Being in the wrong lane at a junction is inevitable in Great Britain. Poor road markings, signs or just traffic blocking your view of the road markings can mean you don't know what lane you need until it's too late. Hey Richard, just wanted to say I passed my test this week with only 4 minor faults! I hit the side of the curb when parking up in the first five minutes, and I thought I'd failed there and then. However, I'd watched your video on mindset and nerves during the test and just kept going, making sure not to make any more mistakes. When I got back to the center, turns out the curb was just a minor fault as there weren't any pedestrians nearby and I did everything else correctly on the manoeuvre. If I'd let that mistake get to me, I probably would've failed on something else, but your advice really helped me out in that situation. Passed mine 10 years ago now, well almost 10 and a half years ago. Back in the day, even slightly hitting the sidewalk with the wheel was an automatic failure. Glad they stopped that shit. I mean seriously. It happens to everyone even bus drivers. A lot of my rental cars had slight damages on the wheel rim (not my damage fyi). This country is so obsessed with little shit that they forget to look at the bigger picture: most of the drivers here don’t know the signs. I found that the UK theory test pays very little attention to road signs. I’ve been around so many drivers here (in their cars) who had absolutely no idea what a sign meant. Dangerous and yet the focus of the driving test was a little bump on a side walk. This is the reason why I’ve never driven in this country since my driving test and will never drive here again. I don’t feel safe. I prefer renting a car and drive on my own in unknown lands. Believe it or not, in some places where you’d think ppl drive horribly they actually do know their road signs

I taught my to children to dive in my 50’s. I ‘invented’ three rules of driving that you do not find in any text book: 1) The training starts the moment they sit in your car for the first time, from early childhood. They sense your attitude to others in the traffic, the movement of your car, your speed, your braking, your comment about other drivers. 2) Start any tour 5 min earlier. No last second decisions in the ride. Everything runs smoothly, no rush. 3) Drive in such a way that your passengers at all time feel you are in control, hat they can relax, confident that you will bring them safe and sound to their destination.

So today I was in a town I was unfamiliar with. Got to a roundabout, had no idea which lane to be in until I got to the stop line. Remembered your video from yesterday and ended up taking the exit (I was in the left lane) before carrying on to the next roundabout and going all the way around it to get back to sort of where I needed to be. I'd like to think I'd have done that anyway but this video was a great reminder as to good practices when it comes to unfamiliar roundabouts in unfamiliar towns.

Nearly 48 years ago on my test I made a boob on what direction the examiner wanted me to take, he wanted me to go straight on and do a right turn at the lights further on, but I misinterpreted what he said and I did mirror and signalled to turn at the previous right turn and started to slow when he corrected me of which I safely changed course and carried on to the correct right turn, I suppose it was just a bit of nervousness there, which I think he understood and passed me 1st time.😅 I enjoy the videos which gives me a brush up on the rules and safety. If changing lanes mid-roundabout was a test fail then I'd be failing my test basically every time I go for a drive in the UK. Which lane goes where is basically unique to each roundabout here, not knowing whether you can leave from the right lane until you see the road markings at the last second, road markings that are often faded. I would much prefer if there was some consistency than each roundabout being designed differently based on some know-it-all road designer running traffic simulations without thinking about what real human beings have to deal with when using that junction.

Great video! (useful in EU too). As you said-driving in the wrong lane and taking the wrong exit is inevitable and will happen at some point. If you drive in the wrong lane either unknowingly or because being unable to change lanes because of dense traffic and take the wrong exit, you gotta stay calm and remember that there is always a place to turn around or a turn/road that will lead you back to the junction and you can just repeat it and take the correct lane and exit this time. This happened to me a plenty times, specially in abroad or in big cities. I always got back to the correct path eventually, being nervous about taking the wrong exit makes it only worse. Also its better to take the wrong way than to put yourself, others or your car in danger. Like the situation with debris, I would have done the same (you risk a flat tire driving over it). It happened on multiple occasions that I missed a turn/exit because I did not see it untill last moment and was driving too fast to take it,so I just went the wrong way for like 5 minutes and then turned around and backtracked or found an alternate route. Thats better than risking an accident or a dangerous situation. Thanks for the vid!

