What to Know Before a Milsim West Event | Airsoft Tips & Advice

Rucks: Alice and Molle military surplus rucks are great value. Pack heavy things close to your back and high, with lightweight things to the "outside" of the pack and low. If you use a Molle ruck, take the time to learn how to adjust the pads and straps on the frame. Once packed, squeeze and cinch everything as tight as you can and get your ruck compact. Sleep: bring a thick civilian or surplus sleeping mat. A woobie and tarp/poncho fit almost all situations. If the weather will get below 40 degrees bring a sleeping bag/system with a bivy/poncho. Food: peanut butter is ounce for ounce very compact and calorie dense. MREs are heavy and bulky. Mountain house or other civilian rations are more practical. Make sure whatever your bring has sodium and protein. Clothes: always be comfortably cold. I say this because in the Army the bozos who wore all their warming layers and were warm would heat cat every time we did a movement. Good rule of thumb is light warming layer over underwear, uniform, and then a wet weather layer that you can take on and off. Pack an extra charge of uniform, and more underwear/socks than you think you'll use. Water: at least one canteen and electrolyte fluid on your person, keep rest of water in ruck/assualt pack. CamelBaks are great, but the can burst, are difficult to clean, and interfere with the wear of a backpack/sitting in a vehicle of any kind. Best to be kept in a backpack. Medical: only take what you know how to use. Bring your prescription meds in those keychain pods, so that way no one will steal them and it's very compact and hard to lose. Give your emergency contact to a trusted friend/leader. Bring antifungal foot powder and a tooth brush/floss kit + deodorant. Do not ever use Neosporin, as most of the population is allergic to the neomycin in it. Bring bacitracin ointment instead and bandaids/gauze. Tylenol is better than ibuprofen for acute injuries because the delayed inflammation that comes with NSAIDs prohibits proper healing, and ibuprofen is tough on your stomach and kidneys, which will already be under stress. Also don't drink alcohol. Alert a trusted friend/leader to any health conditions you may have that may cause issues (diabetes, POTS, anxiety, heart disease, etc.) Eye pro: bring a crap ton of antifog wipes and dual pane eye pro! Always bring a back up or two. Boots: bring an extra pair of boots every time. If it's going to rain, gortex boots. Never wear unbroken in boots to an op. Danner, Oakley, Garmont, Rocky, Altama, Nike, and Bates are good brands. It's okay to buy boots used as long as the stitching and tread is undamaged. Source: Army medic. Have you or anyone you know ever been to One Sheperd? I've been looking in to it myself. From the little bit of the backstory i know, it appears to be a milsim from before there was milsim. The guy that started it founded it back in the 80s. They don't use airsoft though, they use real AR's using the MILES system, which i think it supposed to wirelessly track "kills" based on the sensors that you wear on your kit. Anyway, they have "semesters" and they do the events almost all year round and each event is like a week long or something. Its really a dedicated training experience rather than a singular event. Its supposed to be a leadership building experience too, but not like hardcore drill instructors yelling at you all day or anything.

G-Day Lane, what advice do you have for HPA with MILSIM ?👍🏼

It’s something you’ll have to take into account for your kit and the type of event. If you’re at an event that requires you to ruck in your sustainment gear a huge tank on your back would be very uncomfortable. 13ci tanks (or other similarly small tanks) would be preferable in that scenario but you’ll have to have multiple. If there’s no rucking and you can go back to your car, bring whatever tank you can carry
