Hi I just finished it and I think it’s really good the plot twist was predictable and honestly a little dull but I liked during the attack how the music got more dramatic and fast almost like adrenaline and the rest of the story calm and slow showing the emotion of Jess and the flow of the story. The ambient noises were great as usual. Once again another fine work somnium

Great story. I honestly saw it heading in a different direction. A windy(go) direction . I could've sworn that Frank was gonna be the creature. Happy to be wrong. As for the music, as amazing as anything else you've featured on here. I really dig your musical style. If it didn't scare me a little, I might use some of it at bedtime. As great as it is, it somehow unnerves me. Perfect for your storytelling, but a bit jarring. Otherwise incredible. Lol but true.

I’m assuming this creature is sentient, after taking the time to heal and think over the experience, it probably concluded that the initial shot was a misunderstanding after seeing the the humans hunt deer for food, like of course they’d shoot him since he looks like their food.

Chief I’m going to be real honest with you, I’m struggling to maintain interest in this story, I’m just about halfway while writing this. Everyone is talking well about the story in the comments so I’ll continue. The weirdness of the descriptions, actions and thoughts of Jess are destroying any chance of me actually getting into this story. This feels like someone writing about an experience they’ve never been on and never really talked to anyone about. The scope glint part for example, the chances of the deer actually responding to that is crazy, and then her solution to to remove it?? And wait until she’s 25 years away to do it? Then she shoots it in the leg and that actually takes it down? AND THEN proceeds to approach and kill it with a knife??? Bucks have huge antlers which are pointy, you think it won’t fight back? It’ll just let you kill it slowly like that? You can see how thrown off this has put me, the rest of this story seems fine but the opening has just killed it for me. You’re saying you’re rewriting it and I think I’ll stop for now and give it a try when that’s done. Maybe I’m just crazy today and that’s why it’s getting to me so bad

Great story, it’s a very nice twist on the tired Wendigo/monster in the woods base. Especially love the descriptions of the struggle between the creature and Jess, as well as the fact that the creature’s violence was only led on by self preservation, and it seemed to forgive Jess. Really nice to see a story with a good, positive, clear ending! Thanks for making it
@WarpStims
@WarpStims 11 ай бұрын
Nice story! A little constructive criticism, I'd talk to some actual hunters though for future reference, I kept getting taken out of the story by these little things that make it a lot less believable. 20 yards isn't a hard shot on a deer with a rifle, scope or not, for example. When I was a young kid, 30 yards with a bow was a doable distance even for me, and that's with a projectile that shoots a lot less straight and powerfully than a hunting rifle should. If you're writing to an audience who might know about the subject, it's a good idea to get some first hand knowledge!
@averagescruffy258
@averagescruffy258 11 ай бұрын
Like a couple of others have said, my only real critique is the technical inaccuracies. Iron sights can be accurate much farther than you'd think, a higher generally field dresses a kill before packing it out (removing the guts so the best doesn't spoil), and a .50 cal revolver wouldn't be as useful as a .44 magnum as a woods gun. Otherwise, great story! I really enjoyed it

@@mysterymastermind175 well the deer head seems more like what is normally considered a wendi at least in modern stuff, even tho they dont have that at all. However it reminds me way more of a Leshy which is actually Slavic and not Native American. It's a forest spirit that resides over woodlands and hunting which fits. It also isn't hostile unless angered or provoked, which also fits. It did follow her but that didn't necessarily mean hostile and leshy aren't shy of humans and tend to be tricksters. It really seems to be a mixed bag and is just a spirit that becomes hostile when provoked. Wendi are way more malicious.

yESS winter horror!!!! i have been loving these types of stories recently with the change of the season, hyped to listen!! edit: it hit SO hard. LOVED IT. these characters were so likable and of course the delivery made them even more so! i thought it was great that jess told frank everything that happened to her with complete honesty, and that he didn’t try to brush off his wife; he believed her without question. (adorable detail that he knew she was too good of a shot to fire that many times and knew she was in trouble. 💕) jess’ nightmare made me feel genuinely sad, and super relieved when we found out that’s all it was. i like the ambiguity of the creature, as well as the main character’s insight of it not being inherently hostile unless provoked. my personal take is that it’s some kind of forest deity rather than a wendigo-i feel like it was following and watching her to see what she did with the buck, like if she would prepare it to eat and give the rest back to the earth, if that makes sense? it was only so sadistic when she shot it because it knew she didn’t NEED another kill, but rather just WANTED one. after she ultimately bested it in combat, she had its respect so long as she didn’t fail the test by taking another shot when it showed itself. i think it only revealed itself at the end as a reminder of what lessons her son needs to learn on his first hunt, so he wouldn’t repeat her mistake. it respects jess and doesn’t want to see harm come to her family. at least, that’s my personal interpretation of the story! whatever it is or what it means, it was a great listen!!!

