This channel is so much more helpful than practically any other channel aimed at writers. With all due respect to those channels, hearing people complain about the proper use of adjectives for the 1000th time gets old after a while, but learning about the ins and outs of the business is invaluable and I have yet to find anybody else (besides maybe Brandon Sanderson) who is able to communicate that information so succinctly.

In oil painting, we call it "overworked," and I think a book can be revised to the point where it is overworked, and it needs to be rewritten. Sometimes you can get so much feedback that your book starts to sound like it's been written by committee. I've rewritten large swaths of my books at times, because the only way to get that voice back is to start over. Maybe the narrative stays exactly the same, but it gets restated.

As a plebeian, I'm so grateful for the insider knowledge you have shared for free. I would have never known that r&r term, although the idea is understandable. I also like that you don't think it is always necessary, but something to discuss. I really relate to you guys, not just because I have chickens. . . Another subject, when is it a good time to submit to agents. I noticed that many of your group are not taking submissions. Thanks!

Thank you for the thoughtful, honest opinions. I'd always heard that R and R's are like a foot in the door, that your book's almost there, it just needs some work. I see now it's much more complicated than that. I think the biggest take away for me is keeping in mind you want the agent or editor's advice to gel with your vision of the work, so that the relationship and book is a good fit. Thank you!

Hi BookEnds! This is a wonderfully well-timed video. A writer friend recently got “the call” that ended up being a discussion about an R & R, but no offer. I understand BookEnds agents can only speak for themselves, but is this practice something writers should be aware of? Before this, we assumed “the call” universally indicated an offer, so the R & R was a bit of a shock here. Thank you for your time!

Just got an R&R call today. The agent sees the promise in the book but there's a 3rd act plot element that didn't work for her. She has excellent suggestions and our conversation gave me the impression that we would work very well together. This video gives me some clarification. I knew my book was missing something. Other agents who rejected it couldn't point me in any direction but this agent had the editorial knowledge to help me figure out exactly what was wrong. Your talk on the vision really made it clear what I should do. Hopefully my revision can get me an offer.

Years ago, I had what amounts to an R&R with an editor I hired. And the idea was, do this and you'll probably make this book successful. Long story, short--it didn't work. Mainly because I didn't ask myself if her big changes jibed with my vision (as you guys wisely point out). Looking back, they SO didn't. Which led to a version I ended up hating of my first book, and the eventual shelving of it. "The vision thing," (to use GHW Bush's phrase) is a very important element of each writer's journey, and I'm glad you're giving it the rightful emphasis. You guys are fun to watch, but you're building a really useful reference library, as well. Thank you.

I got an RnR from a publishinig company so this video really hit the spot for me. I havn't been published before. Well, I published a short story in an anthology but didn't make any money from it. Then the publishing company got some money issues (during corona). So I found out they can't afford to publish any new writers right now. I'm still revising(it's more like a rewrite of the whole thing) but there's absolutely no guarantee I will get this book pubished. So, yah, it feels pretty tough right now...

Excellent points! I met an agent at Thriller Fest who wanted me to turn my codeine-addicted car thief into an El Mariachi knock off. A complete disconnect of vision.

My last MS got a bunch of requests and most ended in R&Rs on a factor I didn't want to change, so... bleh. To clarify: I'm very open to change. This was a change that would have caused controversy one way or another with readers and I wasn't interested in that

I got an R&R last year. I panic and did the agent's suggest quickly. I think it backfired. Good news I got a nice rejection out of it. :) So my question is, is there a time limit to complete the R&R? Resubitting too soon ( like a week)?

QUESTION: How often are R and Rs accepted? I'm on round three of revisions but haven't been signed on yet.

As usual, wonderful video. Question: How to "build up" a novel if it comes in too short without just sticking in words? I am a screenwriter writing my first novel and it is difficult for me to write more than 120 pages! Haha. Thanks!

Question is not for me but i say it would depend on the genre. Like fantasy and scifi has a lot of world building

Insanity is a potential offer for a complete rewrite when a editor should simply offer Thier inion of what's wrong and decline. A complete remake seems more like a tactic of can we turn this person into a slave? If you do a complete rewrite keep the first, don't trash it.

I don't know what lucky authors get more than a simple "Not for me - but good luck". Alas, that leaves one with no way of guessing where the problem lies. So disheartening.
