I bought a PRX powermatic 80 not too long ago as the first watch I’ve ever bought for myself. My dad has always worn a Tissot (previous generation PRX’s) my entire life so it made sense. Turns out, he actually owned a Tissot Seastar back in the 70’s which was the model that the newer PRX was based off of. When I found that out, I went and bought him a new PRX for Father’s Day. To me, that makes this watch mean that much more to me, having that connection to my dad.

My pick for the best under $1000 is between the seiko alpinist or the seiko gmt. Probably my favourite watch of all time is the SARB017 model of the alpinist even not regarding price point and the affordability of the seiko 5 gmt is unmatched but also is a flashy looker which looks way more expensive than it is especially with the jubilee bracelet. I've got both so I'm biased but as I said, those are my picks, I also have the bulova devil diver and mido ocean star which I believe both are very underrated.

Teddy Orient was originally marketed as a more affordable watch for LATIN AMERICA and AFRICA where battery distribution was difficult at first. That's why they only manufacture mechanical timepieces. At one point they briefly made MORE mechanical movement watches than now parent company Seiko. The Tri-Star series is legendary in Latin America.

16:06 for those who feel Sinn is no longer the value it once was, I would refer you to their “sister” brand Guinand, instead. They don’t do the more extreme tech that Sinn does, but from a sheer price-to-performance perspective, it really fills the void in the market that Sinn used to occupy. Being that Sinn himself used to own them, you’ll find a very similar design language coupled with monster specs. They also offer incredible customer service…being open to bespoke customization requests, along with top tier build quality. They’re especially good value for chronographs, often being several hundreds cheaper than comparable Sinns, with a better buying experience and basically equivalent quality.

Orient is not well known in the US. But it is well known everywhere else basically. I mean hell I am from Cuba, a small country with very little access to the international world, and must people in Cuba buy Orients, even going back 30 years. Off course also many people buy Seiko as well. But you ask any cuban person, anyone if they ever heard of Orient and the answer will be yes. Can't say for sure what is that make Orient watches so popular in Latin America and Caribbean, can't really say, but this brand is very, very popular down there

I have a ~5.5 inch wrist and prefer to wear and have collection of 39-42mm watches, Omega Planet Ocean 42mm 8500 being most worn (one ~34mm antiques one as well in collection); just wear what you like and buy what you can. Oh, and that Casio G-Shock - what size is that 50mm+ :) (though I don't wear it, just have it). As per servicing, and as an example, Omega service costs USD600-800 (includes replacements) but then if you know who is ace and no replacements are required, go trusted cheaper service; of course if you have 25k-50K+ watches, better go 100% authorised.

I have a Tissot T-Touch and as of June 14th, it is 15 years old. The rotating bezel broke years ago and it is on its fourth battery. But overall, the watch is still in good shape and works grate. However, the watch smith that put the last battery in said there was a lot of corrosion inside and was wondering how the watch was still working. My family and I have been going to the Outer Banks in NC for vacation the last 10 years. Maybe the saltwater hurt it a little bit. maybe. I want a new Swiss watch, that will last like my current Tissot, but I do not want to send over $550. I really like several brands that you have illustrated, Tissot is # 1, Ball, Hamilton, Sinn, and many others that I have forgotten already.. What can you Recommend? Thanks - Grate Job by the way.

If we're being technical and not basing off of popularity I believe that the mido ocean star would be the best watch under $1000. It's light, thin, has a nice design, has a sapphire crystal with double AR coating, has an 80 hr power reserve with a strong reputation for being very accurate, 200m water resistance, great bracelets with ON THE FLY micro adjust, good lume and even a day date display. I love my ocean star in titanium, but the regular model at $1k just can't be beaten on a technical level especially in the swiss watchmaking scene.

A lot of good topics were covered in this video. I feel I can speak a bit on the BB54 as I have tried it on and have a 7.25" wrist. I am on the taller side and I don't know this person's height, but proportionally it did not look correct on me. If the AD has a full length mirror, look in that. The sales person was seeing that same view and either way potentially sells a similar priced watch, so they weren't likely trying to lead him astray. Although the BB54 does wear bigger than 37 sounds on paper, it's still small. I personally think a BB58 is going to be better for that size wrist when thinking of a compact/vintage sized diver. For me personally, the Pelagos 39 is an even better wearing experience with its slightly larger bezel and lug width. Having tried on vintage Submariners, the wearing experience is pretty much the same with the P39. I will wear 38mm field watches, but a 38-39mm watch looks the same on my wrist as what a 36mm watch looks like on smaller wrists. Don't fall into the trap of thinking a very small watch is what you should be wearing even if it's the talk of the watch community or hyped right now. I don't go into a store and buy a medium sized t-shirt because it's the popular size. I buy what fits me. I bet that guy could get a lightly pre-owned BB58 for a good price at this point and save some money. Teddy, thanks for addressing the Seiko price thing. You really summed it up well. So many people don't seem to get that those prices back in the day were artificial so to speak and not meant to be that low. That being said, I do think some of Seiko's Prospex price increases well into 4 figures are a bit much for what they're offering with the movements/accuracy. That doesn't mean I don't want one though.