This happened to me on my test two days ago! The lane I was supposed to take was closed on the day of my test, and I realised too late that I'd gone into the wrong lane by mistake. I just followed the lane I was in and ended up having to take the wrong exit, but I did it safely. The examiner said it was OK and redirected me. I ended up passing with 1 minor! It was my 4th attempt, I started learning over 5 years ago! I am so happy! I watched your videos after my earlier fails and they really helped me with general driving technique and preparing for the test. Thank you for doing what you do :)

I discovered for myself the trick of going around the roundabouts when in the wrong lane or when your SatNav needs more time to update itself and give you the correct exit. This is the first video I've seen that gives the instruction. It seems obvious but most people seem to panic and barge into the lane to get to their exit, causing havoc. I hope more people come to realise that you can go round roundabouts as many times as you need in order to sort yourself out and make a safe exit!

Hi Richard As another ADI I’m enjoying watching your videos - will find them useful whilst teaching - especially the blind spot video on fast roads - really handy having all the different video views to explain rather than trying to explain without. With regards to your changing lanes on roundabouts when in the wrong lane, especially on test, I feel, with 16 years of teaching people, this would be a challenge for them. Especially taking into account their nerves on the day, and that all too familiar feeling of panic that ultimately sets in! With hindsight of 45 years of driving experience, I don’t think you develop these skills and Road confidence until you’ve been driving solo for a good period of time. I appreciate that, when I’m teaching, and try to see it from my students perspective (usually highly anxious). I try to give them the tools to keep the panic at bay, and their common sense at the forefront of their minds. Obviously if they feel confident to change lanes safely they can, but I also tell them they have the option to simply stay in the lane their in, if they suddenly realise they are in the wrong lane, and go the way the lane is taking them. As you rightly pointed out, they mustn’t continue to do this, but it’s an alternative to keep them safe, and at the end of the day, if they are using a sat nav, the pressures off because that will redirect them on to their route. The worst are junctions with a bespoke layout intended to improve traffic flow. An example is the M4 Junction 28, which used to be a straightforward roundabout. However, the southern side of the original roundabout is now part of a pair of motorway sliproads. On this side of the roundabout, the right "lane" is a motorway off-slip from the M4 east (flowing in the opposite direction to the roundabout, and separated by a barrier), the middle lane is a motorway on-slip for the M4 west, and the left lane actually functions as the original roundabout. This becores the A48 westbound, but there is a right filter lane that links to the A48 eastbound, giving access to the remainder of the roundabout (the A467 up into the Valleys, and theM4 east). To confuse matters further the signage is overcomplicated, has bilingual east and west indications in small type and the M4 (E) is not indicated at all on the on-road lane markings. I think I have driven it three times since it was remodelled. The first time was a couple of years ago, I treated it like a conventional roundabout and insterad of exiting on to the A467 ended up on the M4 westbound. The next junction is the A48(M) peeling off, so the first chance to turn round is Junction 30, and head back through the congested junction with the A48(M). Last week I encountered it two more times. The first I made the same mistake as I'd made two years ago. The second time I thought, "I'm not going to end up on the M4 west this time, I'm staying hard ovber on the right to access the rest of the roundabout, I can always go round again if necessary". I then find there is a barrier between my lane and the lanes farther to the right, and traffic n them is flowing towards me! Far over on the LEFT I saw a aign for the M4 east! Yes, I ended up on the M4 West again! Only now I have seen it on Google maps do I understand it, hopefully I will still remember in several months or yeards when I am next there!

I did something like this last week. I was dropping my friend off home but was on auto pilot going to my house. So Coming to a roundabout I was suppose to be turning right but was in the left lane. There was a car on my right so I couldn't move over but there were 0 cars on the roundabout and also 0 cars behind me or the car on my right so I stopped at the roundabout and let the car on the right go first so I could then go behind the car on my right. I made sure I wasn't holding any cars up and no chance of any other hazards. I felt like this was ok since I used my judgement to make sure I do so as safely as possible without holding others up. If there were more cars around I would then of found another way.

Excellent advice but the large roundabouts that create the biggest problem are those where you want to turn right when there are traffic lights on the roundabout before you make your right turn because that means there is less space to change to the correct lane to complete your right turn when you have to stop at a red light on the roundabout.

