Movement? Many of us have been doing this our whole lives. Many of us never fell into the bigger, newer, faster keeping up with the Jonses mentality. To those who see through the so called instagram ready lifestyle I salute you. I'm 65 and it's always been how I live yet many much youngr people in my community do the same. The fun is in finding those great deals and saving our money for the important things in life.

The most important aspect about the "Buy Nothing" and Freecycle groups is that it keeps furniture and other salvageable items from ending up in the landfill. Boom!🎯

The next thing to solve AND REPORT ON is how many college students throw everything away at the end of the school year before they return home. As someone who lives in a University town it is appalling (and sad) how much "trash" they throw out every May. I've seen TV's, household furniture, desks, etc., all in good shape being tossed out. It's disrespectful to the planet, the community (who has to haul it away), and to the parents who have paid for it all.

Preach! I live in a uni town as well, and work in a building that is mixed with residential above. End of the year apartments get cleared and it's all trashed. I have found laptops I was able to salvage parts from sometimes, and I've gotten a basically brand new exercise bike. They built it backwards so it was almost unusable but I reassembled it and works great. My Dad uses it in the winter when he can't bike outside.

I don't know how much of this stuff was bought by parents. I'm sure some was but when I was an undergrad (many years ago), most of the stuff that got thrown out more on graduation than routine summers, was garage sale castoffs that were sent off with students rather than going to the curb straightaway. Some of it was stuff that students had trash picked or thrifted just to use while at school.

I participated in this when I was downsizing. I liked the concept and being able to pass along items in help others in need. Here's what I didn’t like - the moderators of the group became bullies. They would troll postings and conversations. On one occasion actually accusing me of giving an item to an individual without posting it online first. This wasn’t the situation and the moderator had not been part of the conversation until the accusation came. I noticed the same moderator was doing the same sort of thing to others in the group. Also trying to get people banned from the group for not following“the rules“. BTW, the rules seem to change without notice. Also, other members began messaging me saying that certain people who were picking up my stuff, were really just using it to start their own resale business.(sending pics of the business). Frankly, I wasn’t concerned about that. I figured individuals doing that had to answer for their own consciences, and not to me. Dealing with that minutia took away the joy that I originally experienced in this movement.

@@Shilohsparadise a lot of people fix it up and make it so it's usable still I don't see anything wrong with that. It keeps it out of the landfill is the primary intention.

@@malindaallinson5749 Exactly. They're filling a function most of us won't do. If they can make a buck or two, more power to them. I've dabbled in this myself, not at dumps but sometimes I'd see something like a high end air cleaner for a few dollars at a church rummage sale and then sell it for $60 or something. It's too much time and work for most people.
