I have an American Standard toilet that came with the house that I bought 12 years ago and if you do a pee, it only needs about 1/2 gallon minimum to do a flush. I’ve seen a whole variety of toilets, some rather brand new, in the many hotels I have stayed in while traveling. Some of those toilets, even brand new, you might need a gallon or a gallon or a gallon and half to get a pee to flush own. I’ve learned a lot about various toilets from all the places of lodging I have stayed at and if I ever had to buy a new toilet, I have learned you got to know what to look for when you need to replace a toilet. They are not all the same and some flush lot better than others.

You should do another test to see which toilet flushes out a long pipe run best because at least one toilet is usually put at the farthest end of the main sewer pipe so when it flushes, it can help to clear out anything left behind from the sinks and other fixtures that run into the line downstream. They came up with these standards of only 1.23 gallons of water per flush to give plumbers job security when they have to come and clear everyone's drains all of the time because toilets don't put enough water down to keep the pipes clear.

Stupid 1.6 gal flush clogs up rural lines that have to run 100 feet to the sewer, that's why I put in an antique toilet with the BIG tank, never had to call roto rooter since I put that one it. There's NO WAY 1.6 gallons let alone 1.2 is going to carry a pile and paper down 8 feet, laterally 10 feet, 90 degree turn and 100 feet down the driveway to the sewer under the road, it needs at least TWICE that amount of water or more. I pay for my water by the 1,000 gallons and never USED 1,000 gallons in a month. I have a Speed Queen washer that actually FILLS the tub to the top for an actual wash, bought that and threw away a 2 year old Whirlpool Washer that thought 3" of water in the tub was enough to WASH two full sized blankets, are they serious??? Nobody even wanted the Whirlpool washer, it sat by the curb for a week, even put it up on FB market place free, tells you something huh! I have the American Standard Champion 4 in my house. Had them for about 4 years now and they are the 1.28 GPF variant (I think). Haven't had one clog yet. Only difference I've noticed relative to the 1.6 GPF variant my parents had in their house (also never clogged over something like 10 years) is I have to hold the flush lever just a split second longer on the newer ones. Both excellent toilets that never clog. Far better than than many of the older water wasters I've used. So good that my parents had to have a plunger in their old house, but with the Champion 4 in their new one, they pretty much forgot where they put it - it was just never needed. I don't even own a plunger - have never needed it. And no, I don't need multiple flushes. One is enough 99% of the time. Can't even remember the last time I needed more than one. And the few times I did need more than one, it was only two. And that's not that expensive of a toilet - about $200 at my local Lowe's (elongated, chair height).
@HobbyOrganist Жыл бұрын
Guarantee that if your toilet was 100+ feet of horizontal line under your driveway to get to the sewer in the street you'd have clogs, there's no way that small amount of water is going to float or carry away a pile and paper all that distance. After paying $175 for Roto rooter to come out each time, I put in an antique toilet with a BIG tank that does a REAL flush and never had to call Roto rooter again
@ccoder4953 Жыл бұрын
@@HobbyOrganist Not been a problem in my experience. The guest house at my parents place (which we lived in for quite awhile while we built the main house) was at least 100 feet from the septic tank, never had a problem. At my house, I probably have 30-40 feet between the house and the septic tank. Closest toilet is maybe another 20 feet inside the house, farthest is maybe 60 feet. Never had a problem. If I were guessing, I'd say you probably don't have the right amount of slope. Both too much and too little can cause a problem - too little is obvious enough, but too much can cause liquids to separate, leaving solids behind, clogging the pipe.

Trutrek I hear you. The last American Standard toilet I installed in my home is a ghost toilet it's always refilling up all night And day. I'm going to replace the ugly bowl and tank. I cracked the last tank in the master bathroom so I will remove the cracked tank and use the front tank from the other bathroom. I've purchased and replaced a number of toilets in my different homes thru the years. Early on I used American Standard mostly. When I needed to replace a couple of toilets in my prior house, I bought a Champion and a Lexington, both one-piece. I liked their Champion line, however the original Champions had a poorly designed and constructed flush tower. Flushed strong but leaked like crazy after a year or so. I wrote the company and they sent me a redesigned one at no charge. Did not last that much longer, maybe two-plus years before the familiar bowl-filling sound would fill the air every hour or so. I ended up getting a Toto for that bathroom, and another Toto for a third bathroom in the same house. The Lexington was a poor flushing model, no jet or suction at all. In our current home, I replaced all three toilets with Toto's. A bit more expensive but extremely reliable.

I put in a tall Deer Valley round-front toilet a year ago for $150.00. It’s only a 1.2 gallon flush so it refills in a heartbeat, but the reason I bought it was because the front of the tank is concave. It hasn’t plugged and it seems like the bowl is made from Teflon. I’d put one in our other bathroom too but they don’t make it in bone color. I put in 27 ADA American Standard toilets at a senior high-rise. A couple things I learned about selecting a toilet when I bought one last year: 1) Pay close attention to the "trap/gooseneck" cast into the rear..... the point where the water can flow over and go down the drain is the highest the water level in the bowl will ever be. You cannot adjust the bowl water level by maxxing the level in the tank. The toilet I bought leaves very little water in the bowl. 2) Pay attention to the warranty - specifically regarding the porcelain finish. I "cheaped out", bought a budget model, and the finish above the water line is irrevocably stained at less than one year old. Bleach not only didn't clean it, it actually dissolved the glossy finish and left it "matte". Spend the money, buy a better quality than you think you need.