11:51 - Over here, in Denmark, we do it differently, so that was interesting to hear. Over here, multilane roundabouts are pretty rare, but when they are there, you're supposed to use the left lane (we're right side drivers) until the last exit before your exit, at which point you should change lane

It was really interesting to hear what you said about the unofficial 12 o clock rule. There is a standard four exit roundabout by my with 2 lanes leading up to it with no signs and no markings. The “straight on” exit is about 5 past 12 - about 50% of cars think it’s left lane to go straight, whilst the other 50% think it’s the right lane. Both inevitability think they are in the right and when they meet in the middle blare horns at each other (an hourly occurrence!)

I never knew it was called the 12 o clock rule, I just learnt it implicitly! Fwiw in the US, since roundabouts are still a novelty, they all come with handy diagrams that remind drivers of this rule and which lane they should use to get to the exit they want. Since many roundabouts replaced crossroad intersections, the roundabouts tend to be simple designs with four exits perpendicular to each other rather than the sometimes awkward and occasionally monstrous British roundabout with seven exits or more. And yet still some people get it badly wrong...

The way I would read that right hand lane split is thus. The left hand of those three would take me to second exit keeping in the left lane. The centre lane would either take me second exit right hand lane or third exit left hand lane. The right hand of those three would take me third exit right hand lane or continue round the roundabout. The debris is a problem. If I thought I could stagger the mess without damaging my car then that's OK. Driving slowly and being able to assess the situation is very helpful as you then have the time to take appropriate action. Failing that I would have done the same as you.

Something to remember is the box doesn't know what is going on around you... The only things it knows are your speed, steering and position. So long as you don't cut about the whole time and you drive smoothly it doesn't know about anything else

I quite often end up in the wrong lane on bigger roundabouts, and usually end up just going that lane goes, and yes it was the motorway once!! I won't drive over debris for anything! On the back road to Peebles there's a pothole, well more of a bomb crater at Kailzie (Kay Lee) Gardens, and I'll wait until I can drive round it.

10:53 Until a short while ago, Bramcote Island was a prime example of this. Here, you have a hamburger style roundabout where lanes 2 and 3 of the A52 Eastbound carriageway continue through the roundabout. Lane 1 is then used for all other exits, including an exit beyond the 12 o’clock mark. This would be confusing, but now there are signs telling you to use the left lane.

I feel like that is a concept that is lost on many! If you legally and safely have to go the wrong way - your bed is made! Just go the wrong way. I use the expression "Eat your mistake". Where I live, we see some absolutely astonishing moves drivers make - just in an effort to avoid going the wrong way even for just a small distance. 1:38 Roundabouts just seem to make sense once you've mastered them, and then you drive in some European countries (e.g. Spain and I think also Romania and maybe a couple of other Eastern European states) where their driving laws teach you that drivers must always use the outer lane on a roundabout regardless of exit being taken, and the inner lane only for overtaking on the roundabout. They basically treat it like a normal two lane road that's simply curved in a circle. What this means is that in Spain taking the red line is absolutely the correct thing to do in your example. My first time driving in Spain was an adventure. Therefore if whilst driving on a roundabout in the UK you see a Spanish car then give them a wide berth and expect them to do something like this.

Last week I had 2 idiots create a VERY dangerous situation. I was at a spiral roundabout and needed to take the third exit. There were 3 lanes, the middle and third lane were for right turns (I was in the middle lane). As I was approaching my exit which was the third one, 2 cars in the right lane were coming off at the second exit in the inside lane. Rather than do the safest thing and go around again they almost T boned my car to get off the roundabout, it was very scarey but thankfully I wasn't driving very fast which actually saved me from colliding with both cars.

I’m not a driver yet but I’ll be doing tests soon, so I’m going to make my estimates now: 1. If at a roundabout, continue the normal way someone in your lane would, then get into the right lane to exit after looping round. 2. If at a traffic light, then it depends on the situation, if it’s low traffic and you are only one lane out and it wouldn’t cut anyone off, then just take the turn anyway, e.g. if the layout is < ^ ^ and you’re in the middle, just turn anyway, but if you’re in the right lane you gotta keep going like normal and find a way to turn around anyway.

