Elon will build the DoD as many Starships as they need at a reasonable profit.
@chrissschwehr5911Ай бұрын
This is an entirely possible scenario where SpaceX builds a fleet of Starships and boosters for military use only but maintains exclusive use of Boca Chica for his project to land on and colonize Mars....The profits from such a contract will help speed up the Moon and Mars project development while Space Force will become a TRUE Space Force with the ability to project power anywhere on earth, the Moon and expand our presence in interplanetary space greatly.

A DOD takeover of Starship? I don't think so. What might happen is that the DOD might buy a number of ships and boosters and have SpaceX operate them under contract on an on-call basis. Basically when the phone rings SpaceX would have a set time to prepare a ship for launch and have the ship in orbit a set number of hours after the payload arrives at the launch site. Part of that contract might include the DOD facilitating and funding SpaceX' building of an extra launch pad and tower at an existing launch site, which SpaceX could use but which the DOD would have priority access to. What also could happen is a DOD specific ship variant. Say a disposeable variant that is more akin to a current upper stage and payload fairing. SpaceX engineers might not like it but if the DOD pays . . .

Probably already using the shuttle launch site at Vandenberg.
@echomande4395Ай бұрын
@@RobertAllen-e4i They are not. That pad, SLC-6, was used for Delta IV and is currently being modified by SpaceX for Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy launches. This will allow more frequent and heavy launches for those boosters there. Remember that for Starship, SpaceX not only has to build an entire tower setup but also has to get Superheavy boosters to the location (Ships can be delivered from orbit). While there is a dock close enough to SLC-6 for boosters to be brought by sea, SpaceX does not currently have a RoRo ship big enough for Superheavy. I also don't see SpaceX building a third star factory at Vandenberg just yet. The logical choice for SpaceX and the US government would be to build an extra launch site at the Cape where a factory is already present if inactive. However I don't see them starting this until after Starship starts doing revenue missions.

Starship's payload capacity only applies to putting things into space orbit - not transporting the payload back to earth. Even if it had significant surface-to-surface payload capacity, it would be horrendously expensive compared to more traditional transportation methods e.g. cargo aircraft. And, you'd need the logistics at the landing site to service and relaunch Starship or transport it back to Texas where it would be refurbished for its next mission. If it's a one way mission, the cost is even more prohibitive.
@MrMichaelFire2 ай бұрын
You're argument assumes there wouldn't be anymore building of support infrastructure for Starship landings around the world. Once Starship and the ground base technologies are perfected enough, Musk can sell individual finished rockets and plans for individual launch facilities to Space Force, just like other companies sell items to the military. Musk is already doing this with the military version of Starlink. Also, Musk's refusal to supply Ukraine with Starlink was atrocious. He said he didn't want Starlink to be used for offensive purposes. The only offensive actions in that war are from Russia. Ukraine's actions are 100% defensive, and Musk's inability to see that shows that he may not be smart in all areas as we'd like to believe. Denying Starlink to Ukraine was a huge boost to tyrants and tyranny, and a huge punch to the face to liberty, freedom, and especially to the tens of thousands of innocent Ukrainian citizens maliciously targeted and killed by Putin and his forces. I have the same beef with Trump and many on the right. I support most of what both men are trying to do, but I vehemently disagree with their lack of vision and their weaknesses when it comes to defending freedom and liberty where it must be defended. Ukraine is doing all the heavy lifting interm of actually boots on the ground, innovation, and determination against a tyrant and regime that will not give in. Just like Hitler in WWll, Putin could have been stopped earlier on, in Georgia, for almost nothing. He could have been stopped for a little more in Crimea. Now, it's costing the world hundreds of billions of dollars, and tens of thousands of Ukrainian military and innocent civilian lives. If Putin isn't stopped now, next time it will cost an order of magnitude more, both in dollars and lives, but in this case, it will actually cost American lives, because Putin's next stop will be against NATO allies, requiring us to send troops to defend them, all because modern day Neville Chamberlain clones lack the vision and determination to defense of the freedom, liberty and the rights of a people who are fully committed their fight, but just need help leveling the playing field against a massively ⁶larger brut of a tyrant and nation. Again, while I fully support most of what Musk, Trump, and most of the Republicans are doing domestically and internationally, I vehemently disagree with their feckless failure to stand up and support Ukraine's fight againist a truely heartless monster.
