I live in Sweden and it gets really cold here. Feet and hands are very exposed. Last winter it was -15 degrees and with a good merino baselayer underneath I could simply just use the Castelli Alpha Flight ROS Jacket. It is crazy how light and warm that jacket is due to the Polartec Alpha insulation it has. Big fan. When it is -15 you really need to size up your winter boots two or three size and use them with extra merino socks. I use the Lake MXZ 303 from 5 degrees and below. Gloves: merino liner gloves and winter lobster gloves. Bibs: insulated winter bibs. Head: thermal cap. Winter riding is all about clothing, studded tyres and riding in an easy pace 🙂

Awesome video David. I also wear Castelli kit, I have both summer& fall weather kits. Side note Castelli sized for Americans, I had to size up one from medium to large which for a regular American fits like a medium.

Great video. I own basically 4 seasons of Castelli clothing. From Aero 4 and Race 6 in summer to thermo winter bib, Alfa Ros 2 jacket (extremely warm) Spectacalo gloves and Estremo shoe covers. However! There is only one brand that is better in my opinion for winter and that is a British company called Spatz Wear. Their neoprene apparel is second to none for waterproofing your feet. I can ride in slush and ice on roads or gravel and never get cold or wet feet. Also their development of air pocket technology in base layers is outstanding, try them!

A bit off, but an essential piece of winter kit for me is Campagnolo mechanical shifters that you can actually operate in thicker gloves.

Castelli really nailed with their Perfetto RoS line down to the gloves. Even during these rainy\windy rides of late I use a base layer+PERFETTO RoS Convertible and if it stops raining I have to take off the cheap Squadra jacket or at least unzip it because its amazingly hot. I bought the Puffy Jacket and I only use it around the house with a shirt and shorts!!

I'd venture to say that you wouldn't see much change out of £1,000.00, just for two complete outfits! I'll stick to Siroko and Ali express Chinese gear and narrowed it down to a good number of items that have proved very hard wearing at a fraction of the cost of Castelli! 😁😁😁

I buy used stuff. Lots of people shy away from used bibtights, but I've picked up 2 thermal castelli pairs for about £25 each. I hate to say it, but their stuff is fantastic. I just wish A: I could afford it new. B: I didn't have to buy XL sizes.

Castelli is not quite up to a high quality standard. It's It's more like a upper mid range gear. I have order a few gabbas with quality mistakes. All of my Castelli stuff has frails in the threads. But the classic style and some times the fit is nice.

Nice video David, but doesn't solve the problem I have with cold weather. If I wear a windproof jacket and baselayer so that I'm neutral or slightly chilly while riding, then by the time I reach the cafe stop I'm soaked in sweat and sit there shivering. I've already tried Castelli Alpha ROS and Perfetto jackets. It's almost better not to wear anything windproof and be a bit cold on the ride, but remain more or less dry. Any advice?

I have a similar problem I'm afraid. I love being toasty warm for a while but then stop and unlike Andy Windsor realise you're sweating like being in the tropics! I've never known any so called breathable fabric to help! 🥵🥵🥵

Maybe try a brynje thermo fish net baselayer instead of standard merino . I have found they make a difference, when stopping im less likely to freeze , and help keep water off skin and keep skin and layers separated

most western militaries use a primarily polypropylene base layer for its ability to let perspiration pass through it. What marketing calls wick-ability. next layer is some type dense weave with lots of air gaps, like polartec fleece or natural wool. Over that is a wind blocker and if needed a water blocker. Just adjust the warmth of the dense layer as needed, or get a wind-blocking layer that’s partially insulated also.
@edlazda3245
@edlazda3245 11 ай бұрын
@@FoxtrottangoabcI've got one of those, and it's certainly better than most baselayers.
@edlazda3245
@edlazda3245 11 ай бұрын
@@cityslacker6221for me, it seems to be the wind blocking layer that's the problem -- I like the way it keeps the wind out, but not how it keeps the sweat in.

Cold weather cycling is as much about wind protection as it is about heat retention. For the former, there is nothing better than Gore’s Windstopper and Infinium (which incorporates Windstopper) fabrics regardless of which brand of cycling clothing maker it is. Look for it, buy it, wear it.

David, you're missing one crucial piece of the puzzle for male riders: windproof underwear. Below around 3-4C, I wear a pair of undershorts that have a special panel around the nether bits; they're made specific for cycling, so they have proper construction through the crotch and don't interfere (much) with the bum-to-chamois interface. No idea where I got them (like 25-30 years ago), but they make riding and running in very low temps much more bearable.
@cycleoflife565
@cycleoflife565 11 ай бұрын
I noticed that some of the tights on offer that have additional wind protection for the knees tend to neglect the nether regions. I have a pair of Craft underwear that I’ve had for decades that are specifically designed with wind blocking panels for that area.
