Man this one hit home for me, -literally lmao. Living in a small town by a lake and a ski resort since birth, I can say that almost every aspect has changed. Tourism in the summer makes driving hell and all the retired rich folk moving in has made all the property prices skyrocket, forcing the working class out and putting so many local businesses out of business with no workers. Sure it sounds like the locals re just trying to keep this secret haven to themselves, but this town isn’t made to support this many people and it shows. The sad thing is, it was beautiful and it still is, but all the people moving in to “Escape the troubling city life” are destroying this place. Loved this one, keep up the good work Mainly Facts! I hope you have a good day.

I feel for the guy who lost everything when the storage unit was sold. I've gone through a similar thing, but I had all my stuff in a family friend's basement. He passed away and no one told me until -after- the funeral, when the house was already emptied out and all my stuff was thrown away. Everything I owned except for my clothes. The most painful thing to lose was my first teddybear and little trinkets given to me as a child. Since then, I am overly sentimental about everything and I have so many things in storage that I can't have in my apartment at the moment due to space. I just.. can't get rid of anything that has meaning to me anymore.

About story 8, that’s why our local Salvation Army just shut down. Good Will down the street looks stripped bare and only seems to have trash or broken items. It’s sad because people struggling have fewer and fewer places they can go for stuff.

The Retro-gaming market have very much been hit by stuff like this. Resellers, Scalpers, "Market Speculation". It's horrid. I am still an active collector, but every game I am after these days is terribly expensive. Sometimes I get lucky on Online auctions, but even there the re-sellers swarm in packs, so you always have to wait with your bids until the last 5 seconds, which is horribly unfun. I am lucky enough to have enough money that I can usually afford what I want to buy, but I miss the days when it was less expensive.

Retro gaming prices have been increased due what is essentially a massive scam, Karl Jobst did a nice video explaining what happened there around a year ago.

Tiktok. I LOVED old tiktok when it was considered cringy and people had to hide it to avoid being made fun of. It was very communal. People were just having fun making silly dance videos and everyone was so kind to eachother because we all knew we were being “cringy”. nothing was over 15 seconds because that was the limit. It also had very few ads or sponsors and creators were making content because they genuinely loved making it. Now it’s people making videos to sponser buisness and ads every 3 videos. Also most videos are over a minute and I don’t have the attention span for that. I found myself scrolling for hours on old tiktok and really enjoying the love everyone put into there stuff. Now it’s capitalist hell hole of nothing but sponsored crap and videos made for profit instead of actual love. I guess every social media platform was like this at some point because early KZbin was kinda the same way but at least KZbinrs stick to loving there content and I’m sure some tiktokers do too but it’s hard to believe that when they are all promoting tiktok shop left and right. Ugh bring me back to the cringe it was way better.

Driving. Now you can't escape traffic in þe US or Canada unless you want to make a full day to do basic þings like grocery shopping. Similarly, home ownership. Unless you're born into wealþ, good luck finding a home you can pay off over 30 years. 3:50 -- AirBnB didn't ruin þe real estate market anywhere, it was already ruined. All it did was exasperate preexisting problem resulting from NIMBYism. A study done across Portugal found AirBnB was so much of a minor variable in housing prices, some cities were becoming *more* affordable despite its presence. What was found to be þe largest variable was supply-side elasticity. Turns out building more housing makes it cheaper.

For story 4 regarding craft fairs, I’ve also seen a lot of complaints about dropshipping. Basically, they buy up a bunch of cheap items from Wish or Alibaba or wherever and sell them as their own product. It’s also an issue at conventions, where MLMs likely wouldn’t be found due to there not really being anything they have to sell to the nerds and whatnot, dropshippers have been selling their cheap stuff and pushing out people selling their handmade geeky goods.
@impishrebel5969 Жыл бұрын
And it gives people who aren't in the know an unrealistic expectation of how much hand made goods should be going for, and it's a major reason why I won't sell fine lacework crochet anymore. They can invent a machine that does crochet if they want to buy cheap crochet (which is physically impossible due to the nature of the craft, there's whole youtube videos about the physics why you can't machine make crochet.) Hilariously rich people have a higher appreciation for handiwork than the average chuckle eff, thanks to all the bespoke things they buy in the first place.
@bloodmooncomics2249 Жыл бұрын
I also miss craft fairs. A lot of them are MLMs. It is bad when there is only two tables of crafts and the rest are MLMs and some of them are even the same ones. I saw two women give each other side eye because they were both the same one and bought tables across from each other. A few local places that set up craft fairs have now set up rules of no MLMs. Some argue that they are not MLMs but a 'small business'.

