What to Expect on a Viking Ocean Cruise | My Midlife Story

Viking Ocean cruises are my favorite, and I've cruised on more than 35 cruises, including top-rank luxury cruise lines. I love the food, decor, service, excursions, and the absence of casinos, children, and those dreaded art auctions. It's very much a 'thinking person's" cruise. Their informative lectures and presentations are top-notch. And having a ship historian and a Norse museum on board is a real plus. The next cruise is in December to Hawaii. Very excited to spend holiday on-board Viking.

The beauty of Viking, unless you are going to book a suite, you can book the cheapest cabin level, have access to a balcony and all of the specialty dining and all options. You have later priority for booking excursions and dining reservations but it is not an issue on most cruises. I love Viking.

So if you wanted to go and have a drink in the bar, outside of lunch or dinner, you would need to pay for it if it was alcoholic, yes?

The answer is yes, you would have to pay. If you are a reasonably big drinker you could purchase a drinks package which might work out cheaper but my wife and I found just buying the odd drink more cost effective (drinks are relatively cheap on Viking).

There are 2 routes you can go with alcoholic beverages. You can get the Silver Spirits package if you want to try the more premium alcohols, or if you're a big drinker. I believe they raised their price to $25 a day per person. A 15 day cruise, you would end up spending $750 as both people in the room have to purchase it. If you don't want to go this route you can purchase drinks ala carte. Your average drink on a Viking cruise is around $9 which is quite cheap compared to other cruise lines.

Did not enjoy the constant classical music .. or the lack of entertainment… sometimes we don’t just want to listen to lectures ( they get repetitive). Some more light hearted entertainment would be great. There are lots of positives though. Apart from the huge number of the one nationality. Just my opinion
