Once again a fascinating and very useful feature to let someone else look at your iPhone, such as perusing your photos, without being able to access the rest of your iPhone.

I used guided access for my insurance card recently but my Lock Screen is just text: "I do not wish to speak with you, answer your questions, or sign or hand you any documents based on my 5th Amendment rights under the United States Constitution. I do not give you permission to enter my home based on my 4th Amendment rights under the United States Constitution unless you have a warrant to enter, signed by a judge or magistrate with my name on it that you slide under the door. I do not give you permission to search any of my belongings based on my 4th Amendment rights. I choose to exercise my constitutional rights."

Gary, this is such an important subject to discuss and you did a great job of not only showing how it can be done but also the reasons why. Of course these situations are going to be very rare but knowing it is possible to hand over a phone and not worry the other person can manipulate the phone is very, very satisfying, right? Keep up the great work and it is still a wonder how/why you do not have over 1M subs to this channel 👏🏽

This is a great video. I've been leery of using digital copies of of DL or insurance card because I don't want to hand over my phone to a cop who can then look through it while sitting in the patrol car. This information is useful in case I ever decide to start using digital copies of those documents.

Thank you. I am annoyed that it doesn’t subdivide the touch into pinch and zoom and swiping or moving to another picture. I want them to be able to look and zoom into the one picture I am showing them but not move to another picture. You have to enable touch for pinch and zoom but that also allows them to move to other pictures. I’ll have to stick with the advice to never hand over my phone. Also it doesn’t seem to want to activate in the wallet app for me.

I suppose this could come in handy for e-tickets on trains (athough ive never had to pass them my phone, they just scan the QR code on my phones screen And train stations where i live either have no gates at all, or just have automatic ticket gates, and at the stations I’ve been to with these gates there is a QR scanner on the gate Although for the digital PASS card on my phone (proof of age), there is a QR code button, so i am not sure how to set up guided access for that app (the app assumes that the business will not require me to hand over my phone to them once I’ve opened the ID screen)

As an attorney I would recommend against ever using a digital driver's license on your phone, or having proof of insurance on your phone. Hand him or her the card version and keep your phone in your pocket or purse. Your phone is your communication with the outside world. An officer could be mistaken about something (anything) and conclude that your phone needs to be confiscated for some strange reason. Now you are not able to communicate with the outside world... and don't bother looking for a payphone or bother a stranger to use their phone these days.

Yes, but what if you just don't have it. So many people forget or don't realize they need the insurance card. Plus, how about the situation where you are carded at a bar? Many people aren't comfortable showing just anyone their birthday and home address. Digital IDs solve that.
@TheSwitzAutomotive

@@macmost Gary, there's a world of difference between dealing with a clerk, bartender, stadium ticket booth guy, and law enforcement. Law enforcement has police powers. They have search and seizure powers, and powers to arrest. Be smart and have your driver's license and insurance with you when you go drive the car. Your phone stays in your pocket or purse. All that said, this is an excellent video, as are all your videos. I'm just wanting to warn people to be smart and avoid law enforcement problems. Thanks, Tom

@@macmost Gary I don't think we're talking about a unique situation in which you don't have your physical license with you, by mistake. I think we're talking about a person's day to day habit. Day to day you should give the cops your ID card and keep your phone tucked away. I plan to never give my phone to the police, ever, for a traffic stop. I never have, and never will, and I think it's the way to go.

Get into the habit of using it when you hold out your phone to scan rewards or anything like that even if you have no intention of handing it to the person. It will get you into the habit of using it and on the off chance that somebody does a snatch and grab and runs off, it's locked Getting used to using it will allow your muscle memory to kick in during a stressful situation. That worked for me after a car accident a few weeks ago! Showed the cop my insurance card with no stress

@macmost

It really depends on what you need and what you like. If you need some Mac apps (Xcode, Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, etc) then no. If you like macOS over iPadOS (multiple windows on the screen, for instance) then no. But if you only need apps available on an iPad and use a keyboard with it, and don't mind the iPadOS interface over macOS, then maybe. But it may be true for you, and then not true for someone else.

If you're worried about police taking your phone, you need to set up 5-press lock. It requires the passcode to re-open the phone. Face ID won't work, and it's easy to quickly lock it before they take it without being obvious. Yes, they can unlock it after numerous court orders, usually, but if you're in that kind of trouble, good luck.

I tried this on "wallet" and it asked me to draw an area to exclude. I tried it by drawing a circle and it has frozen my phone on the home screen with apps visible. triple tapping does nothing except enable zoom. trying a reset brings up the reset screen and it's frozen too. Like seriously frozen. Edit: Had to do a forced reset (tap and release volume up, tap and release volume down, press and hold until apple logo appears - It takes like 15 seconds for Apple logo to appear). Thankfully, this cleared the circle drawn on the screen as well as the frozen screen. Went into "guided access" and turned it off. Burning this tutorial (although I loved and appreciated your "numbers" tutorial.

Great video, albeit depressing. I don't think this is a "perfect world" issue. This is a legitimate problem showing that not all places are ready to support smart technology. You should never have to hand your smartphone over to anybody other than police with a warrant. There is almost nothing more private and personal to you. Often, these days, a smartphone can also get incredibly expensive. This isn't like handing over a credit/debit card. If a person doesn't hand back your device this is an extreme financial loss which may not be easy to recover from even if your private information is safe. If you have to relinquish a grip on your device, it's better to treat that place as not supporting smart technology. If you are merely displaying something there is zero reason why you should need to relinquish grip on your device. The person will just have to lean in if they can't see or wear glasses.
