Trip story:
The Route: Kargil to Leh
Our journey begins in Kargil. From here, the road to Leh winds through dramatic mountain passes, offering stunning vistas at every turn. The route, although challenging due to its high altitude but, rewards travelers with unparalleled natural beauty.
En route, we visited Mulbek Statue: Iconic Symbol of Buddhism. The Statue is a 30-foot tall rock carving of Maitreya Buddha. Carved into a natural rock face, the statue depicts Maitreya in a seated posture.
Moving further along the journey, we ascend Namik La Pass, a high-altitude pass that offers panoramic views of snow-capped peaks and winding valleys. The air becomes noticeably thinner here, heightening the sense of adventure and remoteness.
En route, we visit Lamayuru Monastery, one of the oldest and largest monasteries in Ladakh.
That day we took lunch break at Khalsi, and rice Thali in a Punjabi dhaba.
Our next stop was Alchi Monastery which is renowned for its stunning wall paintings, considered some of the oldest and most beautifully preserved in Ladakh. This monastery is located on the banks of the Indus River, approximately 70 kilometers west of Leh.
A unique phenomenon awaits us at Magnetic Hill, It’s an amazing experience to witness vehicles seemingly moving uphill on their own.
Moving further along the journey we seen Sangam, basically the confluence of the Indus River, known locally as the Sindhu, and the Zanskar River,
That day our last visited spot was Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, which is located approximately 25 kilometers from Leh, on the Leh-Kargil highway (NH1).
That day Our journey culminated in Leh, the bustling heart of Ladakh and a hub of Tibetan Buddhist culture. We reached at our stay Mongyul House , near Leh mal road, Nestled at an altitude of over 11,000 feet, the stay offers a blend of ancient traditions and modern amenities against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks.
Witnessing the birthday celebrations of His Holiness 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso at his residence was indeed a remarkable and profound experience.
One can keep 1 day for leh sightseeing as it ensures better acclimatization as well. Perched atop a hill overlooking the Leh town, the palace is a striking example of Tibetan architecture.
Just few meters above the palace, you can visit tsemo castle .
Shanti stupa is also located nearby leh city, Shanti Stupa, meaning "Peace Pagoda," was built to promote world peace and harmony.
The Hall of Fame in Leh is a museum established by the Indian Army to honor the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in various Indo-Pak wars. Located on the Leh-Kargil road, approximately 4 kilometers from Leh city, it is one of the top attractions in Ladakh and a significant site for paying respects to the brave soldiers of India.
When traveling back from Hanle to Leh, that is our 12 th day of the trip, we visited Thiksey Monastery and the Druk Padma Karpo School (popularly known as Rancho School).
