In _Unfinished Tales_ Tolkien wrote that Éomer's esteem of Théodred was second only to his esteem for Théoden. Wormtongue tried to set them against each other but their bond was too strong for him to affect it.

Karl Urban delivered his lines so perfectly in The Two Towers, especially when Gimli, Aragorn and Legolas first meet him. His bitterness toward what has happened to him, his men, and his king is tempered by signs of humanity and compassion when he gives the two horses to those three. His scowling face and menacing gaze makes him tough and fearsome in appearance, yet he is an even-tempered man. Though Elrond looks down at the courage and honor of men, between Eomer, Theoden, Aragorn and Faramir, those four show the most nobility, courage, wisdom and sympathy towards others. Such well-written characters both in the books and movies.

Theoden has been my favorite, in large part because of his redemption arc. To go from having a mind poisoned by Grima to valiantly leading a seemingly hopeless charge at Pelennor Fields makes him stand out in my mind. Theoden, along with Faramir and Eowyn, are arguably my favorite LOTR characters.

Eomer has always been one of my favorite characters. That scene where he and Gimli are sparring words and then Legolas draws his bow is delicious. And then we see him show his more noble and honorable side after Aragorn asks about the hobbits. Liked him even more after I played the Battle For Middle Earth 2 game, the rohirim really put in the work.

The scene with him and Gimli in the book is funny, where he calls Gimli to him after Sauron's defeat and they are in Minas Tirith. He asks Gimli if he brought his axe. He says no and then Éomer tells him that now that he's seen her (among all the dignitaries visiting), he doesn't think Galadriel is the most beautiful person ever. Gimli replies by saying he's going to fetch his axe now.

@@montymont4192 Yeah, in some ways Amazon using the Fourth Age would have been better as you could go forward enough that none of the canon characters of LotR would still be alive and any story would be fresh. The only problem is that by then elves and dwarves will likely be fading from the picture and the enemies of the Men of the West would mostly be Men of the East or Men of the South rather than orcs, trolls, etc. You'd be stuck with a story that might look more like European politics and warfare circa 1350. Still you would have a lot more creative freedom in the Fourth Age without getting all the fanboys at their keyboards regarding how dare you tinker with the canon timeline, lore, or characters.

So Eowyn and Eomer end up marrying cousins (princess Lothíriel would be Faramir's cousin). That's got to be convenient when you're deciding which side of the family to spend the holidays with.

To me, Eomer is an example of what a real man should be. He is honorable and answers when he is called to suppport his ally Gondor. He is someone who was raised to put the welfare of others before his own, which is the way a true king should behave. I wish there were more modern men who were like him. Honor Above All.

Great video as always! Just a heads up about the pronunciation of Elfwine (and Holdwine, Déorwine, and Folcwine while we're at it): The "-wine" part isn't pronounced as a single syllable (like the alcoholic beverage), but as two separate short syllables - "wi-neh" - pretty much like "winner" without the "r". It's derived from Old English word for "friend" - "wine" (in two syllables). So it's "Elf-wi-neh", "Hold-wi-neh", etc., not "Elf-wine", "Hold-wine", and so on. I see (or rather, hear) this mistake made a lot.

Aragorn is a dunedain and so he lives longer than most men. He's like 80 years old in the lord of the rings. When he was young man and Theoden was just a boy, Aragorn fought with Thengel under a fake name to keep his identity as heir to gondor a secret

Um, there's a few things in the background that are not quite right. While Tolkien was indeed inspired by both the Prose Edda and the Poetic Edda, and was hugely influenced by Béowulf, we should not make the mistake of collecting them as the same type of thing. The Edda were from Iceland, and constitute a record of the rich mythology of the Norse folk. Tolkien viewed them with envious eyes, for we Anglo-Saxons had had our oral tradition virtually destroyed by the Normans. Consequently, Béowulf is the *only* surviving Anglo-Saxon mythology. Tolkien based the Rohirrim on the Anglo-Saxons (as best he could). The Rohirrim most assuredly do not have a connection to Norse mythology, except insofar as the two worlds coexisted uneasily and collided often. Tolkien's dwarves owe more to the Norse mythology than do any other of the free peoples of Middle Earth.

Still, due to the kinship of the Saxons and the Northmen, many similarities exist between the two cultures, so some inspiration could reasonably be drawn from one and applied to the other.

@sophiejones3554 Жыл бұрын
Uhhhh... you know that part is canon accurate right? Well, Galadriel has seen a lot of stuff: but seeing and learning aren't the same. Galadriel took a long time to become the mature, regal, wise queen we see her as in LotR. The part about her being a bit of an arrogant jerk back in the day is entirely lore accurate. A lot of the rest of the show isn't, but that part is.

Is Rohan an offshoot of Numinor in terms of blood? Or are they just people that were always in Middle earth?
@juancarlosreyes5138
@juancarlosreyes5138 Жыл бұрын
I believe they are from somewhere else, they are not numernoran some of them probably married people from families of Gondor but their primary blood would be from the north closer to the shire which i why believe they know of the hobbits but came to Rohan after they helped Gondor and were give the lands of Rohan as a reward and to for a pact of eternal and perpetual alliance. Close allies and kingdoms but not from the same bloodlines, but they do intermingle a bit as time passes. If that makes sense to you.

@@mightymulatto3000 I understood the story to be that they saw a great army coming to threaten Gondor and Eorl got a messenger asking for aid from the Steward Cirion. He knew Gondor falling would be catastrophic and went to help. After the battle was won, Cirion knowing Gondor strength was fading and his forces were stretched thin and Eorl people needed space and fields, hey having an ally kingdom with strong ties would be helpful and we can strengthen our borders and retreat a bit without conceding territory to our enemies. It was a smart move by the Cirion to offer the land to Eorl and his people for helping, a good place for Eorl to strengthen his people and establish a kingdom.
