With the uni-uni knot, however many wraps you do with the leader, double the braid wraps. I've yet to breakoff at the knot when doing that. I've caught 20# plus drum on 10# braid/15# mono leaders with no wear or tear on the knot.
@FishingwithBrewski

I was already doing that. Usually 10 braid and 5 fluorocarbon wraps. I don't get many failures either but I switched to the PR knot for this kinda thing since then.

@@FishingwithBrewski I love the fg knot, but it's not an easy knot to tie on the water. Honestly tho, I can't remember having a uni-uni fail. Not on a fish anyway. If you get hung up, there's no knot that'll handle that. Lol

I lost a lot of sheeps too at first until I ease off the drag, just set the hook and let them run, more chance of keeping them on.
@FishingwithBrewski
@FishingwithBrewski 2 жыл бұрын
I actually think that run was a big black drum but I did recently manage to catch one around 50 pounds that I actually posted here and I do think it was because I played him light instead of trying to really crank hard on him so he didn't panic and head for structure.

Fg or uniknot. Tie the uni but then tie an over hand on both sides. I been fishing too much in the river. I need to come back out there to that spot soon. Always catch some huge fish around there.
@FishingwithBrewski

FG is a pain man. It wastes so much time tying it if I'm breaking off and I can rarely do it properly anyway. I use the uni to uni and since that happened I have doubled up the braid end and I haven't had a failure yet but we'll see how it goes.

@@cjhardy8970 anywhere on the ICW that has good growth on it will hold sheepshead. Look for old structure with 7ft of water or more and the bigger the structure is the better it is. I'm north of Wrightsville but I can promise you there is way better fishing elsewhere.

Just flip rocks down by the ICW on low tide. Base isn't the best for them though and it's seriously sweaty work flipping the big rocks. Swansboro has tons of them.

South Eastern is about as far as I am willing to say. Any structure near saltwater that has some decent current and oyster growth will have sheepshead though. They're literally everywhere.

What type of Kayak and Drive system do you use ??
@FishingwithBrewski
@FishingwithBrewski 3 жыл бұрын
I have a Native slayer 10. Their drive system is called the propel. Its only good for inshore and I'd actually recommend the old Town PDL if you're shopping around. A lot heavier boat but they're so tough it will last much longer. I've already got a hole in the nose of slayer and it doesn't track well even when brand new so its a pain in current.

@@vinniegibaldi7716 There are issues with the reverse drive on the Hobie. The propel drive design has never broken on me or anyone else I know but I've seen dozens of Hobie drive failures. The Hobie reverse drive has a lot of problems as well and doesn't provide instant reverse. With all that said, if you plan to do ocean and inshore then you'll want the Hobie outback as its the best all around. Just be prepared to replace the drive when the time comes.

Around Mangroves and around Docks and Bridge structure . Not directly in the channels . what are the specs on the St Croix?
@FishingwithBrewski
@FishingwithBrewski 2 жыл бұрын
Its 7ft med-lite power and fast action. I'd actually recommend medium power fast action over this since they're kinda floppy. Feel like I get better hookset with my med power rods but I got two of those st Croix rods for like 120$ as part of a sale so I figured I'd use them for structure fishing and don't have to get upset when they get all tore up.

Are those the evasive mud crabs 🦀 or natives nice video and serious barnacles on y’all’s area
@FishingwithBrewski
@FishingwithBrewski 3 жыл бұрын
The Asian shore crab is invasive and while they do look very similar they have stripes on their legs that make them easy to identify. Not sure if its just my area but I only find mud crabs and stone crabs really. The stone crabs are protected so I leave them alone and I make sure to put any mud crabs that are carrying eggs back. It can be tricky to see the difference between juvenile mud and stone crabs so make sure you learn. Big fiddlers work as well and you won't kill yourself trying to find them. 😄 I've got some back issues from flipping rocks already

i dont bother with the fg knot. try the gt knot instead. im gonna give you a tip for those big sheeps to get them away from the structure and its gonna sound crazy but it works nearly every time. after you get a solid hook set on the fish, loosen the drag up a lot. you want it to be just tight enough to keep enough tension to keep that hook in the fish. sheepshead will almost always plane out and swim outwards and upwards away from the structure when you do this. i have no idea why they do it but for some reason they do, i let them swim out into open water and then tighten up the drag and start fighting them. I've caught a lot of big sheeps this summer. I use super light tackle for these fish. I use a medium power rod and a 2500 size spinning reel with 10lb braid and a 15lb fluoro leader. I have yet to lose a sheep using that method, ive caught around ten sheepshead this summer that were close to or over 10lbs

So I immediately looked up the GT knot and I found this thing from salt strong talking about "the truth about the GT knot" and it ain't looking great. If you wanna show me what you're actually using that would be cool. Also, are you using bottom sweepers? I feel like if I don't have heavy drag I can't send the hook home and they freak out so quick that I don't think I can loosen the drag either. Also, there are 40# black drum in that same area and I don't think they play so nice with a 2500 haha. Still very interesting. Would love to see the method if you're recording.

Braided doesn't do good vs abrasive edges such as coral or rock so if he slips into that before you set the hook and pull him up he's getting away

Yea pretty much all my rods have multiple uses so they're all spooled with braid for the line capacity. I do use about 6ft of fluorocarbon joined to the braid with an FG knot now though. The issue here was braid cutting through the fluoro at the uni to uni knot.
