Buy long dated puts when the VIX is low? Hedge yourself if you have a large portfolio.
@ChrisShawUK
@ChrisShawUK 4 ай бұрын
You should only ever invest in things you understand. So if you know all about puts and vixes, why not? There's a danger for retail investors though who try to do professional sounding things. Generally, the investment professionals have access to much better information, real time pricing, transaction fees and liquidity than retail platforms. Copying investment strategies from professionals is like trying to copy man United in your local park. It might work, but they have much better infrastructure than you.

@@ChrisShawUK My post wasn't a scam but scammers have latched on. If you have the time it's worthwhile to look into hedging. Look for the most inflated names or indices and try to find value in put options. As I said, generally the VIX gives a good indication of put value.

I invested £20k in various tech stocks almost exactly 2 years ago as my first dalliance into investing. Of course they all took a 25% dip almost immediately. In my case my £20k went down to £14k. I just sighed, chalked it up to experience and then just left it all as it was. When I checked on the wallet a month ago it was worth £25k.

Good sound advice Toby. I think our risk tolerance is far less than what we imagine it to be. A lot of folks say they are quite happy to see a drawdown of 30-40%, but when it happens they realise they are far less happy with it!. It all comes down to time horizon. If you don't need the money for 20 years or more then a major crash is not an issue, but if you need it within 5 years it could be a big problem.
@Andygb78

Yeah, I think the hardest thing is what to do with your investments the closer you get to cashing out. I'd say if you were 5 years away from needing to sell your investments, you should have at least 50% bonds anyway, and be working to swap more of your equities for bonds each year until you needed the money.

I mean to say you can’t figure out if the market is expensive or not is a bit ignorant, they are historically PE ratios. Which indicate if the market is overpriced or not, this is the time to DCA slightly less and to leave some on the side to prepare if there is a dip on the horizon

I am in favour of always staying invested, but I think you've only told part of the story on buy the dip vs DCA. Buy the dip definitely outperforms in certain scenarios vs DCA. I went to your source in the graph and in the article where you've pulled the graph he actually point out over a 25 year periods from mid 90s a side by strategy it outperformed DCA by what looks to me about 16% in total. Between 1930 and 1980 DCA appears to outperform using his data, whilst buy the dip outperforms from 1980 onwards and also prior to 1930. I would say that most people from a psychology perspective really probably should just be doing DCA, as most people fall into the buy high, sell low psychological trap. Regardless though, going super hard with money at very low markets, provides great returns.

No debt check, mortgage paid check, 4 months emergency check, and pension sorted check. As a late arrival to investing, i have a limited amount of growth to keep it interesting and a few dividend with the bulk in ETF's. Im working on the principle that I've made nothing and lost nothing until i cash in. Now i know im not going to end up a millionaire but my plan is to buy me a few more years before i need to start taking my pension. If, on the other hand im down when i retier, then maybe I'll take my pension and wait for my investments to come good and supplement it instead. But as im not dependent on the market I'll take the highs with a pinch of salt and the lows as a sale. Best case i retier a little better off. Worse case my funeral is paid for and my daughter gets a free holiday 👍

quick question: I've started investing a few years ago and I think I've got a fair understanding of what this entails (Invest for the long run, go against your feelings, dollar cost averaging, compound interest etc..). so I know that if I never pull that money out one day in a very long time I'll have a bit more of it. what I haven't figured out yet is how to understand when it's the right time to pull out and enjoy the profits. Sure I could keep investing until I'm sixty and have a lot more than if I pulled out at forty, but what would I really use that big chunk of money for at that age (provided my pp is enough to live on)? See, I would not want to not enjoy life (buy my dream car, travel the world, hobbies etc..) because my only goal was to "never pull that money out!!!" until I'm too old to actually enjoy them.
@Andygb78

It just depends on your investment goal. Mine is money for old age. But you could give yourself a 5 or 10 year time horizon to accumulate money to spend on a particular thing. You can choose to invest for whatever you like. It's just it delivers better results and is less risky investing over the long term.

