My favourites are certainly schooners. Two masts, a little more girth than a sloop, yet still quick and agile. Plus, bermuda rigging is downright sexy))

Can confirm that sloops are the best to navigate with. Sea of Thieves has taught me that

Several years ago I lived on a sailboat for around 4 months and sailed quite a bit. Bermuda rigged sloops are amazing to sail and quite easy to manage with a small crew. That fact, along with their shallow drafts, definitely explains why they liked them so much.

Maybe in the future! The short answer (for the Europeans operating in the Caribbean during the age) is cedar or oak for the hull and keel and pine for framing and masts.

the problem with capturing a major ship is how to move it even if you capture it , you got a sloop with 25 people on board and need 10 to move your sloop home and the ship of the line needs 80-100 to move it just the mass of one gun 32 pounder gun might unbalance your sloop

Awesome video!! Did pirates have to exchange Spanish cobs or pieces of eight for different currency?
@ThePiratesPort
@ThePiratesPort 4 жыл бұрын
Nope! The spanish dollar or peso was well accepted as the first international currency (much like the USD today) because of their uniform standards. In fact, the spanish dollar was what the US dollar was based upon and was considered legal tender in the United States all the way up until 1857!

two and 3 masted Schooners look the coolest to me. and with a few top sails that's the classic look i like.but i'd take a sloop, just need to armor up a Santa Cruz 50 or 70 and start my raiding parties then sail off into the sunset

And (this depends on the sloop though) a sloop can be operated by one person (well at least the modern ones)

Speed of a sailing vessel is generally a function of the length of their water line. I don't quite understand how pirates in a small sloop could catch up to and engage a larger longer ship. My 25 foot sloop can't catch a 35 footer.
@ThePiratesPort
@ThePiratesPort 2 жыл бұрын
Well, assuming they were chasing them from behind and the conditions were perfect the other ship would have been able to outrun them. Marine growth on a hull would take a toll on a ships speed and pirates would careen whenever possible. They would also attack with chain shot and that would have stopped a ship dead in the water.

Do pirates paint their ship? What color they use?
@ThePiratesPort
@ThePiratesPort 4 жыл бұрын
Different navies used different color schemes for their ships so it's POSSIBLE pirates may have changed the ships colors depending on where they were operating but most likely they would not bother. Ships were modified in different ways (to make them more effective as a fighting platform) but pirates cared little for the aesthetic appearances. That being said, if the pirates had a particular target in mind and they thought painting their ship would allow them a better chance of capturing it it's totally possible. Aside from that the only area they might paint would have been the bottom (below the waterline) to try and discourage marine growth like barnacles.

Was it common for pirates to write the name of their ship on the stern?
@chrisduitsman2918
@chrisduitsman2918 2 жыл бұрын
Usually, ships had thin sheets of copper on the part of their hull that was below the waterline to discourage marine growth.
@ThePiratesPort
@ThePiratesPort 2 жыл бұрын
they didnt start doing this until the 1760's (decades after the golden age of piracy had ended) and only Naval ships could afford it for quite a long time.

Some Scottish pirate's like my clan used ship's called Birlinn, which is a descendent ship of the Viking long ship's which was more faster then the bulkey big ship's back in those day's especially in turbulent storm's. Hence why it's my favourite pirate ship, as I would pick it over any other ship if I was a pirate. My clan attacked any ship even if they were heavily armed.