I hate spiral roundabouts and have been driving for over a year now. They are confusing but I try to approach them slowly (checking my mirrors at all times) and follow the road markings and any signs as best as I can. I found counting my exits helps me to navigate them easier. Thankfully I haven't been a hazard following this method.

@@meredith2803 You are welcome. Some spirals are more difficult than others. When I first passed my test I forced myself to do spiral roundabouts. I would go for a drive on Sunday mornings, very early when the roads were quiet. Try challenging yourself to a few spirals when it's very very quiet, if you mess up (I have) atleast you're not being a hazard and can learn from it.

Imo, the only ''bad'' thing You did in the video clip, was using right turn signal at the lane you chose before going into roundabout (i mean, You should've cancelled it when you noticed You're in the wrong lane(but i'm not sure if it's a thing in uk). Although, we don't use turn signals at all when entering roundabout (we only use turn signal when leaving it) where i'm from, but Your lane clearly shown 'straight ahead', not right. cutting lanes are not great example, but since this particular roundabout doesn't have any path lanes you need to follow, and the traffic was light as heck, i think it's fine. As you said, dealing with problems individually is the key. Keep it up, You're awesome ; )

I remember when i was instructor i used to tell the pupil if they know they go clip a kerb or make other mistake then let the examiner know so at least he knows you are aware of clipping the kerb or whatever else it may be. Same as 3 point turn, as long as you are not there all day take as many shunts as it takes as long as you dont hit the kerb

Great tip not to drive over debris. But it's advisable not to forget to put on the hazard lights when stopping and getting out of the car to remove the debris Actually, it would be great if you create a video on the proper use of hazard lights. Hazard lights and horn are two things I don't see people use correctly on the road

We've got a roundabout in Southampton where lane 2 splits into lane 2/3/4, it catches a lot of drivers out who just drift from lane 1 into lane 2 because they're not use to it, the amount of close calls is in sane! According to the local council, they changed it to make it safer.

Great tips. Yes, be in the wrong lane can happen but if safe you can change lane. However, is too common these days people using the wrong lane to skip a queeue and than changing lane aggressivily when is not safe doing that. When they get used doing that, they cannot assess the risk anymore till an accident. Usually, in my experiece, when two aggressive drivers meet each other. Maybe, a review of drive test after 15/20 years should be considered.

As a LHD driver , I usually merge into thr right lane provided it is well shown beforehand. Otherwise it is pretty unavoidable to be wrong.

Where the one lane splits into three, it looks like they are all marked as straight ahead and right. It also looks like there were two lanes on exit, therefore either the middle or right lane seems fine to me.

Even after driving 5+ years, I still have trouble at a few certain roundabouts, one in particular is the one where you leave the M1 near the North Circular Road overpass and the roundabout at Staples Corner. I've made big mistakes there at least 2 times at busy periods, almost resulting in an accident but fortunately, it didn't happen. I think I got confused with the lanes I needed to be in.

@@Undisputed_King Yeah, there's a lot of traffic lights paired with the roundabouts around that area, so congestion happens very frequently. At least for me, you end up feeling forced to maneuver lanes, which is quite daunting for someone not familiar with that area. Must be tough for the London drivers. 🙁

The final boss roundabout is east of Birmingham where the M42 meets the M6 Toll. Up to 6 lanes, faded road markings and although there are signs that tell you in which lane you should be, It’s very hard to tell which lane you’re actually in because it’s just so wide. I first encountered this at night and it took me 3 attempts to get to the right exit.

Case in point: The new Beverley bypass: the wrong lane forced me off in the wrong direction, I pulled in, checked the map, turned around and went back, I was again forced off in the wrong direction - back where I'd come from! - did a u-turn, carefully nudged my way into the correct lane and finally escaped! It didn't help that in travelling NORTH the signage stated HULL. :(

The main problem for me is knowing which lane you need, especially in unfamiliar areas and on unfamiliar roads. Some roundabouts have 5 or even 6 exists, and often there is lots of queueing traffic obscuring the view of the lane markings on the road, meaning you don't know which lane to be in until you've already committed to the junction. In the US they have overhead gantries telling you which lanes to get in well in advance. It doesn't happen often to me, and if in doubt, I stick to the left lane for straight on or left. But sometimes there's 3 or 4 lanes and some roundabouts have special/irregular rules which mean if you can't see the lane markings, you don't know which lane to be in.

