Daniel, thank you for all of the informative videos you post. I just got started into "the next level" of collecting at the beginning of September. My wife thinks I'm nuts. Before, I would fill my books with the best example for each year. In September, I took the deep dive and emptied two large plastic pretzel containers that were each filled, one with pennies and the other nickels, dimes, and quarters that accumulated over the years. I've looked through the pennies for errors and high grades and have sorted the other coins. I asked a friend if he had any spare change laying around to sell to me and he said, "I have a few pennies". The "few" pennies turned out to be 173 lbs. of pennies that have been sitting in a glass water cooler bottle for 25-30 years! Most of the pennies are from 1960-1999. I have those sorted by decade and I'm starting to go through them. Many of these pennies look close to, if not flawless to me, especially since they've been sitting in a glass bottle for 20-40 years. I'm currently tossing the ones that are not errors or have blemishes or sulfur spots on them. My problem is I'm afraid I might be looking too closely at some of these coins when determining if they are at a certain grade. I compare them to images on the web and they do compare. It's hard to separate the error searching from the grade searching! How do I know I'm not tossing good coins? Thank you and keep the videos coming!

Very good video! My Pap was an ardent coin collector, and I took his collection as part of the estate settlement! I have been gradual selling off the collection as I’m older now,and use it to pay my healthcare! The grading question is a tough one , AND I like your attitudes toward it! I’ve had a couple dozen coins graded and my results are mixed at best! I sent a dozen $2.50 Quarter Eagles to NGC, and low and behold several came back has mount removed, so I probably didn’t recover the grading cost on them! One came back MS 66, so I probably made a few hundred above grading on that one! So, it is mixed! I’ve made the decision toNOT submit the 50 Morgans I’ve left because they are all common date, and if I get the conserved as many are toned, and graded, it’s tough to get your money back on E-bay! Anyhow thanks for your honest opinion, some guys are not as even handed about the whole question as you are! Thanks again! Tom (beemabear on E-bay)

Q2 - Are rotated dies mint errors, and does the degree of rotation have a relationship to the value of the coin? If I have learned anything from you, it is this; DO THE RESEARCH! Thanks, Dan.
@CoinHELPu5 жыл бұрын
Yes it does and it is a mint error and it can increase value based on the coin type, some early coins are known for rotated dies. So a look up on Heritage Coin Auctions sold auctions for rotated dies would help a lot. Thanks!!

1914 Indian $5 gold in MS62 (maybe MS63) condition - needs grade and encapsulation still. Bought it for $1200! Also a 1894-o Morgan silver dollar in MS62 condition - also has to be OFFICIALLY graded (never did trust handwritten 2x2 grades) and encapsulated. That was $750 right there! @@CoinHELPu Exact die markings don't always show up on every coin because we also have to consider the stage of the die. For instance, a die dot and/or die break might show up on a later stage doubled die, but not on the earlier stage. Doubled dies took quite some time for me to learn and figure out. I like being able to go back and edit the mistakes I've made in my blog too.