We also have an American Standard Optum Vormax, installed in 2015. @rupe53 Жыл бұрын
@@KevinBenecke ... I did say fine for the most part. On 90% of problem jobs the issue is likely pipe that doesn't have the right pitch / slope. Nice testing methods! Would love to see more. American Standard have different lines with different tech. Wondering if we got a dud with our Vormax model.
@lynx93tk Жыл бұрын
I have a Vormax which I installed in 2015. It rinses very well, but many times we have to flush it twice because "something"" didn't go down the first time, which of course is a waste of water.
@bt5252 Жыл бұрын
@@lynx93tk Rinsing wasn’t our biggest problem. Ours got to the point where it would flush slowly and incompletely like the trap was clogged even when it wasn’t. Got American Standard to replace with a different model recently.
@lynx93tk Жыл бұрын
@@bt5252 Ours has plugged several times. If you hold the handle down and exhaust all of the water in the tank, it empties the passageway to the jet, and then you have to flush 5 times to re-prime it. There are some very odd parts like the 2 flapper assemblies and the harness that controls them. There are too many parts that can fail and are most likely expensive to replace. If any one of them decides to fail, then the Vormax is out the door. You did well by replacing your toilet with something more reliable.
@bt5252 Жыл бұрын
@@lynx93tk good to know it wasn’t just ours. Yes it’s a very complicated system. AS sent all new internals for me to replace and it only stopped the problem of the tank leaking into the bowl. Still would get into a funk where it seems to need priming every couple days. New model with single 3” flapper is much better but still finicky with how long you have to hold down the lever for a full flush. Need to hold for 1s or it just aborts the flush part way. Not a fan of their toilets. Our cheap Kohler in the other bathroom is pretty flawless. That’s saying something since I have had QC problems with other Kohler products.

Retired plumber with over 40 years experience here. I just replaced my kohler toilet with an American Standard. I truly believe you could stop up a kohler toilet with diarrhea. I wouldn’t have another kohler product if it was given to me.. That’s a fact.

I'm currently easily clogging up an AS bowl. Shore house has a Kohler, which had no problems with my logs, so I'm going to find out what model it is, and get another one of those.

I had a Kohler Well-worth toilet and it plugged all the time. 👎 I had an expensive Crane toilet before that it plugged all the time. I have an American Standard Champion 4 max that I installed July 2015. It’s only plugged once in all these years! I will say once in a while we have to flush twice but as far as I’m concerned it’s the best!

The one thing that is not talked about much, American standards used to be better than they are now...at least for the replacement parts, and especially in california which has the super low gallow flush requirements. I got one of their 'super flush' champion style toilets back in 2004 and with the original flush mechanism you flush and the bowl was just suddenly empty. Then after years, the seals for that started leaking, so I bought the replacement...it didnt work quite as well, but still worked ok, then years later that also started leaking down into the bowl, so the third set of american standard replacement flush mechanism....sucks. If anything is fully sunk, it goes in one flush, but if there is anything not sunk it takes multiple flushes. I went to just having a empty bucket in that bathroom that if it gets too annoying, I just fill it up in the tub and pour it down to get it to flush. I called them and they admitted it is due to the replacement parts being for the even lower flow toilets and not doing the larger flush volumes that the older toilets need. So at some point I may have to just get a new toilet just due to the official replacement toilet parts not working right.

I agree 100% . American standard Flush valve needs to be changed every year and its a terrible design. My kohler easily lasts 3 to 4 years.

Just curious about the flush technology in each and the classification of each .. seems 1.6 gal flush is a bit more than 1.28G so the American Standard had an unfair advantage,, Lets see it in a fair fight ??

@@bluesguitar1973 there is none. I bought the American Standard toilet that was clog proof but that's a lie. And you cannot get parts for it and no universal filler valve and flapper will work. It's not so much the valve but it's a ghost toilet with the original parts installed, the worst 230 dollars I spent. I want a toilet that I can buy parts for it and home Depot don't carry the parts for Kohler or American Standard. I do like the American Standard toilet we have at work with the 4112 tank they use standard replacement parts and when you flush these toilets they flush twice. Keeps the bowl clean. 73

Should you hold the flush lever a little longer? I have the American Standard and I have to hold the lever for a couple of seconds before releasing it.
@gorak9000 Жыл бұрын
It does make a difference on most modern toilets. You push and release quickly for a #1 flush, and push and hold until the tank is empty for a #2. That said, they didn't do the most important test, just how much toilet paper will each one take. In my experience, you use just a little too much paper, and most toilets these days clog up in the trap. Probably because the traps aren't glazed, and the TP gets stuck to the rough porcelain there.