When I'm hopelessly lost, i tend to stick to the right hand lane so i can do a full lap of the roundabout and have a look at all the exits first time around. I'll then get into the correct land and take the exit i need on my second lap.

Had a second try from my test but I unfortunately did not pass. Had 1 serious and 3 minors, however there was much improvement in my driving compared to my first try. But I am still gutted about today 😔. The examiner said I did not look to the right on a very easy roundabout but I infact did and I was confused with which roundabout he was talking about. There was no way I can remember what I did, since I was focused on the road and my surroundings, throughout the whole test which made it stressful. I don't know if I can keep up my effort consistent on the next test. I hope you all have a good day.

if in left lane wanting to turn right, can't you stop in the left lane signalling right on approach to the roundabout, and wait until someone lets you move into lane on your right.

I failed my first test on a one way street that split into two with a cycle lane between. I was asked to turn right at the end of the road, just as the cycle lane was appearing on my right hand side. Being a muppet, I turned right from the left lane. Not knowing that I could have pointed out my mistake and instead turning left in order to drive and make my way back onto the test route. What about this situation? A roundabout near me has a slip lane to join it and both lanes are arrow-marked for straight ahead to continue on a specific A road. However, within yards of moving off from junction, dotted-line road markings show the offside lane merging with inside lane. If both lanes are occupied, MUST left lane give way?????

There is a single lane exiting that roundabout for straight on and two lanes exiting it for right; since left is already dealt with you can turn right from the middle lane. The directional sign before the junction helps you choose lane from the thickness of the lines, thin for straight on and fat for right. It's designed for high traffic / slow speed rush-hour so straddling at other times like you did is OK. Possible fail for wearing stripey socks.

I'm not sure if that's true, I usually find the thick line means that's the main route through. But I haven't found a true definition for this yet.

@@ConquerDriving The thick line definitely indicates the primary route as you say, it's covered in the Traffic Signs Manual Chapter 7, Figure 5-1 covers four thicknesses of lines. Whilst it doesn't directly signify the number of lanes or the road width it's a pretty good rule of thumb since the primary route takes the most traffic.

I drove into a wrong lane, that led into a Supermarket Car Park, except---it also led straight into a Car Wash. Which had low walls on both sides. The queue was about 10 cars long. I had to ask 4 driver's to rerverse, and let me out.

something I have always been a little confused with is a set of lights in the centre of the road and I want to turn right there are two green lights a circular green light and below it a green arrow pointing right, can I go right on the circular light or do I need to wait for the green arrow? I often turn right on the circular green light by moving to the centre of the junction is this right? some drivers wait for the green arrow and some dont. In desember I was in Oslo, mid intersection I realized that I was poorly placed to continue where I wanted. I decided to just go with the flow, I ended up in front of a Hotel, with taxis waiting for passenger, and turning around, and pedestrians walking in all directions. Then I realized I was in the middle of a bussy restaurant area, where you off course expect pedestrians everwhere. If had realized where I was before completing the turn, I would at least considered if I could possibly change lane safely, because I lost 5 minuts in front of that hotel, but only adding 200-300 m to my trip. Probably I would still decided to continue, or if I knew where I was, I would be in the correct lane. The issue was that the lanes to go forward, shifted sideways in a sharp s-curve, and I unnowingly ended up where I just had tomake the turn to be safe.

I've used navigation apps right from the start and sometimes i think I'd be just unable to drive without it (even if someone was sitting next to me and telling where to go) So it helps with the lanes and also which turns are okay and which are not. But is it bad? Should i somehow work on it? Because often i don't even look at the signs.

I tell students it's not illegal to change lanes on a roundabout but I don't recommend it on test as it is a high risk manoeuvre for inexperienced drivers and you can always turn around or redirect. The examiners at my local test centre are excellent at giving extra assistance if the signs are not clear. My understanding is that it's the road signs which determine what is a straight on (what appears as 12 o'clock on the sign), not the actual shape of the road in reality.

Drivers in the right lane next to you are expecting you to leave so they can move over to the left and leave at the next exit. A learner driver did this to me recently when I was going straight in the right lane (sometimes you can). I had to brake to avoid them as they cut in front of my path.
