The Green Book was a critical guide for African-Americans struggling to travel safely in the Jim Crow era. This 360 degree video explores its complicated legacy.
This film offers a revealing view of the Green Book era as told through Ben’s Chili Bowl, a black-owned restaurant in Washington, and reminds us that the humiliations heaped upon African-Americans during that time period.
Sandra Butler-Truesdale, born in the capital in the 1930s, references an often-forgotten trauma - and one of the conceptual underpinnings of the Jim Crow era - when she recalls that Negroes who shopped in major stores were not allowed to try on clothing before they bought it. Store owners at the time offered a variety of racist rationales, including that Negroes were insufficiently clean. At bottom, the practice reflected the irrational belief that anything coming in contact with African-American skin - including clothing, silverware or bed linens - was contaminated by blackness, rendering it unfit for use by whites.

To be fair, I downloaded this on my VR helmet expecting it to be an in-the-passenger-seat roots like experience. In retrospect I feel kind of bait & switched. This whole experience was just a small handful of old folk telling vague stories of oppression. I have honestly learned more about the struggle by watching the animated satirical cartoon series The Boondocks than I did watching this. Also, its association with Sundance is an automatic guilt by association these days.

I am an elderly white man who was dating a nice black woman who was intelligent, a good conversationalist, and I enjoyed doing things with her. Onenight we were going to the movies . As we were going into the theater, a white woman with her husband tuerned to her husband, and said, "Do you see THAT!!!"------eg, a white man with a black woman. NONE of their business. I was enraged. She didn;t see it, and i kept quiet so as not to ruin her night. 2 weeks later I told her about it. I said that was 1 night. 1 time, and I still feel the rage. I said HOW do you live with this violation every day? I can't imagine how this affects a persons soul. I still feel that rage. She said I just do. When you hear someone talk about black rage, or that racism is still entrenched, BELIEVE IT. I've experienced what my black brothers have--- for 1 Dsy, and I still feel the rage. Can you grasp how that affects a person every day? I can't. I would slaughter every cop in sight. Why they don't escapes me.

I have come to the conclusion that the often godly response (in love) to these evil behaviors will likely present a situation where former darker skinned people from this 'element', will be Christ's prominent 'people' in position in His presence for eternity. Anyone who does not act in love, He will say, "I NEVER knew You", while they say how much they've done for Him. They will not be with us. "Us" will not have to deal with such stupidity that references skin color as valuable in any context. *It is interesting that the people of lower India, Ethiopia, etc, are considered Caucasian anthropologically, yet are some of the darkest skinned anywhere. Our family had a very bright young 16 year from Ethiopia live with us under the Student Exchange student program. He is considered Caucasian, with dark skin. Isn't that interesting. This makes me so sad and it reminds you how far we have come and how far we haven’t come. It saddens me that so many people in life don’t have compassion or love for other human beings. No one should ever have to feel this way and for all those out there who still have to go through this or who have to hear these words that cut you down I’m so sorry. I hope one day Mr. Kings words will ring true and and that all will be equal it took so much bravery just to live Day to day. These stories are so important for young people to hear and know the hate that existed in America as a day to day normal it just breaks my heart.

Because it ends the video with a lie, that many black people are still being killed at random by white police. There were like 20-30 unarmed black deaths by police in 2020 with a population of ~46 million black people. Unarmed white people were killed in higher numbers. We could discuss relative proportions and argue about additional policing in black neighbourhoods but the suggestion that this is a widespread problem and black dudes can't travel in the U.S. is absolute nonsense. The number one cause of death for black men, according to the CDC, from birth to age 44 is other black men. For every other race it's something like heart disease. Was this caused by policies like Jim Crow or redlining? Probably, doesn't mean it's not true. This video provides valuable historical insight but perpetuates factually incorrect sentiments that are widely held.

I never believed this until I saw it for myself. I saw a dark black friend of mine and her black daughter stopped by an Asian policewoman for "matching a description exactly", just walking on the sidewalk down to a local shop, not even one block from her home. And I was stopped once for "suspicious behavior", which I've never been accused of before, with that same dark black friend in the car. I don't get pulled over unless I've got a tail light out, and she's gotten "pulled over" just walking down the street. I suggest everybody tint their car's windows so cops can't see what color of people are in the car, but of course we shouldn't have to.

I know we have a problem with systemic racism against black folks in Canada cause the incarceration rate amongst black folks is about 335/100,000, which is double the national incarceration rate. In the U.S. the incarceration rate for black folks is 2,300/100,000.. Somewhere beyond heartbreaking to think about..

As of current, you cannot enjoy the true 360 degrees experience without using Google Cardboard or other VR headsets, as the video takes quite a while to be completely processed. However, once KZbin has finished processing the video, you will be able to move the camera angle by dragging your cursor on the YT play window on your PC/laptop, and by moving your smartphone around with the video in full screen mode. To see how the function would normally work, look up "Lions 360°" on KZbin, and try it for yourself.

Today s no different. Try to navigate our many college campus locations. My Black students ask me where is a safe area to go to off-campus. Truthfully; they must be careful in all the surrounding towns where bias and racial tension still live. We just experienced Zoom Bombing of a Black Student Organization; It was threatening, racially motivated, and hateful, it was illegal. Perhaps we need a campus handbook like the Green Book in the colors of each university; in order to provide safe environments for all of our students.

Horses by law could number no more than 20 in a boxcar. With sufficient water and hay for the journey. If no horses were present and without renewing soiled hay and water any number of white sailors or soldiers could be pushed in. They were traveling 4th Class. Persons of color traveled using boxcars as 5th Class. Atop boxcars in all weather and subject to red-hot coal sparks and choking coal smoke from a locomotive engine. Train brakemen traveling over boxcars to apply or release manual braking could not be delayed or obstructed. The penalty that the 5th Class risked was being beaten with a wood tool handle while kicked or thrown off a moving boxcar. On longer rides both 4th and 5th Class were allowed to die from thirst, injury, etc. There were 6th Class passengers but they only traveled locked in chain and under armed guard. Per court orders. Most USA citizens were 3rd Class. In boxcars with their boxed freight, livestock, with a hole in the floor for waste disposal. 3rd Class carried aboard all refreshment. 2nt Class were the lower upper class. In coach wood seats, sold food and water, heated by a coal stove and the iron red glow was their sole lighting after sunset. Usually attended by the conductor. A toilet compartment was hole in the floor and a basket of dry corn cobs. 2nt class could purchase candy, pies, publications, tobacco, spirits and more from vendors. Who were also 2nt Class but had purchased a business permit to sell their wares.

Being a tourists is thought of as rude to a lot of cultures. That is why I haven't traveled much in my life. But I've found the same bad travelers luck from home with my keys, shopping on the internet with my debit card, and visiting local coffee shops.

That’s how we know you’re ignorant about that because while it’s still pretty segregated many white people live in the same poor areas as black people. White people also travel through here all the time and they’re just fine.

..Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. -John 14:6 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. -Acts 16:31 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. -John 3:16 Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. -Matthew 3:2 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. -Revelation 22:14-16

There are still problems left over from that era, but let's not deny all of the progress that's been made from the civil rights movement. Now whenever there's some violent injustice, we hear about it, write about it, make videos and documentaries. That's because people care now, but it has the side-effect of making it seem like black people are dying left and right from police, and that's not true. Racist violence is actually "news" now, rather than just something that happens all the time.

Crappy video effects and story line. Tamir has nothing to do with the green book era and should be used as a lesson the children should not be pulling out guns that look any part real and pointing them at other people or police. SMH. It is horrible that the Ms Rice lost her son, but she bears some of the responsibility.
