As an artist, I have great difficulty pushing myself to get to work on stuff, whether it's art, animation, videos or school assignments. Drawing is definitely one of my favourite things and I hate that I still have to work around so much anxiety and self doubt. This video speaks to my soul. Now I want to rewatch all the videos you mentioned before and try out all these exercises, and I'll be doubt-free in no time. Jazza, you're my hero.

Dammit Jazza you made me cry happy tears. I'm four years late to this but I needed it. "It's not the few pieces or artworks of theirs you have seen that makes them exceptional and talented, it's the thousands that you haven't." I needed that. I really needed that. Sometimes when I look at artists whose work I love, I don't see them as people. I see them as some sort of artistic god that was born into this world with a skill set I could never attain, some divine gift that only a handful of mortals are blessed with, but that's not true, nor is it fair to them. I am sure each one of them sweat and maybe even cried over pieces that just didn't come out just right but they never gave up on their dreams - it's not fair to take that hard work and perseverance from them by assuming they just...put a pencil to paper (or stylus to screen) and draw like a 3-D printer, well, prints: line by line of flawlessness until a final product is there for everyone to see. No, they made mistakes, you're so right. Hundreds upon hundreds of mistakes but they kept going and pushed through, learned from them (or got help/direction), and became the artists they are today. So there is hope for artists out there like me who like what they do but are always feeling like what they WANT to do is just out of reach. So thanks, Jazza. Thank you for reminding me to stop being so hard on myself, and to take chances, make mistakes, and keep pushing forward. Godspeed.

I dont get why people Say the have terrible art. Art is something you make, even with just anything. "I have terrible art" or "I am terrible and no good, very bad at art" You are WRONG. Everything around you is....ART. see that chair?yeah that is ART. see that shirt you never really wore?ART. why is it called art? SIMPLE. People put their effort into something they WANT. Did you notice that Old wooden chairs have pretty designs?welp, people made those designs...see?ART. Even with writing.ITS ART.the curves of every letter that you write. Okay,Okay, people say,"I didnt even put effort into this SANIC THE HEDGEHOG™ drawing!" but. you drew it. You literally made the Graffite(is that how it's spelled?) from the pencil, touch the smooth surface of the blank peice of paper. even if it looks bad. EVERYTHING IS AN ARTWORK. EVEN YOU. YOURSELF. THE BLOOD-FILLED SKINBAG CREATURE WITH ORGANS THAT MAY OR MAY NOT BE READING THIS. you are a beautiful artwork. everyone of you.

The answer is so much simpler than this. Draw a cube, a sphere and or a cylinder. If you don't know what to draw, do that. Pick one, and shut down your mind, stop thinking, and draw your first line, then as soon as you have the first line down, start thinking again, and think really hard about how you can make this cube, box or sphere look as good as humanly possible for you. As soon as you've done that, just go ahead and draw anything, first thing that pops to mind, draw it, first idea that comes to mind, do it, don't think, just do. Fail miserably, sure, but do anyways. You were spot on in the video that the reason for this is the high expectation, but that's not all the reason, that's just one of the reasons. People very rarely don't know what to draw, people usually have something that they want to draw, they just know they can't draw it, people who are very good at drawing and know themselves capable of drawing just about anything, those people rarely find themselves wondering what to draw, they might however get bogged down a lot more in how to draw it different than last time. So, one thing you could always draw is that thing you know you want to draw and also know you can't draw, setting out to just go ahead and fail, and fail hard, that's indeed a very powerful way to start, expect failure, but try your best anyways. But there's another lurking secret problem that many people don't know about, it's this barrier of entry that gets created when you think too big and I'm not just talking "draw complicated human body, yes!" no I'm also talking "draw 30 boxes!" or "draw one face" I mean sure if you've drawn tons of faces and it's easy for you then yeah, you're thinking small, but if you haven't, then it's big, and you subconsciously know that you can't do it, you subconsciously know that you are inevitably going to fail, so expect the failure, hope for success and seek out the unknown. The unknown is a beautiful thing, because when you venture into the unknown you stop subconsciously knowing whether or not you'll fail, you can't know the unknown after all. Try drawing the exact same thing in a different way using different techniques, what's gonna happen? No one knows. That's where improvement really happens. Some people might need to think so small that they only set out to draw "3 lines" or "triangle" (yes, I'M GONNA DRAW A MOTHERFUCKING TRIANGLE BITCHES! STOP ME IF YOU CAN!) as small as it takes to get them to just start. Although while there is wisdom is this, there's more wisdom in that the reason they are not drawing is because they are too busy thinking, stop thinking and just fucking do it, that's all it really takes.

