos on this car as a very lot of information is being given. Feel free to ask me more questions. You can also check also this video : kzbin.info/www/bejne/bYCUqWdsiJirb6M

Thank ya very much. Yeah I’m going to the dealership today to test it. They have it plugged in right now for my arrival. The guy didn’t exactly know what I meant by battery ware. Idk if he’d understand if I said capacity or not. But either way, hopefully he’ll know now. Even still, I’m looking at other options. Just haven’t gotten around to going to them yet. Planning on that tomorrow. Plus the guy said yearly maintenance would be around 400$ which is double what I’m paying for my Smart right now xD

@@Shadethedragonwolf Welcome :) Welcome to the Audi world where everything is more expensive aha. Well i forgot to mention i m paying around 130$ for the service every year (mostly oil change only actually). Shouldn't your car have also free services up until a certain age / KM ? Well Battery ware / capacity should ring a bell to them. Just remind them what happens to their iPhone battery after 3 years aha. Is it an Audi garage ? As it is a 2016 model, show them this bug hehe : kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZjMd3x4abWfhKc

Heya. Yeah it was an Audi dealership. And idk about the free thing to be honest. All they told me is that the battery has an 8 year warranty, which means it would have 4 years left on it. And then the car has a 5 year/x amount of miles service thing. But not free. So any time I’d have to come in for my yearly service, they’d be charging 400$. He said it was like 850$ for 2 year service. So yeah. Then, get this, no one at the dealership knew what I was talking about with the battery capacity test. They were like “I don’t know what that is or how we do it, no ones ever asked us that before”. Even had to look this video up for the dealer to watch to understand what I was talking about. Then we did a google search on how to do it, where to find the number and such. One of the actual guys that does the inspection thought we were meaning the battery life you check on the MMI lol. But either way, they did charge it up until I got their. They kept saying that the max charge is 16 miles. Got in it and it was at 20. Took on a test drive. I guesstimate maybe a 5-8 mile trip. Battery went from 20 mpge to 6 mpge by the time we got back to the dealership. Soooo that felt like a red flag there. Air and center display screen turned off for that trip as well. The dealers excuse for the battery drop was “due to amount of weight in the car and how I drove the car out of the “efficiency zone”. Which was literally just past the bar on the little division tick. Otherwise to get to up to speed was a crawl. But yeah. Decided against getting the A3. Meh lol.

@@Shadethedragonwolf I think that they can check the battery capacity or ware through the OBD port (otherwise how can they check that your battery needs to get replaced because it dropped too low ?). This car is great if you can charge it every night. You can achieve quite good overall MPG. I guess that when you said 20 mpge to 6 mpge you meant EV range ? But this car is not really efficient (form y taste) in city driving if you are not in EV mode. But it's great on the highway in hybrid auto mode, now there it's efficient. I guess you checked my videi with POV driving. If people only look at the EV range of this car (or similar cars) they might get disappointed anyway because 20 miles is low. Someone once said (rightfully in my opinion) that those PHEV cars are made for overall better fuel efficiency. But if you can easily charge it from home or at work that's already making a difference. On my side, i love the car but will give it back at the end of the year.

Can I ask a dumb question, if I get an A3 e-tron but never plug charge it, will it be okay to drive it like a prius?
@jardonnour
@jardonnour 4 жыл бұрын
Hello, Well technically you could, but i m not sure it would be good for the batteries. They need to be charged / depleted from time to times. The A3 e-tron does not work like a Toyota in terms of how it charges itself and how it handles the switching between the EV and ICE, while running. You'll not be as efficient as you could and it would be an expensive hybrid where you can't bring the most of it. It will not be worth it for your wallet ;) PHEV needs to be charged for better battery life and to "get your money back". You'll also not benefit from the 204 HP as for that you need to have a certain amount of battery. I hope this will be informative for you ;)
