As a gate agent we will try to get you home as best we can, that’s our job, some agents are better at that than others. Some of us will scorch the earth to try and get you home.. others are worried about going on their lunch break. Just remember if it’s weather or air traffic control that caused your flight to be delayed or canceled the airline is not responsible. If the plane breaks down or there’s some issue with the crew and it’s the airlines fault then we will have to put you in a hotel. Always remember that dealing with delays or cancel flights makes our day at the airport the worst just like it does for you The passenger. Contrary to popular belief we don’t just clock in for eight hours and go home no matter what happens. If your flight is delayed then I’m also delayed in going home and seeing my family.. I’m literally trying to get you home so that I can go home, basically never think that the gate agents don’t care, that’s unless they just have absolutely no one to go home to

The airlines need to be held responsible. They are selling tickets that they are unable to commit to and uphold their end of the bargain.

Also keep in mind that the low cost carriers will not re-book you on another airline to get you to your destination. You'll be stuck waiting for their next flight to your destination with available seats. Jet Blue might be the only exception as they now have a partnership with American Airlines, but I still wouldn't count on it. Low cost carriers also will not normally provide you with a hotel room if you are delayed overnight. Just some things to consider when you're shopping purely based on who has the lowest price.

AA reservations agent here. just remember unless you're talking to someone in upper management, the representative you're talking to has absolutely no control on what they can offer you in terms of hotel or food. And it is in your best interest to stay in line because nobody on the phone can issue you hotel or food because that is ONLY at the airport. so please keep your spot and not lose it thinking you can call. And No department at American Airlines can give you actual compensation except for customer relations which only exists online. When you call to American Airlines to get rebooked I'm one of the people who answer. We truly do care about getting people on the next available flight and I do begin to make it my personal mission to the point where I feel defeated when my screen is showing 00000 for every flight for the next two days. as much as we'd love to put you on the next flight we can't create extra seats on the plane.

Stating the airline cancellation problem on "number of cancelled flights" is misleading. It should be percent. For example, 20,000 cancellations out of 2 million flights is only 1%.

That's messed up. If the flight is delayed or canceled why should I all of a sudden have to pay an extra $200 for hotel and food? I should be on the plane, but instead now I lost $200 bucks because airline error?

In the EU, airlines are mandated by law to provide lodging and meals for delayed/canceled flights. Corporations get preferential treatment over consumers in the US.

I'm taking a flight for the first time next month in almost 4 years. Not looking forward to it. I did however, purchase travel insurance. At least if I get stuck overnight, I can stay in a hotel and have the cost reimbursed to me. My advice to anyone traveling is purchase travel insurance with trip interruption. It's really not that expensive. Don't buy it through the airline you are booking the ticket through. Most of the travel insurance you purchase through the airlines doesn't cover much and it's more expensive. Search the internet. If this trip doesn't go as planned, I'll be taking a bus to my next destination the next time I travel. I might arrive a day later, but at least I'll get there.

@@prismspectrum1600 I went with Travel Insured International. Haven't really heard of them, but the price was decent. I saw afterward that John Hancock offers travel insurance. I'd probably go with them, since most people have heard of them and they have been around for ages.

Always have download the airline app on the phone. If you're going to stand in line with the 100 other people by they time you get to the agent the likelihood of another flight with the same airline is slim. Carriers don't have cross booking policy with others. That happened recently at DCA when American just cancelled our flight to LGA due to weather but the later flight was still flying out. We immediately booked on the AA app not even bothering to wait as the flight immediately sold out afterwards. AA customer service had no issues refunding the cancelled flight and gave us 15,000 miles.

That's good advice! I also recommend purchasing travel insurance. Not that expensive and you get reimbursed if you have to stay overnight in a hotel.

Cancelled your flight and book to other airlines you can't force airlines to book you if most of their aircraft is "0" cabin available as if you can stand in the plane as a passenger 🤦 If your ticket is non-refundable it means when you cancelled the flight for a specific airlines the full ticket value will be sitting on the account that you can use as a "Travel Credit" atleast you can use it some other time or for your future flights.

I am traveling overseas this summer. I am FLYING to a major USA hub airport… the day BEFORE. Stay in a hotel the night before people. Then? Less stress to catch the international flight THE NEXT DAY. Worth the extra money (and not that much more). Not rocket science. 🤦🏻‍♀️🇺🇸
