I was wondering if you had any suggestions for certifications and/or trainings that would be valuable for someone wanting to pursue a career in event planning / coordinating? At the moment I am pursing my PMP certification, and Six sigma for learning more about process improvements.

I have done a short video on what I believe wedding planners need to know, and I will create another one. While I happen to have a four year degree in hospitality, and then planning, it is what I have learned in the trenches that has helped me the most. I believe that community learning is more valuable than anything. Online courses - mine or someone else's - are vital because you need to see what people are actually doing in the field and not in the ivory tower. Certifications, don't hurt you, but I don't think that they are ever going to make you more successful. If you're going to learn about anything, learn about business management and the law - you can apply those principles to your business.

TWO QUESTIONS: so what realistic will a average wedding planner make from one client? Does it depend on location for the wedding planning to make more?

The problem is that there's no such thing as "average" because markets differ so greatly. Luxury wedding planners and celebrity wedding planners will have a starting price point that is about six figures and higher. That's for each client. Many wedding planners will make $15,000 - $25,000 per client, while beginners will make $7500 +/- for each event.

$5000 for planner's services and time. It does not guarantee you a certain number of coordinators. Many people run 2-person teams, but others are solo.
