I used north sails 3L wet weather long johns and jacket and it poured down here in New Zealand. Was good to have that gear on!

Wow! If it's good enough for sailors, it must be good enough for us here in NZ. It's often like being on a sailboat in the middle of the ocean living in NZ with our weather patterns!

Nicely made video again Gypsy. As an experienced hiker and a bloke, I learnt something new this video. Not applicable to me, but still a learning experience. I'll leave it up to you to work out what it was. On another note... I love my OR Helium II Jacket and own more than one. 170grams and very water resistant. I couldn't recommend it enough. So much of my hiking gear has made it into everyday life, although it can be a bit expensive... I think I have about $400 of Icebreaker merino undies. Tough guy ay? Anyhoo, as you were, hike on. Hike Eat Sleep Repeat.(HESR)

Thanks Paris! I'd love to try to OR Helium II at some point, have heard some really great things about it!

Thank you for this video. I’d be interested in knowing the fibre content of the various clothing items, and the properties you’re looking for when you choose a particular item.

Wow that's a whole other video I think Joy! I'll confess, when I first started hiking I had absolutely no idea about the different types of fabric and only operated by one rule. NO COTTON. You're probably already aware of the well-known saying that COTTON KILLS in the backcountry, so I always made sure to opt for fabrics that would wick moisture away from my skin wherever possible. Having said that, my first real adventure was on Te Araroa, so I knew that my clothing would have to stand up to two major factors: 1) Sun Exposure and 2) Durability. I ended up hiking 1,800km of Te Araroa wearing basically just a pair of Kathmandu Trailhead Shorts (which are still going strong to this day) and Columbia PFG long-sleeved shirt with just a sports bra and undies underneath. I primarily hike a lot over the summer months, and on Te Araroa I only had to worry about the relatively mild North Island weather. This meant that I almost never needed to hike with baselayers. However, this strategy changed completely when I was putting together my South Island gear because I knew I was likely to be at higher elevations for longer, and subject to bad weather more often. I would suggest you take a detailed look through my gear lists at longwhitegypsy.com/gear-lists to get an idea of a good place to start with your clothing layers.

If you're hiking in very cold weather, do you ever prefer mittens over gloves, or do you always stick with gloves?
@LongWhiteGypsy3 жыл бұрын
Great question John! I'll confess I've not tried mittens, so I suppose my natural preference has always been towards gloves. And the RAB powerstretch gloves I use are AMAZING, so I'm reluctant to give them up just now. I'm thinking, however, that I may invest in a pair of lightweight waterproof mittens to put over the top (similar to those used by motorcyclists) for when I'm hiking in the rain.

Hi I would be interested to see a NZ food selection from you. Most of the videos around are American or suggest home dehydration. The first is not available and the latter is not possible for overseas trampers so they, like me, are at the whim of supermarkets and prepackaged outdoor food... Your thoughts for an 8 or 9 day trip?
@LongWhiteGypsy3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rod! Thanks so much for visiting the channel and dropping me a comment. I would be happy to accommodate your needs, and in fact a 'supermarket tour' video is something I've been considering putting together. Is that something you would find helpful? Are you struggling more with what kinds of food are available and on offer in NZ, or the actual task of figuring out what quantities and calories etc. you may need on trail? I'd love it if you could flick me an email longwhitegypsy@gmail.com with some more information and we can chat about what you would find helpful. Thanks!

Could you make some more videos on non great walks?
@LongWhiteGypsy3 жыл бұрын
Yep, there's at least one more trip video coming in the near future, so stay tuned for that. Did you have something in mind? Happy to take suggestions! P.S. The reason why all the Great Walks content... I'm preparing to hike 4 Great Walks over the summer season. I've also noticed a lot of beginners and amateurs asking heaps of questions about Great Walks on the tramping forums, so hoping to answer some of the more common ones on the channel over the next few months 👍