Winter horror has a unique charm. I think it's because winter is a hostile environment to us humans as an originally tropical species. Without clothes, we start needing warming at room temperature, the last degrees over freezing are even deadly, and it only gets worse faster from there. Humans can only operate so long in the cold, no matter how good their coveringss, for a limited time without warm shelter. It puts an element of impending doom on top of whatever the horror adversary is, especially if it attacks at the warm sanctuary and forces the human out. There is also the sound muffling capabilities of fresh snow, making it very easy to get snuck up on, and impossible to conceal your trail.

@@Mortabluntwinter horror is the COOLEST (pun intended) and i totally agree with your thoughts on why it hits so hard. we just weren’t built for those environments-and stripped of utilities to survive it, we’re capital F- Fucked! 😭 by the way, if you haven’t already seen it, i think you’d REALLY dig jacob geller’s video “fear of cold” because it captures and explores the dread you’re describing perfectly!!

This is one of those ‘take no more than you need’ story lessons in my mind. Of a creature, meant to follow and protect those of ‘its kind’ from anyone or anything meant to harm it. Some people are saying that the creature had forgiven Jess, and that may be true, however, here's my darker theory: The creature clearly wanted to make Jess feel extreme pain, maybe, somehow it saw her visions of her future family as she was having them and later decided that it would wait, and kill them instead. As always, I love your readings, DS! Its also really cool horror writers are starting to make realistic women with actual skill and reason.

Naw the auther basically speaks through the character when her and frank see it again with the entire "I shot it so it attacked me thing". That and it even states the fire in the large deers eyes died down when she lowered the gun again signifying it is based on provocation. This seems based more on a leshy which is a spirit that resides over woodlands and hunting. However if provoked it can be extremely bad. Leshy is also talked as if it could be a god itself so that could explain it watching over her. She did prove to be a very skilled hunter after all.

I love these types of endings! It's almost like the author starts writing a second storie but in your mind. Is the Wendigo Type Thing still angry at her? Is that why it came to her new place? To provoke her or her kids to take a shot at it so it can finally take revenge? Or did she just imagine the buck and (just) has some form of PTSD from her encounter? We will never know and that is what I like about that ending. Endless possibilities opened up with just that last sentence. Anyways, awesome story telling as always! Keep on doing what your doing! Your the best at it by a long shot!💪

My personal theory is that the creature just got angry at her for shooting it and now it's kind of watching her and making sure she doesn't make the same mistake again that's why the embers are dim now it wants to let her know that it's not going to hurt her unless she does something

SPOILERS For those wondering, a largely overlooked aspect of Wendigo lore is avarice or greed. Most people overlook these things in favor of cannibalism and/or starvation. When Jess shot the wendigo, she was looking to take (much) more than she already needed, hence why (on top of being shot first), the wendigo attacked her. Now, I feel I should point out that in typical wendigo legends, it's the greedy that turn into wendigoes, not simply hunted by them. But given that while there is no concrete wendigo canon, just a lot overlap and concensus, its not too outlandish to take some liberties with a wendigo story, like the fact that it started out as a particularly large deer, which isn't standard fare for a wendigo, that and they're usually wandering with a kill on sight attitude. But don't let that detract from the fact that this a phenomenal story, and Dark did a wonderful job telling it ❤

The ending makes me feel like a "what happens when two Predators meet?" type of story Like the thing regarding her in a sign of respect but is also now leary of and watching her. Another Predator in it's hunting grounds. The Wendigo gave me the impression it only just then realized she was hunting in it's territory by following her tracks. Her husband said they've seen it before. So it possible this the first time it saw them. She's also correct it didn't attack until she shot it.

As a hunter myself this gave me goosebumps!!! Lovely narrating and the story was so well rounded! I have hunted since the age of 6 with my dad, he was a professional hunter and made me proud with every kill he was proud of all the things he could teach me and he was a wonderful tracker. He loved the animals and would sometimes call off a kill because he was taken by the beauty of the animals and their way of interacting with one another so we would just sit and look at them until they walked off. I loved him so much and I will always cherish these memories.

She didn't kill it out of necessity. She just killed a whole buck and hadn't started consuming it yet but because that deer was twice as big she became avarice and had to have it. In all of her greed didn't she once think that it was so strange that a deer so big would follow her around when naturally animals would flee when they smell humans? I am not against hunting!
