The Great Game between Russia and Britain dragged Afghanistan into a proxy war over 100 years ago, and it's never been the same since. So really, the British Empire started this. But really, things didn't truly fall apart until AFTER the Russians left in 1989, and the country collapsed into civil war. By the time NATO arrived in 2002, the native Afghans had reduced their own country to rubble.