When I don't know what to draw I think "Noun, Verb, Adjectives" For example Dice run green cartoony, so a green cartoony dice running, draw that and then do another one like "girl swimming chibi dyed" or a chibi girl with dyed hair and she's swimming. You can even add "with". Chibi dyed hair gi l is swimming WITH her dog.

CiaoJazza I've turned 50 and suddenly finally started drawing. The book about right hemisphere drawing I always wanted to get, I suddenly discovered in my bookshelf where it has been hiding the last 17(!!) years! OK, I started, by the book. And my four test drawings were much too good!!! I couldn't believe what I had drawn! Yeyyey!! I was over the moon, bragging, showing off ... - but where to go from here? I ONLY wanted to LEARN drawing. NO other goals. But how to top that initial zero to 100 "progress"? I'm actually going the opposite direction! I'd discovered I can do perfect circles. I can't anymore. And finally I am totally paralised. I buy scetchbook after scetchbook, so I don't have to waste the first one on my crises, but with each new one, I'm still CONFRONTED WITH MYSELF the moment I want to begin. That's the hardest! Even doodling scribbling etc is impossible. BUTBUTBUT ... =) I found a little remedy: »»NEWSPAPERS«« Ha-haa! ha--ha-hàaa! On newspapers the scribbling works again. Exercises too. The copying of pictures still won't go. There I'm still stuck stuckstuck ... But honestly, I specially buy newspapers now, with few advertisements. And old cheap softback books: tiptop for exercising. It's as if it contains s.one else's story I'm not confronted with ME so much ...

Thanks Jazza... You've actually inspired me to start drawing again. I used to draw a lot from like 12-16 but I stopped because I hated how it looked close to the same as when I started & how no matter how many other people my age I saw that were drawing for just as long it would always be better than mine. So I'm now 23 & I only started drawing again the day before last. I started getting into the story time animators & saw you collaborating so I checked out your channel. I have been obsessed since my birthday, which was about a week ago, especially your character design sessions. I kept watching your creative process & kept thinking "I would've done it this way" (not to say you're doing anything wrong, I'm just saying that, because I'm a different person with different life experience & different preferences, I would take the same idea & execute it in a way that makes an entirely different piece). Then I noticed how you simplify things like hair in ways I never did before & it just clicked. I never liked my art because I tried so hard to conform to the styles of my favorite anime & manga. I love how it feels to draw that style of body type, eyes & clothing but proportions & hair were absolutely killing me. Plus, much of the anime style shading relies on color or a special sticky stuff that you're supposed to cut to shape & stick on the piece that I couldn't buy & that means that when I tried to use what I learned in art class (cross-hatching & such) I felt like a failure because it looked so different than what I wanted. When I watch you I realized that none of that matters. My style can be mine & completely unique. If I wanna use cross hatching or draw my girls hands in a way that they don't look like they're all professional pianists, I CAN. You do so many styles & I've seen you borrow a bit from your usual comic book style when doing something outside of it & ya know what? It always looks amazing. I decided to try the certain things you do like drawing thicker locks of hair & doing proportions that make sense to me. I love her! She's no where near like yours but... she's not just my idea, she's a drawing & I love the way it came out. & ya know what the best part is? the icing on the cake? After I doodled my first character in years I realized something. I'm not trying to impress anyone anymore. I used to show my family everything I drew & fish for approval where I knew none would come. But that time, I drew just because I wanted to see what I was thinking about live on the paper. That's it. I just wanted the girl I saw in my head to be a real drawing. I did end up showing my boyfriend & he said it was great. That he had no idea I could do something like that. Then, I wanted to draw again yesterday but didn't know what so I watched one of your design sessions & made a game. I watched up till you had your parameters set by the twitch chat & paused. I drew my own half-spider whore & she's beautiful. I even made her trans which actually started as "These breasts just don't suit this body" but I LOVE this character now just how she is! I'm glad I wasn't able to draw breasts in that moment because my mythical transgender spider whore is amazing. I feel much better about myself because I can & do draw again. So thank you. Thank you for being the push that got this stone rolling again. I've gathered quite a bit of moss in these 8 years but I'm just glad to have some momentum. I love you Jazza.

What I do is look around and find three objects. Then I combine them. Say I see a pair of scissors, a tissue box, and a toy car. I would draw a tissue box driving a car and getting attacked by scissors. Or I ask my brother for two adjectives and a noun. He might say giant, scary, orange. So that's what I'd draw. That's just how I do it.