If there is a crash, I don't want to be selling funds, so I have ~ 3 years of cash...hopefully this is enough to ride out any storm. I've also tried to diversify my portfolio so I don't have all eggs in one basket. It's interesting how there are so many different opinions about what will happen to the markets in the next few years, with some saying we're set for a bull run for at least another year, while others a predicting a huge crash before the year end...oh, for that crystal ball! 😅

Yep, we pretty much have exactly the same strategy... Except I aim for 4 years cash, not three (I'm currently on 2.7 so will top that up this year at some point). A tip on draw down which I started last October when I was 55. I have decided to take 16k pa tax free until state pension at 67 (ufplus with 25% tax free and the remaining within personal allowance) When it gets paid, it's on a month 1 basis, so you are taxed as if you earn £144k. So £4k is deducted. You can claim this back by filling out a p55 form on paper (!) and sending it to Newcastle. They then refund this back to your bank account in about 7-8 weeks after.

@@ChrisShawUK in the absence of other income, withdrawing £16,760 tax-free prior to SP commencement can be a good strategy indeed. To avoid having the emergency tax code created, some people withdraw a small amount as their initial withdrawal to get a normal tax code attached to the pension payments, thus avoiding having to spend time on claiming back withheld taxes.

For most working people who are investing regularly, dollar cost averaging is the way to do it. Buy index funds based on sectors you like and don’t worry about the movement in the markets month to month.

Index funds are not sector based (maybe you're mixing them with ETFs?) Index funds are based on markets and track externally defined formulaic indices (e.g. FTSE 100, FTSE 250, s&p500 etc) I wouldn't even call the dow Jones an index (although I'm sure lots of people do). The constituents of the dow are not determined by a formula .... They are decided by a bunch of dudes.

I made the mistake of starting to invest in 2020 and trusting investment advisor sites like the Motley Fool. If I trusted my judgement and only invested in companies I know and like I would have been very green now. Instead Im barely after following my own advice in 2022 & 2023

I had one of my finest years financially in 2023, despite the fact that many others has a chaotic year. a $40K investment yielded almost $300K. My financial advisor set up some criteria, which I followed, and the results were good. Stock investing is what I would suggest to anyone wishing to invest extra money and earn passive income.

Toby I am an old investor just starting with a SIPP, I am anticipating a market correction in shares, so would it be sensible to put my £60k SIPP contribution into a bond fund. I would want to start withdrawing out of my investments in 10 years from now.

Great vid Toby, my advice from investing experience is keep it simple and stay globaly diversified but be ready to capitalise when the opportunity prevails. My game plan is to stay well diversified with 10% hedging be it bonds or a gold etf, never stop investing monthly, but when the next 25% drop occurs in say the nasdaq or sp500 etc rotate out including the safe hedging and go all in in a couple of indices that have crashed way down, ride them up for a year then diversify again ;]. Every crash is immediately followed next year with a bull run.

If people are buying stocks and shares as a get rich quick they may find a very rude awakening. Buy well and think of minimum five years, better 10 or 20 and do not tinker with them, that’s the best advice I got years ago. As for market dips, I don’t look. :)

While cumulating, stock market downturn should be welcomed. The bigger the better. It is difficult emotionally mainly for those who are not good with maths. This is my fear scenario: the market goes nowhere for the next 20 years. Even most faithful investors could throw the towel. Still, investing is the best we can do for future selves.

Agree that SIPPs are the best long term investment vehicle we have. For lots of reasons including the accessibility. Selling and withdrawing are two different concepts though. You can still sell your holdings within a SIPP at any age. They just can't be withdrawn. So you still need temperament when managing your sipp through choppy times.

I regret not getting in the market at the drop in 2020. Just patiently waiting for another drop to dump a lump sum in the market. Funny how the FTSE 100 hasn't gone up or down in 20 years. 🤣 Just gentle rolling.

The FTSE 100 is just steady away because of the nature of the companies in it. No tech or growth companies, mostly just pharma, financials, utilities & consumer staples. It behaves in a similar way to how a blue chip defensive company stock in those sectors would.
