Communication plays a major role when you're trying to convey what you want to the hairstylist. However, I visit a hair salon and I told the female hairstylist that I wanted her to trim, just my ends. I keep my hair below my shoulder blades, I noticed that this hairstylist kept chatting with the lady next to me who asked for a short-cut. Before I could say anything my hairstylist divided my hair and proceeded to cut 8 inches of my hair 😮 I jumped out of the chair and said out loud "What the ^**^" She then got nervous as the manager came over & asked what was the problem. I told her what happened, she apologized and told me that she could fix it, but I was so upset I just left. A friend of mine who's a great hairstylist made it look better by giving me long layers. Having said that, sometimes even when you communicate what you want you don't get what you ask for, therefore, be very precise and keep your eyes on what your hairstylist is doing.

I haven't been to a salon in years, but I was under the impression that most people these days actually come in and show the stylist pictures on their cell phone of what they'd like, maybe first try to find front, side and back pictures and maybe even diagrams of the cuts or style (?) What's better than pictures to get the conversation started? There's so much on the internet they could copy to show the stylist.

Your videos are so gr8! Using some of your professional videos, I've tried the 45° cuts on the sides of my hair seen in your tutorial videos. But I have double vision and can't see and coordinate well behind my ears/in the back of my head. So, my results are spotty and get coveted up by curly hair and picking and product. Background I have half-and-half hair - meaning half curly and half straight. It's a bit straighter on the left side, and at 73, maybe a quarter gray strands, especially around my ears. And, I have cowlicks everywhere - in the middle of the front, at the crown, and I believe on the sides as well. LSS I am retired on a fixed income with limited funds and fast growing hair. So, I really need the information you gave in this video. I take pictures and photos to my stylists, but they do not listen. Sadly, even at the beauty college I tracked 20 miles to on the bus, they could not blend the top, sides and back into a short, spikey pixie style, a la the cute short, spiky Halle Barrie pixie styles. I'm at my wits end because as much as I've tried, I can't effectively cut my own hair, and I refuse to go bald or near bald as a solution to this problem. Part of the problem is my hair grows so fast, by the time my $ & time partner together, my hair is nearly at the bottom of my chin and over my collars preventing, it seems, the stylists from getting into their minds' eyes the style I both describe and need them to produce. I know what it should look like 5-7 days after the cut, and I know this is a hair style type that both fits my needs, lifestyle, and my hair type, and my long /narrow face. But since pandemic restrictions were lifted, I can not find anyone who will cut a feminine version of what I describe and of the pictures I show to them on my cell that of what I need. Various problems occur with various stylists, not the least of which is the unevenness of the cut all around. It's not blended thoroughly. I don't allow razors on my hair because of frizz issues; and must be cut while wet. Stylists act like they've never heard of what I'm requesting. Go figure! Do you have any thoughts and suggestions of what I can do differently to get the haircut outcome I seek? Thx!

I've been a hairstylist for 25 years. No offense, but it sounds to me that you have unrealistic expectations about what your hair will and won't do.
