In this video:
Although you might assume that being made to wear a stupid costume, be mocked, and act like an idiot for the entertainment of fatuous rulers would be a job nobody would want- like the position of Groom of the Stool (a job which initially consisted of directly supplying the necessaries to facilitate a good and clean bowel movement to the King, as well as to monitor said fecal matter and make dietary recommendations based on what you saw there)- the position of court jester was actually an enviable one due to it involving spending so much time with those in power. And as you were often putting them in good humor and otherwise making them happy, it was a position that came with a whole slew of perks. So what was life actually like as a court jester?

I love that videos like this exist on KZbin. In what other time could you have a random thought about a subject from the past, then search and find a 15 min. mini, well researched and detailed documentary about it. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel so grateful to live in this era, and grateful for content creators, like those in charge of this channel. ❤️

@@katherinetutschek4757 he was a court jester to four consecutive polish kings in the XVIth century, famous for his sharp, relentless wit he was not afraid to use on his monarchs. His jokes were mostly commentary to political decisions which he used to pass palatable advice to the king - think something like medieval Stephen Colbert or John Olivier. Incredibly intelligent and well versed in politics, some believe him to be the grey eminence behind polish golden age. He passed into European culture as a placeholder for depressed intellectual hiding behind a comedic facade. That's why he is usually depicted in a ridiculous jester outfit but in a scholar setup and with an exhausted and concerned expression.
