What to Look out for when Buying a Used Motorcycle

When I bought my 2002 FZ1, back in 2016, it was 14 years old at the time, had less than 4k miles and still had the original tires on it. I had no idea what I was doing and couldn't even test ride because I didn't know how. Never been on a bike before. Man, I beat the crap outta that bike learning to ride - dropped multiple times, hit by a truck and one lowside crash (low speed) on a curve 😂 I just kept fixing everything myself and eventually got pretty good at it. Still commute on her almost every day so she's around 60k miles now. Not sure why I shared all that but maybe it will help a new rider. My dream bike is the ZX14 and the one you have is absolutely gorgeous. Thanks for the video 👍

@@sonics747 Yea, I was definitely aware of the danger from so much power while trying to learn. I'm also 6'4" and was 32 years old at the time so I'm sure that played a role 😄

Would you mind doing a video on what you feel it’s appropriate to move up to a bike with more power

I know it's not in video format, however I started on an '88 yamaha virago 250. Did my learning on that. Was yearning for more power after 6 months of city riding (that bike was great for learning fundamental techniques, however wouldn't reach highway speeds). Next was an '01 zr7s. A dream for highway cruising and quite comfortable. Did not like city riding with that bike. It lacked passing power on the highway (only a 5 speed) which was my indicator for a faster bike. Then I had two 2000 zx12r's both awesome for losing a liscence. Highway and reat tire destroyer. Next was a 2010 harley ultra classic, a 2007 fz6, and a 2009 kawasaki concours (all three of which I still have). Drastically different riding styles, but different tools for different jobs makes clarity easier to obtain. Comfort, enough motor for all escape situations, maneuverability, and low speed control were my main frame of reference for skill level required to upgrade size. Honestly your first bike should be for learning on i.e. abusing. Hope this helps new riders! Safe riding folks!

The knocking at Idle, I think it's most Kawasaki's. I have the same on my Z1000sx. Was worried about it for a few weeks but then the bike still drives and pull lovely. Just ignored if after 1500 miles :). Bike also has a very small cough at idle but again I think this is the after market exhausts being swapped out and no retune. Again no issue outside of idle.

I just picked one up with 20K miles. I know it was ridden hard by the kid that owned it but it's very clean. My only concern is that it has aftermarket pipes and I don't see a Power Commander. If I crack the throttle very fast from idle (while in neutral) it will rev up then drop under idle and stumble. I'm sure I could make it stall out if I did it just right. Any insight?

First clue is they changed exhaust and did mods.

I think that we should let people find out for themselves that motorcycles are fun DESPITE being expensive, impractical, cold and uncomfortable. This is partly BECAUSE of the inherent risk, mitigated by police roadcraft techniques, ABS brakes, traction control, self inflating vests etc

I've been wanting to buy a ZZR1400 for a while now and have seen a very tidy 2015 ZZR1400 for sale. However, for some reason, I think I want the Performance Sport version but this particular one is the standard model. Do you have any thoughts on the two versions and should I really hold out for "the one"?

Honestly there isn't really much difference between them, apart from the sound they make. Sure the ohlins shock and bubble windshield are nice to have, but certainly not necessary. No extra electronic gizmos over the standard model either. The experience between the two will be very similar, you wouldn't be missing out on much by getting the standard model, some people on the channel have commented that they actually prefer the standard model over the performance sport. If you've found a nice example of the ZZR1400 that's well priced, I'd go for it 👍. I bought the performance sport as that was the only 1400 my local dealership had in the showroom, if it was a standard model they had instead, I wouldn't of hesitated getting that one. I just got one with almost 20K miles and an aftermarket exhaust, but I don't think it has a tune. If I rev it fast (not even high) just a quick snap, it will drop below idle and stumble. I'm pretty sure I could make it stall out if I rev it higher. Anyone have any advice? I would be very grateful as I can't have a professional look at it quite yet and it's really bugging me. I rode it once and everything else seems great.

Run some fuel system cleaner through it if you're still having issues

@@whatanamazingusername7962 Thanks, I just ran some good fresh gas through it and now it seems to be all good now. I'll throw some K5 in it anyway. To be honest, I completely forgot about that issue, so I don't think it's still a problem but I'll check next time I ride... I've been riding the hell out of it, way more than my other bike cause it's way more street able. it's so close to the perfect bike that it's almost frustrating- I'm pretty sure if it was 100 pounds lighter it would be the best bike ever made. I'm really loving it.

I have a feeling those big motors can take more than what most people can throw at them, and you can find these in particular adult owned and well taken care of. I guess I'll find out because we just got one with 20K miles from a young guy. Aftermarket exhaust and no tune.
