A warning from California Highway Patrol officers about driving near the U.S.-Mexico border.
They say far too many drivers are missing warning signs and are accidentally crossing the border.
“We get it every now and then unfortunately its more than it should, it should be never," said officer, Jesse Matias.
The signs are located on Interstate 5 and the 805 and warn drivers to get off the freeway before entering Mexico.

This happened to me as a Canadian. I was new to the area for university, which was a border to the US. Went out to explore and ended up across into the US LOL. I knew it was too late but what could I do? US border agent was chill. Simply told me to go out to the traffic light and spin back. I could have driven off into the US but I am sure they had eyes on my like a hawk LOL. Canadian agents gave me the toughest time. Searched my car, asked me 101 questions, the whole nine. Finally I was let back into the country LOL. Then when I went to the US a few months later with my parents, the US agents asked me if I had been to the US recently. I of course said no, but they're like are you sure? I remembered the incident and said oh yeah blah blah blah, and then we were good lmao. Gooooood times.

Here in Michigan at the US-Canada border on the interstate it warns you MULTIPLE times. It warns you about 2-3 miles before the last exit AND shows flags on the signs with “CANADA” and “USA” written on the lanes saying which lanes lead where. In Canada coming back to the US, it’s a little more discrete but they have a U-turn back to Canada pretty far up, almost to the toll booths. Obviously people should be aware that they’re super close to an international border, but accidentally crossing without the proper ID can go on your permanent record and make it harder to travel in the future.

Happens a lot on the other border too. If I'm waiting for the bus between the US and Canada up in Detroit, while at the bus stop I see a lot of cars with plates from out of state (non-Michigan or Ontario) accidentally turn off Jefferson or straight from Randolph onto the entrance to the Windsor tunnel towards Canada. Fortunately though its just street-level and there is a toll booth before you enter the tunnel so if you get lost you can just ask to turn around and a CBP officer will move the barrier over to let you U-turn

There should be multiples of u turn spots past even these two final ones. You should also be allowed to say u don’t want to enter and turn around at the gate once you have met up with a parson. Besides this they should have temporary dividers that can be moved and people can call the office number in case they made the wrong turn. This way the border agents can come out to where your vehicle is and move the barricade to go to the other side somehow.

@jeremys6631 How more obvious can it get than "last USA exit" or "u-turn back to USA"? There are multiple opportunities to avoid crossing the border, and we have this magical thing called GPS, which makes it even easier these days to avoid this issue. It's the driver's responsibility to know where they are and where they're going.

@JasonJia11, clearly, you rely on GPS way too much. The GPS won't tell you that you're close to the border, plus 1 or 2 signs stating that the border is coming up is extremely insufficient. I've seen more signs dictating a rural exit on the interstate. Hell, I've seen a lot of proper signage for prohibited traffic through a tunnel. When it comes to driving, you need to make it obnoxiously known that the border is coming up. Crossing the border is a pretty big deal and they should not be forcing people to call 911 just to make a U-turn.

Happened to me and three friends in 2004 while we were staying in San Diego. We kept looking for the parking lots for Tijuana described in the guide book. By the time we saw the sign, we were in the far right lane expecting an exit for parking. We couldn’t cross the traffic so we got onto a one way street into Tijuana, finally found a cross street to the one way back out. We could see the border crossing but a Tijuana cop pulled behind us and pulled us over. He told us we were under arrest, going before a judge, the rental car would be impounded and we’d spend the rest of our vacation waiting in jail. We were crazy scared.Then he hinted that for $300 cash he could get them to go easy. We came up with the cash, that we would probably have spent on Tijuana junk anyway, gave it to him and he escorted us to the border. Never want to go back or have anything to do with any part of Mexico ever again.

I had my passport when this happened to me. But there’s literally no real checkpoint when crossing from San Diego to Tijuana. Just one guy waving to drive through. It’s easy to not pay attention and just drive past on the highway.

The sign for the lane heading to Mexico should be colored yellow, not the lane heading back to the US. People driving long distance on highway will automatically take the lane without yellow sign since that's usually the default option.

A week ago I was going back to Mexico from I805, there was no traffic that day, as I was approaching the border I saw in distance how some driver going from I5, just before the two freeways merge, carelessly turned to his right to take the last exit crossing all 4 lanes. So dangerous!!

I solely blame distracted driving, there's blinking lights above it also. I understand it might be hard to see when sunny but ultimately you do not miss information like that if you drive correctly. Which is to basically observe every single traffic sign. I checked maps and I think the first sign is 2 miles out. While I think it should stand out a bit more, and it should be before Exit no.2 there still is enough time to react to going into another country?!

When there are soo many signs posted all in one stop it’s hard to read them all in a moving car when you are also supposed to be paying attention to the traffic around you. There needs to be more signs separated out further back snd Mexico needs to be more bold

There was actually a way to make a U turn if you missed the signs, but when the US customs decided to put booths entering into Mexico around 2020 they removed that U turn option, they dont even use the booths and i imagine they spent millions for them

The U-turn option is still there, it’s been the same one for more than 30 years. The booths you’re taking about are after that U-turn. I agree, are they ever gonna use those booths and what was the purpose for them? But the U-turn is still there, did you not see the video??? No wonder people miss those signs, this video is showing you the exact way to use that U-turn, yet there’s people complaint about no where to make a U-turns hahahahaha
@Acemoddz
@Acemoddz Жыл бұрын
@@SunnyDiegoProduction The u turn you are referring to is going through the gate to re enter into US and im guessing people get scared, there was a u turn way before that, there was no gate, so its not the same at all, it was an actual u turn not a left turn into a gate

We have many borders in Europe, one was direct in the City of Hamburg into the free port. All of them have had *BIG* signs of a country flag at every lane same do you found on airports. 😂 Very visualized and easy understanding. Why long texting on a highway? 😮 It could be so easy right?

this is how the border is signed up here in Windsor/Detroit area. On the US side, at the intersection for the tunnel to Canada, there is big "CANADA ONLY" text on the turning lanes on Jefferson ave., and for the bridge, the highway exit signs have US flags for traffic staying in America, and Canadian flags for exiting traffic
