In Oklahoma, tired of winterizing every year. Decided to build a "pool shack" over my equipment this year with a gas heater backup. Also adding a Heat Pump heater to help out on the warm days. We only get really cold for about a month

Thanks for video, I am a new pool owner in Nanaimo BC Canada, normally on the coast here as in the Pacific North West we have mild winters but currently -10C and has been so for a couple of days. The pool has an infinity edge and basin is freezing over. I am running all pumps and have been since freezing began. Based on your comments I am doing nothing else special. Pool Cover is on and there is some ice under cover but your comments seem to work for you so I am going to wait for warmer weather in a couple of days to thaw things out. Thank you

Just a follow up to this, getting to the end of this cold snap. Pumps are still running ice is gradually going. Thankfully no power outage yet will be putting in back up power this year! Wondered if I should put in a pool heater to keep water temp above freezing. Currently water temp is 33F?

Thanks for the video. The challenge that we are having big the Dallas area this week is rolling blackouts . They have already done 5 this morning at my house since 4 am. Electricity is one for about an hour then off for an hour. So our pumps are only running half the time. Temps are going to remain in the teens for about 4 more days. Any suggestions on doing a quick winterizing to get through the cold spell?

So we just put in a brand new pool that was finished 3 weeks ago. We are in a area just north of dallas so we got the huge freeze. We have never had a pool, and our builder knows that, and when this freeze came, we asked him if there was anything we should do. He said that moving water wont freeze and to let the freeze protective mode run and turn the heater on and it should be fine. We asked about breaking up the ice on top of poo and on water features and he said no. After day 2, we asked him again if there is anything we can do to prevent any damage and if we needed to cover the spigot where the water is hooked up to keep pool levels good. He said yea, go ahead and take the hose off and cover it. This is 2 days into the freeze. Needless to say i could not get it off but did wrap it. We asked him if we needed to break up the ice. He says yes this time and put some of our salt (its a salt water pool) on the ice and water fall (it was kinda like your water feature) and that would help. So we did. And he said keep the heater on. Now, during this time, we told him, which he already knew, that we were all going thru rotating power outages every hour or so. He never offered any advice or help and only agreed with what we asked. As of Thursday, (the freeze started Sunday morning) Ice was starting to melt. Friday mid morning it got warm enough to bring the pool out of freeze protection. I noticed in early afternoon that the water features were off and i knew we were going to get another freeze, so i went over to the operating panel, internet was not working properly so couldnt do on ap, and turned pool back on. After about 15 seconds running, the heater started making a funny noise, water was coming out of the bottom of the heater system and it was smoking. I called our pool builder and he asked me to facetime him and turn it on. He said the heater is on so we turned it off. still water leaking from bottom. He said there is a busted pipe and told me how to drain everything but forgot to tell me to turn off whole system by flipping breakers. Well, a few hours later i went outside and hear a loud horrible noise. The pump and all was running with no water so i called him back and he told me to flip the breakers. After giving you this rundown, my husband and I are furious knowing that there are things we could have done to prevent this from day 1 when we asked him what we should do, including covering the whole operating system to protect it and drain the water. It was just for a week. It would have prevented all of this. Now the pool is completly off, busted pipe, and we hope that is all that is wrong. He hasnt' come by to check it yet. My sister has a pool and her weekly pool guy called her while she was on vacation and asked if she wanted him to cover her equipment and drain the water so it wouldnt freeze?

Great video question I have spray heads should I open the valve and let them spray doing the cold weather days
@AquanutAcademy
@AquanutAcademy 2 жыл бұрын
Really depends on the heads themselves. The type of water feature that you're talkin about. If you have a dedicated line for those sprinkler heads it would be best if you were able to drain that specific line. Running them maybe okay however you need to be aware that they could ice over

What about if you have a waterfall feature with a dedicated pump? I've drained my main pump and booster pump but i left the waterfall pump running in fear that the pipes within the waterfall rock will freeze and crack. If i had my choice i would've drained this pump as well but i didn't know if the pipes would be insulated enough by rock and mortar to not bulge. Can you share your thoughts? I live in Dallas and we have weather in the teens for short period of time but i don't like running my waterfall pump for 72 hours straight. Thank you I'm advance.

You can run the pump 24/7 forever, it will not hurt the pump. You have 2 options 1. Leave the pump on. 2. Hire a professional to winterize it.

My question is what does the water temperature need to be set at in “freeze on”? I’m in Texas in below freezing weather. I’m new to this house and the “freeze on” feature was already set. So I personally turned on the water feature so the pump would run. I’ve noticed that the freeze on automatically turns on the spa. I see that the spa temp is 50 and the heater was set at 100. Does the heater run during “freeze on” ?
@AquanutAcademy
@AquanutAcademy Жыл бұрын
Freeze protection is set to air temperature, not water temperature. Freeze protection should turn on between 42° and 37° ish. No the heater should not be running during Freeze mode.

I'm in Dallas and I've had my pool for a couple years now. Still learning about my pool. It's an inground pool. My freeze guard kicks on at 37 degrees. I noticed that my pool kept switching from pool to spa and back to pool all night. It lasted in spa mode way longer and my pool started to ice. The only water movement in my pool during the spa mode was from the water feature because it stayed on during both modes. Why does it need to switch between pool and spa? Can I stop it from switching? Also, when it was in spa mode it caused one of the door flaps where the skimmers are to freeze shut so all night I had to keep going out when it switched back to pool mode and force the flap to open.
@deniserodriguez8224
@deniserodriguez8224 6 ай бұрын
oh and I think because it kept switching modes to spa and pool... I think because it lasted in Spa mode longer it cause my pool to start icing over. My pool got to 29 degrees.
@AquanutAcademy
@AquanutAcademy 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for the question. You may need a pro to look at it. However, it does need to switch back and forth because water needs to run in both sets of pips. No need to worry if ice starts to form on the surface of the pool. It's the pips we need to think about.

In north Texas with an above ground pool. We’ve kept the pump running and the water is flowing through fine (for now), however the return jets aren’t pointed up enough to move the top of the water so the top is completely froze over. Everything is glowing/moving underneath though. Think we’re ok to keep doing what we’re doing?