From what I read once Uber and other rideshare services cause problems as well, because they are essentially unregulated taxi services. With taxis the local governments can control how many taxis are around because they give out licences. Because you don't need any licences for Uber there are a lot more "taxis" on the road than the city wants. A lot of people who use uber would have otherwise used actual taxis, which are regulated or other public transport services like the bus or subway. As a result you have far more cars on the road and that means a lot more traffic.

I was just thinking about this the other day how thrifting has been kinda ruined thanks to places like ebay. I mostly go for video games but goodwill has junk most of the time even my local small town thrift store I mostly see sports games and dance dance revolution and nothing else and I'm betting they caught on like goodwill. Plenty of thrift stores in the area are like this it's junk or ebay pricing only one store around here is pretty good and that's because I'm freinds with the owner and she is a sweetheart usually gives me good deals and let's me pick through games that aren't out on the shelf yet

More people started to do it and they were WAY less discreet than us. They would listen during lessons, not just during working times/study hall. Scratch was blocked bc of them

The trash near a trash can could be animals. In a Hamburg park I watched a bird from the crow family systematically empty a trash can in search of food discarded. Before the crow not a bit of litter in sight and after it looked like some shitty people were too lazy to put the trash in the bin and had littered everywhere.
@impishrebel5969 Жыл бұрын
On the flip side in Cardiff I saw a guy wholesale drop burger wrappers, half a burger, his half filled drink and some other garbage directly on the ground in the middle of a pile of trash thrown down by other people where the garbage can was only meters away, in a park, not far from the Senedd building. I was in shock someone just tossed garbage directly on a paved park path I couldn't even say anything. Where I'm from literring would net you a $6000 fine and that's not a joke, that's what the fines are. I'm convinced it's tourists from Europe doing the Appalachian trail mess. I used to enjoy hiking, but now in Europe I can't because all the trails are just filled to the brim of not just regular trash but dog doo so not only does it stink but there's no point in going out because it's so unpleasant.

Restoring old cars. Thanks to car youtubers hyping up old cars, specifically Japanese cars from the 80s and 90s, they are unattainable for people just looking to tinker around and learn how to work on cars. Not every Japanese car is a classic gem. Pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into any shit box will make it pretty good. That doesn't mean that beat up, neglected toyota corolla or 4runner is worth 25k.

Didnt watch the video but, punk rock. Back when it went mainstream lots of fake punk music started coming out. Still happens, poser bands like green day etc. Wanna hear real punk? Here are some bands : F-Minus, Oi Polloi, The Orphans, Blatz, Nausea, Minor Threat Want more singy stuff? Punks can sing too. Here is some folk punk bands: Days N Daze, Rail Yard Ghosts, Mischief Brew What makes punk music punk isnt the sound. Its the intention. If you intend to play at a punk show, or if its inspired by music from there and not about making money, played from your heart and soul its punk. Punk sound is limitless, its the intention of the sound which makes it punk or not. But when it became super popular in the 70s and 80s, lots of bands singing for money started. That shit doesn't even sound punk. It sounds commercialized. I wouldn't say punk is ruined, but there is still alot of fake shit out there.

Fidget toys. they were originally made for people with ADD and ADHD to help them focus, giving the fingers something to do while the brain went brrrr, they were usually inexpensive and easy to get since nobody really wanted them that much. then Fidget spinners and those popper toys became fads and now everyone, their mums, their dogs and their collection of stamps was trying to get ahold of them. which meant the good ones racked up in cost and a lot of shitty low quality knock offs rose up trying to grab some cash. and as someone with diagnosed ADHD. its fuckin shit. I was looking into getting a specific fiddle cube but now theres just fuckloads of them and I cant fucking find the one I was after.

Not just craft and street fairs, flea markets and Farmers markets are having the same problems. The local flea market near my childhood home used to be a great spot to visit to find all sorts of treasures, oddities and junk people pull out of their basements and attics. I went back last year to check it out again and saw several MLM booths, local politicians campaigning from stalls and even a couple sellers who were exclusively selling Trump 2024 merch. The same with Farmers markets my city has a great historic farmers market that's been there since the 1890's and when I was growing up, it was a great place to spend the afternoon and get good discounts on produce and other farm products that would cost more at the grocery store. These days however many of the farmers have been kicked out for expensive specialty goods and overpriced tourist knick knacks. At least this farmers market regulates what you can and can't sell so no MLM's.
